Each year around this time we begin to turn our attention to “the holidays,” a grand phrase which means different things to different people. However, there is general agreement among most cultures that incorporated into the meaning of the phrase is the idea of gift giving - that we should give from the heart to those whom we love, rely on, or are indebted. This year’s gift guide is filled with little treasures from around the world. Some are playful; some are serious; but all are meaningful. They each have a story to tell about where they’ve been and what they mean, and why they might be selected as a gift. Regardless of their story, however, they all say I can be given from the heart.

We had a collection of vintage obis, the beautiful silk belts that wrap around kimonos. Unfortunately, in our culture people don’t really wear kimonos. Legend has it that Shiva, charged with protecting all of earth’s crea-tures, became overwhelmed by his responsibility. So he asked his trusty mount, Nandi, for help. Nandi’s solution to the magnitude of the task was to offer to take care of his own - all of earth’s four-legged creatures. Shiva was grateful and Nandi became the “protector” of any creature with four legs.

In medieval times, Indian women wore fabulous jewelry which began at the part of their hair and fell to the bottom of their forehead covering their “third eye.” Today, such elaborate headgear has been replaced with a simple smudge of red powder called tikka, which traditionally is kept in a small wooden box.
