PRINCETOWN CREDIT UNION
The Princetown Credit Union is part of the county wide Plough & Share Credit Union Ltd. It is a non-profit making organisation, authorised and regulated by the Financial Services Authority. The Credit Union was set up and is run by volunteers within the local community.
The Credit Union exists to serve its members. The main aims being to encourage members to save regularly, and to provide loans at a reasonable rate of interest, enabling members to manage their finances more easily.
Joining: Joining is easy, all you have to do is fill in a membership application form, provide two proofs of identification and £2 membership fee. You are then given a membership number and a passbook.
Saving: Save as little as £1.00 per week. Children can save too. Members can rest in the assurance that their savings are secure, with many levels of security in place as well as internal and external audits. Simply deposit cash or cheques at the Princetown Service Point or set up a standing order.
Borrowing: Loans can be arranged to relieve the pressure of an unexpected big bill. Borrow up to twice your savings from the pool after 13 weeks of regular saving. Interest rates are very low – between 1.5% to 2% per month. Example – A loan of £500, paid back weekly at £10.84 over one year would only cost £63.32 in interest. (No loan is too small.)
Free Life Insurance is provided by the Credit Union on all savings and loans. The amount payable is in proportion to the amount of savings the member has, and benefits are payable only on the death of the member. Usually the beneficiary gets twice what the member had saved.
Find Us: The Princetown Service Point is located in the Community Centre. Wednesday 11.00am - 1.00pm. Come along to find out more, you don’t need an appointment, just turn up.

The High Moorland Women’s Institute The High Moorland Women’s Institute, which is a small cog in the big wheel of the Devon Federation of Women’s Institutes, was formed by a group of women who could see a need for such a group in Princetown, back in 1997. To date our number of members stands at 27 and is growing. Let me tell you a little of what we do, then you can judge for yourself if the HMWI is for you. Our meetings start each year in February (too risky in January due to weather). We generally have an interesting speaker coupled with an activity relating to the talk, for example we have had aromatherapy, weaving, bauble making, trying on hats with Mrs B’s Bonnets, an hilarious talk from The Farmer’s Wife of Postbridge and a Pilates taster session, to name but a few of the activities we get up to. We have trips further afield to places of interest, including theatre trips, but always the highlight of each year is a visit to Postbridge Panto where a good laugh is always guaranteed. But the year would not be complete for us without the seniors Christmas party held at the Plume of Feathers each December. We have two trips per year where families are invited to come along. When you read this article we will have been on our trip to Morwellham Quay. You may have seen us, or even been with us when we do our Comic Relief and Sport Relief processions throughout the village, or indeed camping out in the snow for Shelterbox, all good fun but at the same time helping a good cause. You may have two taster sessions for £1 each before you make your mind up. Come and join us on the first Wednesday of each month in church hall Tor Royal Lane. 7.30pm. Earlier this year our wonderful, hard working President of 8 years, Wendy Stones stood down from her role. She was our inspiration from 2003-2011. A small party was held in her honour and she was presented with a hand painted milk churn as a mark of our gratitude and thanks for all she has done for HMWI. If you are in possession of a State pension and would like to join in the seniors party in the Plume of Feathers on 10th December, please leave your name and contact details at the Post Office and we will be in touch. It only remains for me to say thank you for reading this first article by HMWI. If you would like to know more, please feel free to contact Sue on 01822 880395 or just come along.

