Primary 1 Home Learning Week Beginning 1 st June 2020 Welcome back P1! We can’t believe that it’s June already - how time flies! We hope you had a lovely weekend. We really enjoyed taking part in Gilmerton’s ‘Virtual Sports Day’ on Friday! We particularly loved the ‘Ultimate Challenge’. It took us a long time to spot all the staff! Did you find everyone? We hope by now that you have all had a visit from the postie and have received a letter from your teacher. We really loved writing them to you and hope that you enjoyed reading them! This week we have received some fantastic pictures of Simba from our Lion King project, seen some fantastic masks being made, witnessed potion making using phonics and had some lovely replies written to our letters. Thank you very much! They really do make our day! Good luck for this week! Miss Fleetwood, Miss Maxwell & Miss Webster P.S Top Tip! Welcome back P1! 😊

We can’t believe that it’s June already - how time flies! We hope you

had a lovely weekend. We really enjoyed taking part in Gilmerton’s

‘Virtual Sports Day’ on Friday! We particularly loved the ‘Ultimate

Challenge’. It took us a long time to spot all the staff! Did you find

everyone? We hope by now that you have all had a visit from the

postie and have received a letter from your teacher. We really loved

writing them to you and hope that you enjoyed reading them!

This week we have received some fantastic pictures of Simba from

our Lion King project, seen some fantastic masks being made,

witnessed potion making using phonics and had some lovely replies

written to our letters. Thank you very much! They really do make our

day!

Good luck for this week!

Miss Fleetwood, Miss Maxwell & Miss Webster 😊

Word Building Below are ten different words for you to spell this week. They are

differentiated into mild, spicy and hot words. Try one or two mild words first

and if they are too easy for you, move on to try some spicy or hot words!

Remember to use your Fred Fingers to identify all the sounds!

This week you could try:

Fairy Messages Find things in your

garden to build your

words with (e.g

sticks/leaves/seeds)

Leave them for the

fairies to find!

Hopscotch! Use chalk to draw a

hopscotch with

different sounds in each

box. Jump to the right

boxes to spell each

word!

Sensory Spelling Put a small amount of

glitter/sand/rice in a

shallow container (a cake

tin works well!). Write

each sound using your

Handwriting Practise writing ay, ee, igh, ow, oo in cursive handwriting. We have added

some handwriting sheets on the Primary 1 page if you would like to have a go.

Top Tip! You could teach someone in your house how to use magic fingers for

writing in the air or on someone’s back!

Writing

Choose one activity from the P1 Big Writing PowerPoint on the school website.

There are 10 lovely ideas for you to choose from! Why not try writing a letter

to your favourite teddy bear?

We would love to see which one you choose so please take a photo to send to us

if you can!

Top Tip! Use a lolly pop stick to help you to remember finger spaces if you are

finding them tricky!

Reading

** To be taken to your child’s allocated reading book please log in to Oxford

Owl before clicking the link under your child’s reading group.Thank you! **

Everyone should have received an email from our school admin telling you what

reading group your child is in. Please click on the link under your child’s group to

be taken to their reading book for this week.

Top Tips:

1. Let your child listen to the story first. You can use the audio feature or read

the story to them.

2. Before they read the story, talk to your child about the pictures on each

page.

3. The first page of your child’s reading book has tips about what to do/ask

before, during and after reading. It also highlights words that you may need

to help your child to read.

4. Questions should be completed orally – we do not expect children in P1 to

write down their answers!

Red Words Practice

Red words are words that we can’t sound out using phonics. Your child knows

that these are words that we need to recognise, or they will trick us when we

are spelling or reading!

This week we would like you to learn and practice a new red word!

said

Click the link below to give it a go! 😊

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=03kliU9t6eA

There are lots of ways you can practise red words at home. Here are some

ideas;

• Ask your child to use each word in a spoken sentence, e.g. I like going to

the park, Chocolate is my favourite treat!

• Build each word out of playdough/sticks/lego/pasta or whatever you have

handy!

• Use pens, paint, chalk or water to practice writing them. Children especially

love going outside to write them as BIG as they can!

• Go on a red word scavenger hunt – write out lots of these red words and

hide them in your house/garden. Once found, can your child read them to

earn a bonus point?

Numeracy!

Every week: 1. Log in to your SumDog account and complete the new challenges that we have

set for you in numeracy/maths.

2. Choose an activity from the SEAL grids on the school websites. These

activities do not require any technology!

