IF YOU have the time totravel America it’s likelyFlorida, New York andLas Vegas are top of yourlist of places to visit – butwhat about the VolunteerState of Tennessee forsome Americanadventure.
Stretched between the majestic
Great Smokey Mountains in the east
and the mighty Mississippi River on
the west, visitors to Tennessee can
enjoy a timeless slice of the American
South in one trip.
If you fancy a bit of the Old West,
without the desert sand, indulge in a
little rail nostalgia at a score of sites
that are both historic and entertaining.
Even the most avid railroad buff
never lacks for attractions to whet his,
or her, whistle in Tennessee.
Many old rail depots have been
restored as rail museums featuring
steam locomotives or vintage rolling
stock. Others offer rail excursions.
At Newbern’s RR Museum, the
Rev George Butler, a Presbyterian
minister, proudly leads weekend tours
through the town depot.
Ask, and Butler will also tell you
about Elvis Presley’s 90-day stay in
Newbern while the rock ’n’ roll king
worked in the construction industry
before he became famous.
You can actually visit the
Chattanooga Choo-Choo, a restored
railroad station, and in Knoxville climb
aboard the “Three Rivers Rambler” at
Volunteer Landing for an exhilarating,
80-minute trek behind a chugging 2-
8-0 to the French Broad, where the
Holston and Tennessee Rivers meet.
Everyone knows Memphis’s best-
known resident, and hundreds of
thousands of music fans visit each
year to soak up the sights and sounds
of the home of the blues and
birthplace of rock ’n’ roll with a walk
down Beale Street.
Elvis’s Graceland is a must-see for
any visitor, but you should also drop in
at any local club to hear what today’s
musicians are playing, whether it be
funk, rock, soul or the blues.
After Graceland, the most well-
known attraction is, of course,
Dollywood, which can be found at
the foot of the Great Smokey
Mountains National Park at
Knoxsville.
Dolly Parton opened Tennessee’s
only theme park in 1986, and it’s been
a huge success ever since.
The climate in Tennessee is sub
tropical, with winter temperatures
averaging 5C and 24C in summer.
Tennessee really is terrific, but the
trouble is one visit is not long enough
to take in such a huge slice of
America.
For details visitwww.tennesseetourist.com.

IF YOU want to look fab and not drab at 50 check out ‘Next’ for somegreat spring/summer styles that can be worn by women of all ages.
Next’s Riviera Style collection has someparticularly flattering pieces for the olderlady including wide leg linen trousers andlittle cotton sweaters for the daytime aswell as stunning patterned wrap-dresses forthe evening.
Colours in the collection range fromsimple black and white to neutral shades ofcreams and greys, through to more eye-catching designs which include touches ofgreens and blues.
The pieces are both sophisticated andstylish.
IF you have recently retiredand are looking forsomething to fill your timeduring the summer, why nottransform your garden.
Even a small plot can be rewarding and
can prove more manageable.
So whether you have a balcony or a
handkerchief size backyard, the important
thing to remember is as long as your patch
gets some daylight, you can find plants
that will grow and give you pleasure all
year round.
First of all decide what you want from
your garden, do you want to grow food or
flowers that are a simply a joy to look at?
You might have room for a single fruit
tree, a small vegetable area, or at the very
least a few fresh herbs on a windowsill
which you can use in the kitchen.
Natural soil helps but is not essential.
Pots filled with potting compost can be
just as good.
An interesting variety of plants can be
grown in pots, even shrubs and trees.
Trees can add height, helping to make a
small garden look bigger. This is an
important aim and clever designs can
create the impression of more space than
there really is.
If you only have a balcony to work in,
try to produce a tiered effect.
Make sure there are taller plants at the
back, and pots graduated in size to the
smallest at the front, making sure the
plants you grow in them correspond in
size.
Talk to your garden centre about how
big individual plants will grow if you are
not sure.
If you have a tiny plot outside you can
use screens, fences and archways to give
the illusion of different areas in the
garden.
The smaller the garden, the more
careful you have to be with your plant
selection.
Small trees and clipped or shapely
shrubs give a good structure, plenty of in-
fill plants give a base to the garden and a
small selection of specimen plants can give
you a dramatic display at different times of
the year.

A major reason for age-related weight
gain is that the rate at which you burn
calories in food and drink, known as your
metabolic rate, slows down with age.
The extra calories will turn into surplus
body fat over time if you don’t adjust
your diet or exercise more.
To avoid putting on weight as you age
you may have to reduce your calorie
intake slightly by sticking to a balanced
diet and also ensure you take regular
exercise. It’s not a good idea to follow fad
diets as it can make it even harder to
manage your weight over the long term.
In order to get the best from your diet
do the following:
• Eat at least five portions of fruit and
vegetables a day.
• Base meals on starchy foods such as
bread, potatoes, rice or pasta.
• Drink plenty of water and cut out fizzy,
sugary drinks - watch out for hidden
sugars added to many soft
drinks.
• Limit your consumption
of food and drinks that
are high in sugar, or in
saturated fats like butter.
• Choose lower fat meat,
poultry and dairy foods.
• Eat more fish – aim for
two portions a week,
including one portion of
oily fish such as salmon,
fresh tuna, mackerel,
sardines or trout.
• Drink less alcohol.
• Limit your salt intake to
a maximum of 6g a day –
try not to add it to your
food and beware of
added salt in processed
foods and ready-made
meals.
• Try not to skip meals,
particularly breakfast.
• Eat a variety of foods to
ensure you’re getting all
the nutrients your body
needs.

BEING house-proud is more importantthan continuing with hobbies or beingintimate with a partner, according tonew research.
The study by joint care supplement Osteo Bi-
Flex found it is the little things in life we would miss
if joint health became a concern.
Being unable or struggling to complete household
chores (53 per cent) scored higher than being able to
continue with hobbies (46 per cent), being intimate
with a partner (31 per cent) or walking short
distances (51 per cent) when it came to thinking
about future mobility. However, being unable to
dress oneself (50 per cent) or carry/open items (51
per cent) were also seen as concerns.
Being forced to rely on others is the largest issue
(73 per cent) for those questioned when considering
what losing mobility would actually mean to them.
Losing mobility is synonymous with being dependent
and is scored almost twice as likely as feeling that it
means being unable to continue with hobbies (46 per
cent) or being confined to a home (43 per cent).
Joslyn Thompson, founder of ONE Personal
Training, said: “Our bodies are built for movement,
and today’s sedentary lifestyle and lack of postural
awareness has lead to increasing risk of poor joint
mobility and discomfort. Sitting down hunched over
a desk in front of a computer for eight hours or more
a day is bad news for joints.
“Similarly, walking or bending with poor posture
will put undue stress on the joints leading to
discomfort. Poor joint mobility can be helped by
increasing your weekly physical activity and
following expert advice if necessary. Daily awareness
of your posture including: walking and sitting tall;
bending from the knees when picking things up; and
even weight distribution when carrying bags can
assure good joint mobility and strength for years to
come.”
According to nutritionist Fiona Hunter: “Many of
us take the health of our bones and joints for
granted, but as we get older our joints can become
worn so it’s important to do whatever we can to
keep them healthy.
“Staying active as you get older is an important
part of staying healthy and helps to keep your heart,
joints and other organs in good condition.”
Keep mobile, keep fit – Clean up!
Five-a-day helpswork, rest and playINTRODUCING healthier foods into your diet as you agecan help improve your quality of life and avoid diseasesassociated with ageing.