Bird movements. By Paul Stubbs
For most species of bird, you can’t tell one individual from another. However, if a bird is ringed, you can. Each ring has a unique number on it, so a Robin ringed in my garden will be the only bird in the world, with that numbered ring on its leg. So we’re able to find out what individuals do, such as their movements and here are a few from my meagre efforts: Blackbird: other than local short movements to Tavistock Road (taken by a cat), Two Bridges Road and the Fox Tor café (drowned in water butt!) there’s this: ringed 28/10/05 at 7 Plymouth Hill, found dead 21/05/06 in NE France 335kms away 205 days later. Siskin: none found locally, except across the road and next door, but others found in Buckfastleigh, Bridford and several in Stover Country Park! One youngster, less than 1 month out of the nest, was ringed on 9/6/10 and found at Stover 30 days later! Another was ringed near Minehead on 23/9/08 and found dead in the garden of Mike & Jan Daniels in 1 Babbs Cottage, 621 days later, having travelled 82 kms! Greenfinch: one found dead at 1 New London Cottages, one ringed 3/10/07, caught by ringer at Challacombe 24/2/08, 144 days/12.4 kms, one ringed on 12/11/07, found in Emmetts Park, Ashburton (taken by a cat) 326 days/17 kms, one ringed in Venton, Cornwood on 3/7/07 and caught by me on 26/10/07, 115 days/17 kms, one ringed in the nest at Venford Reservoir on 28/4/10, caught by me on 27/9/10, 152 days/ 9 kms. Starling: one found by Martin Runge at 9 Blackabrook Avenue having hit a window, one ringed 10/11/10 found caught in garden netting in Yelverton 19/1/11, 70 days/10 kms, one ringed 17/2/06 caught by ringer in Kingsteignton 15/1/07, 332 days/26 kms. Chaffinch: one ringed 31/12/05, found by Valerie Andrews at Jollymead, Hexworthy (brought in by cat), 2/9/08, 976 days/6 kms. Blue Tit: ringed 22/9/05, taken by cat in Whitchurch Road, Tavistock, 7/3/10, 1627 days/11 kms. Wheatear: spotted with colour rings on legs, up Ivybridge Lane, on 27/9/10 and 2/10/10, ringed in the nest 9/6/10 on Fair Isle, Shetland, 115 days/1012 kms!
If you find a bird, do have a quick look to see if it has rings on its legs. If it does, contact me on 890520 or [email protected] or bring it to me at 7 Plymouth Hill. We’ll be able to find out its history.

News from Princetown Community School By Ali Hirst We had a super end to the summer term with lots of memorable experiences to enrich the children’s learning. The Spanish Day on the 13th July was a huge success. It was terrific to see the children (...and staff) really dressed for the occasion. I think we all thoroughly enjoyed the flamenco dance workshops with Karina and Joel. Later in the day when the Spanish café was open the children (...and staff) had the chance to perform the Flamenco dances they had learnt to parents and friends. The leaver’s assembly was very moving and the year 6 children entertained us with their thoughts on school and memories of their time here at Princetown. It is a sad time of year as we have to say good bye to them, but also a very rewarding one...a time to share in their achievements and celebrate their personal successes. We wish Brandon, Jack, Megan, Rebbecca, Ezra, Phoebe, Travis (Jemma and George who left just before the end of term) all the very best and we will be thinking of them in September as they take the next step in life’s journey. Good luck to you all. I’m sure you have all seen our new mural in the school playground. We are so pleased with it and would like to thank Lisa Rowe who helped the Children United (school council) to design it and organised the painting of it. The children were very involved in the project and organised a number of fund raising events to pay for it. Such as discos, car washes, quizzes and fun competitions to do in the holidays.
As always we are looking forward to seeing everyone again at the start of the school year and would like to take this opportunity to welcome the 15 children who will be starting school for the first time in September. We will have 3 classes next year: Tawny Owls – foundation and Year 1 Kestrels – Year 2 and Year 3 Buzzards – Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6
Just a note to remind you... The children start school on Monday 5th September. The school day starts at 8.55am and will finish at the new time of 3.15pm.