Below are some maths and numeracy activities for your child to complete. You

can try to work your way through them all, or just focus on the SEAL Chapter

that your child is working within.

MILD Activities (SEAL Chapter 5)

1. Write the numbers before and the numbers after:

3

5

8

6

2

7

4

2. Click the link below to practice your counting skills! Choose from counting,

matching or ordering and select the numbers to want to work with.

SPICY Activities (SEAL Chapter 6)

1. Count on to continue the sequence:

6 16

8 18

13 23

10 20

2. Gather a collection of counters or Lego and use them to answer these

questions. How many do you have altogether?

• 5 groups of 2 bears?

• 10 groups of 2 bears?

• 3 groups of 2 bears?

• 4 groups of 2 bears?

• 6 groups of 2 bears?

• 8 groups of 2 bears?

• 7 groups of 2 bears?

3. Practice reading a graph for information! Use the diagram on the next

page to answer these questions:

• How many cats?

• How many bears?

• What is the total of snakes and horses?

• How many more cats than snakes?

• Which animal has the highest number?

• Which animal has the lowest number?

Hot Activities (SEAL Chapter 7)

1. Find the missing number. You might want to use a 100 square to help you

(You will find one on the next page, along with one or two extra activities):

• 18 + ___ = 20 27 + ___ = 32

• 38 + ___ = 43 49 + ___ = 51

• 66 + ___ = 52 36 + ___ = 41

• 28 + ___ = 33 45 + ___ = 50

• 58 + ___ = 64 67 + ___ = 71

2. Draw a picture or a diagram to show how you put these into equal groups:

• I have 16 eggs to put in baskets. If I put 2 eggs in each basket, how

many baskets will I need?

• There are 15 pieces of pepperoni. How many pizzas will I need if

they each take 3 pieces of pepperoni?

• 20 people want to go in cars to the seaside. If each car holds 4

people, how many cars will they take?

• Sam is putting 24 books onto bookshelves. If each bookshelf holds 6

books, how many shelves will he need?

• I have 21 smarties to put on cupcakes. If I put 3 smarties on each

cupcake, how many cupcakes can I decorate?

3. Click on the ‘Let’s Compare!’ link below to play a comparison game. It will

help you learn and practice different comparison words, like shortest and

longest.

Let's Compare!

100 Square Activity Ideas

Jigsaw: Cut up into pieces to make a jigsaw for the children to reassemble.

Increase the number of pieces to make it harder. Cut along the lines, not

through the numbers.

Cover-up: Child 1 covers up one or more squares using counters. Child 2 has to

guess which numbers are hidden under the counters.

Health and Wellbeing – Building Resilience Unit 12 Expect the Unexpected!

We are continuing with our ‘Expect the Unexpected’ programme, and we hope

you are finding it helpful.

Stories and picture books are a fantastic way to talk to your child about tricky

topics. This week we are learning that it is okay not to be okay.

Click the link below to listen to a story called ‘How Do You Feel? By Anthony

Browne.

How Do You Feel?

Everything Changes

Encourage your child to think about things that change in nature.

They may want to think about the changing seasons or the changes we

see in nature, e.g. tadpoles changing into frogs. You could even talk

about how people change as they grow and get older. You can talk

about these or draw a picture.

Page 15: Primary 1 Home Learning - WordPress.com · 2020. 5. 31. · Primary 1 Home Learning Week Beginning 1st June 2020 Welcome back P1! 😊 We can’t believe that it’s June already

Session 6 – Language

Watch:

Click on the link below to watch a video introducing session 6 of

The Lion King Experience

Explore: • Write a birthday card for Simba from two different characters in the

Lion King: Pumbaa and Scar. How will their messages differ?

• Can you write it so that Simba will know exactly who sent the card, even if

it wasn’t signed? What picture might be on the front of each card?

• Once you’ve written the cards, can you read them out loud in each

character’s voice?

CREATE:

Now, step into role as a writer and draw a scene for the character of your

choice: Pumbaa or Scar.

• If you picked Pumbaa: draw a scene about the day Timon and Pumbaa first

met.

• If you picked Scar: draw a scene about Mufasa and Scar when they were

cubs.

1. Before you start drawing, consider what details you want to include

in your picture.

2. Think about other characters that might be in your scene.

Share: We would love to see photos of you taking part in this project! Don’t forget

that you can upload photos to our school twitter feed or email them to our

school admin!
