Malawi Literacy Programme

As we are about to start a newLionistic year, headed by new

teams in every Club, I thought it wouldbe interesting to find out from Lionmembers their views on Lionism ingeneral through the Pride of Lions.

At Lions’ events like the Zonemeetings and Charter Evenings, thetalk invariably turns to the difficultiesin arranging fund raising events, andparticularly, recruiting or evenretaining members. Membership is anissue at many Clubs. In the last fewyears, the District Governors and themembership teams have made hugeefforts to address the situation. TheIncoming DG Lion Meena Gupta isequally focussed on this.

I would like to start a section in thePride of Lions, which every monthwould air the concerns, and views ofthe Lion membership about “What doLions want?” What is missing? Whatwould rekindle the enthusiasm andwhat would help the MembershipTeam and the incoming leaders ofDistrict 105A.

The Help 2 Read project has entered into Memorandum of Understandingwith School Aid programme, a registered charity in UK. The charity has been

established since 1998.School Aid improves the quality of education in Africa by redistributing

teaching and learning materials to African schools in disadvantagedcommunities’ such as Malawi, with the assistance of local volunteers andpartners on the ground.

This new literacy initiative by Lions in partnerships with Help 2 Read /SchoolAid will benefit much larger groups of students.

Clubs are requested to support the School Aid programme: £20 could fill a primary classroom shelf full of books£50 could supply textbooks for a whole school class£150 could train up a new library assistant.

This initiative supersedes earlier Malawi Education programme, that wasterminated due absence of communication and transparency.