Princetown Scout Group News.
As I mentioned in the previous edition, the scout group have a busy summer program this year and the weekend of the 11th and 12th June saw our visit to Foxcove campsite near Plymouth. Set in woodland alongside the Yealm estuary in South Devon, this location has been a favourite with scouts for many years and we were lucky enough to be able to visit again this year. We took a mixed group of Scouts, Cubs and the young Beavers who all won badges and awards for a variety of activities and challenges. Everyone is expected to help with pitching tents and organising their own equipment and our group were soon set up and ready to go for what turned out to be an eventful weekend. Those scouts who were working towards their camp cook badge treated us to some excellent food whilst others had been responsible for planning the menu and shopping for supplies - keeping strictly to budget. Taking on these responsibilities is an important part of scouting and our members did a fantastic job and as always worked together learning important team skills. We had a fantastic day on Saturday when we had a visit from Steve Avenall who is an instructor in Forestry and Woodland Management. As well as identifying various species of trees, the group learned about pruning and care of trees and the threats to the environment that need to be managed. Our scouts now know their Ash from their Oak as well as how to protect young trees from damage by deer. We thank Steve for his input and this is an example of how volunteers can contribute to our group and make a real difference. Meanwhile our young beaver scouts were negotiating their adventure trail in the woods which included a ‘blind trail’ and tracking work. Later, one of our assistant leaders, “Badger” led the whole group in collecting and cooking nettles to make a surprisingly delicious nettle soup. As always the day finished with songs and stories around a roaring camp fire before tired youngsters climbed into their sleeping bags. Unfortunately Sunday morning arrived with very heavy rain with many of the group finding tents flooded and equipment soaked. Despite the conditions our stoical Princetown scouts worked hard in the rain to pack our things and prepare for heading home. We don’t let a rain storm spoil our weekend and our members should be congratulated on how well they managed in difficult conditions, with surprisingly few grumbles! Well done to everybody and remember if any young people between 6 and 14 years fancy a bit of adventure and fun then why not join us by simply calling me on 01822 890690. ‘I have worked in a bar full time for over a year and have only been allowed to take five days off so far. When I asked my boss if I could take two weeks holiday later in the year he refused, telling me I was only entitled to five days off a year. I’m sure this can’t be right, but I’m worried about losing my job if I kick up a fuss. Is there anything I can do?’ Like most full-time workers, you are entitled to at least 28 days' paid holiday a year (5.6 weeks) including public holidays. This is a legal right. Your contract of employment may give you the right to take more than the statutory amount of paid holiday, but it cannot give you less. To help you work out your exact entitlement, you can use the calculator on the Business Link website at www.businesslink.gov.uk You don’t have an automatic right to take bank or public holidays off work, with or without pay. but your employment contract may give you bank or public holidays off on top of your statutory holiday. If this is the case, your contract should specify this and also say whether you will be paid for these days. If your employer refuses to let you take holiday, or refuses to let you take holiday at a particular time, try to sort it out informally with them first. If this doesn't work, get advice as soon as possible from your trade union if you belong to one, or from an experienced CAB adviser. You may be able to take your case to an employment tribunal, but there are pros and cons to think about if you are considering this course of action.

Holidaying securely “Please don’t let your summer holiday be ruined by having your possessions stolen” say Local Beat Manager Dave Pickles and PCSO Mark Canvin. They urge people not to leave things of value in their vehicles as it provides a prime opportunity for opportunist thieves. “You wouldn’t dream of leaving valuable items on show in your vehicle at home, so please be careful not to leave them on show whilst on holiday” he urges. “And please be careful not to leave windows open when you are away, despite the heat”. We have also had great success in making sure that people in our area are aware of this risk, and as a result, people are taking good care of their property and so the thieves are staying away because the pickings here are too thin.

"Children are proud to share their achievements and receive constant praise, which boosts their positive self esteem."(Ofsted 2009) YOU CAN’T SAY THAT! By Paddy McGinty During the recent royal wedding, millions around the world saw that Prince William chose to wear a uniform that included the famous British "red coat." Many people have asked, "Why did the British wear red coats in battle?" A long time ago, Britain and France were at war. During one battle, the French captured a British Colonel. They took him to their headquarters and the French General questioned him. Finally, as an afterthought, the French General asked, "Why do British officers all wear red coats? Don't you know that the red material makes you easier targets for us to shoot at?" In his casual, matter-of-fact way, the officer informed the General that the reason British officers wear red coats is so that if they are shot, the blood won't show, and the men they are leading won't panic. And that is why, from that day forward, all French Army officers wear brown trousers….

Princetown Play Area The new play equipment is proving to be a great hit with the children and young people. Phase 2 of the project is to replace the swings and to provide a toddler area. We need £12,500 for this and, to date, we have acquired grants totalling £6,000. Funding is difficult in the present climate, so please let the Clerk know if you hear of any potential sources of grants.
The flat swing seats were well past their best, so the Council has purchased two new ones to tide us over until we have the money for phase 2
Parish Plan Parish Plans are produced by the community and for the community. They contain a description of the issues in the Parish and describe the outcomes that the community wants to see, as well as the priorities and the groups that will need to be involved to make the required changes happen. A Parish Plan provides a means by which we can influence local government and even national government. It also puts us in a much stronger position to attract funders for projects.
At the moment, we do not have a Parish Plan and we have already lost funding for the play area as a result, so it is very important that we put this right as soon as possible.
We need to identify the real issues that will form the main part of the Parish Plan. This will be done by consulting residents in the Parish and asking for their views on the issues that need to be addressed. We will shortly be holding a public meeting to ask for volunteers to form a working group of residents that will drive the consultation. Your Parish needs you, so please come to the meeting when it is advertised
Emergency Plan The Parish Council has been working for some time on a self-help plan to ensure the safety of its residents in the event of a repeat of the bad weather experienced during the last two winters. One of the features of the Emergency Plan is dealing with local problems due to heavy snowfall, especially when parts of the Parish are cut off. We are currently investigating our options for purchasing and storing salt, but we will also need volunteers to come out and help to clear snow. We have clarified with Devon County Council the health and safety situation if we do local snow clearing, and we are satisfied that we can manage this without liability problems. If you feel you would be able to help with snow clearance, please do watch out for the notices asking for volunteers

Princetown Community Centre by Graham Chubb The community centre group has recently achieved charity status and will shortly begin the process of formally becoming responsible for the Community Centre. Now is the time for the community to support the retention of the centre as a community controlled asset by volunteering to any of the committee (names of key members are on the centre door). More volunteers are critical if the initiative to retain the centre is to be successful.

Gardening with the Woodman: The Lawn. By Nick Thurlow
Having a passion for gardens can and will last you a lifetime, mine started at an early age. I was encouraged by my father to take an interest and by my tender teenage years of 13 I had already repaired the Devon hedge in my parent’s garden to an acceptable standard. At this time I even learnt how a stone looked right in a wall, and the biggest tip of all: don’t pick up a stone twice! So that’s me - really passionate about gardens and a great champion of the British look much admired around the world, and an ardent follower of the old school techniques, particularly Victorian. I do not profess to have a great garden, but my garden reflects how I am and what you can do with your imagination and the use of salvaged materials and architectural junk that I come across in my line of work. In this issue and forthcoming issues I will give tips on how to start enjoying your gardens, making the process easy and turning a burden into an asset - hopefully, after all I am not Monty, or Mr Titchmarsh. So, as it is Autumn, let me give you a few tips on how that old enemy and most neglected plant in the garden, the Lawn, can survive the Princetown eco. system! Your lawn is a centre point in your garden, you might have excellent borders full of colour and interest, but a poorly maintained lawn will always take your eye away and stare back at you with all its faults! I don’t have a first rate lawn myself. In fact, it borders on a third rate lawn sometimes and it frustrates me immensely, especially when I have done what I can and put in a lot of hard graft. Sometimes it looks ok though and I love the feel of this natural carpet! Princetown basically has poor soil, trying to improve soil quality helps and importation of good quality topsoil would improve your chances if you were starting from scratch. However, the majority are stuck with what we have got so here is the programme. September: Increase your mowing interval (assuming you were cutting once a week!), raise your cut heights. Worms leave a lot of casts around now so brush these away and start applying an autumn lawn fertilizer if your lawn’s gone a bit pale and thin as mine has. Any repairs can be carried out to bumps, hollows bare patches etc. Scarifying is a must now, and spiking to aerate and deal with compacted areas. Deal with disease (but that’s a whole new chapter!). Pests, especially good old Mr and Mrs Mole can be moved on this month! (I need to write a book really on this one). You can be busy in September, as it’s also the best time to seed a new lawn.

October: Raise your mowing cut heights for you last couple of cuts as the mowing routine finishes now. Trim up your edges for the winter; apply a bit more autumn lawn feed. Finish off your lawn repairs, last chance for spiking and scarifying, it’s also ideal to lay turf this month. Keep lawn free of leaves and other debris (disease magnet). Now is the time to dig out big tufts and couch grass, repair or re-turf. You can get a grip on moss now, not Kate, but that other stuff that blights a Princetown lawn! Use a moss killer with dichloropen and not a lawn sand, I know because I tried lawn sand once and it was a disaster! Keep an eye on worms; too many casts which can be brushed away now can be controlled in spring with a lawn sand application. November: When there’s no frost or snow and it’s not wet, (‘Ha! This is Princetown!’ I hear you say!), you can mow once with the cutters up high. That’s it for November. But whilst we contemplate a forthcoming year, now is the time to plan for spring. Maintain your equipment (give Carl a call!), oil it all up for winter and store dry in your shed. Keep an eye on your lawn and brush up any further leaf fall and casts. December: Do not walk on your lawn in a heavy frost or if it’s sodden as this causes immense damage. You can lay turf on a fine day’s forecast. Other than that, put your feet up or build a snowman! If there are any questions about my jottings or a general query about your garden send them to the editor, I am happy to try and answer them in the next issue. Until then, enjoy your garden!
