ROOF OVERVIEW

www.rooftraining.co.uk Issue 12 Spring 2012 ROOF OVERVIEW

Welcome to the latest issue of Roof Overview – and it is no surprise that many articles this time are about

the Roofing Awards, the finalists, and the great projects they have been working on.

The Roofing Awards are an inspirational event, where for one day we are able to forget the challenges of our own situations and share the success of the finalists and eventual award-winners. It’s a perfect opportunity to catch up with old friends and colleagues, meet newcomers to the industry, and put faces to names. The National Federation of Roofing Contractors, together with the event partners and sponsors, the competitors, and everyone who takes time out to attend the event, are to be congratulated for this marvellous business and social occasion.

Other awards also feature in this issue, as do new initiatives, partnerships, training

courses, and the achievements of roofing contractors. New products and services also make for interesting reading, so you’ll find plenty to suit as you browse through the pages.

The next issue of Roof Overview will be published in early June and, from then on, it will continue in its quarterly pattern. This way we can feature the post-Roofing Awards excitement and, in the following issue, preview another major industry event, SkillBuild, which takes place in September.

If you would like to receive a regular electronic copy of Roof Overview, please e-mail [email protected] with your name, company and e-mail address. The four futuristic ventilation shafts on London’s Blackwall Tunnel would not be out of place on the set of the upcoming James Bond film.

Forming part of the three-year, £49 million refurbishment of this vital link across the Thames, Sika-Trocal single ply membrane was specified for its versatility and long-term waterproofing performance in the much-needed upgrade of the 114-year-old tunnel and its unusual

‘flying saucer’ ventilation domes – and the project has now been shortlisted in this year’s Roofing Awards.

Faced with the challenges of designing and installing a waterproofing system for a domed roof that features opening mechanical petals, architects Acanthus LW worked with specialist contractor Robertson Roofing to come up with an innovative

solution for this unusual single ply membrane application.

Appearing at ground level as raised concrete domes, a distinctive feature of the ventilation domes are the curved ‘petal’ sections which presented their own challenges for Robertson’s installation team. A Sika-Trocal type S membrane was installed in a manner which ensured that the layout of flaps gave the best aesthetic appearance to the finished roof. The domed roof shape also required Sika-Trocal laminated metal detailing to follow the curved line of perimeter gutters and vent segments.

In addition, the installation team were required to create and install a Sika-Trocal secret gutter around the base of the vent petals and a curved perimeter gutter to follow the profile of the existing curved concrete parapet at the base of the new plywood dome.

Both Sika-Trocal and its licensee contractors Robertson Roofing are keeping their fingers crossed that they will be successful in this year’s awards.

ROOF OVERVIEW Issue 12 Spring 2012 www.rooftraining.co.uk

– Liquid Roofing and Waterproofing Association –

Apprentices receive specialist liquid applied roofing training as LRWA launches SAP

In January 2012 the Liquid Roofing and Waterproofing Association (LRWA) launched the first-ever Specialist Apprenticeship Programme (SAP) in liquid applied roofing in

the UK. The fully grant-aided, two-year course based

at the LRWA Training Centre at Briggs Amasco in Birmingham, has an intake of four apprentices from roofing contractors who are completing modules that cover all aspects of roofing, but with a particular emphasis on liquid applications and the technical and practical aspects of using the differing chemistries within the liquid roofing industry.

“Many apprenticeship programmes neglect to dedicate adequate time and emphasis on training for liquid applications,” said Terry Wain, LRWA technical secretary.

“We cannot ignore the fact that liquid roofing is a growing market and at the LRWA we feel it is our responsibility to ensure our future roofers have the necessary skills to work in this fast-paced and competitive market.”

One of the aims of the specialist apprenticeship programme is to show the candidates that within the umbrella of ‘liquid applied membranes’ there are several different ways to achieve a first-class waterproofing project. The candidates have now completed module seven of a 24-module programme, and are realising that there are different chemistries for different roofing scenarios, which all have different application methods.

The practical training is being conducted by fully-trained instructors from the LRWA manufacturer members, who ensure that the

practical training is of the highest calibre as the instruction is given by specialists in their own particular field.

So far, candidates have been given training on polyurethanes by Sika Liquid Plastics, and polyester technology, by Kemper Systems. Future training will include modules on insulation, car parks, and solar/PV panels, and will involve both technical presentations and practical training sessions.

The success of the first intake of candidates means that the LRWA is now looking for candidates for a new intake that will start in September/October 2012. We at the LRWA feel that being the training provider ensures that the candidates get the best instruction from within the industry by instructors who are totally up-to-date with modern technology.

For more information on the LRWA, its new apprenticeship programme, or how to become a contractor member, visit www.lrwa.org.uk.

TrainingFree one-day MCS courses The one-day Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) course, developed in conjunction with the National Association of Professional Inspectors and Testers (NAPIT), will guide your company through the records and procedures expected to gain MCS accreditation, and will help set up systems which can be checked by a NAPIT inspector on a follow-up visit.

Courses have so far taken place in Leeds, Stockport, London and Melksham (near Bath), and a further five are planned throughout other areas of the country.

Full details of the course, dates and venues can be obtained from NFRC training support, Tanya Coutts, via [email protected].

Solar installation coursesThe one-day installation courses have been extremely well received, and to date 13 pitched courses have been successfully completed, with a further four planned. While this completes our initial target for the pitched roofing courses, additional courses may be available on request.

In May we will be starting the flat roofing courses, followed by the sheeting and cladding courses in August. Locations and dates are still being confirmed. Please state your interest to Tanya Coutts using the above details.

CompetitionsBelow is a brief overview of the current status of the two major Young Roofing Award competitions:

SkillBuild 2012 This year’s event will be held at Preston College, between September 12 and 14, with the winners being celebrated at a Gala Dinner in the prestigious Guild Hall on the Friday evening. The roofing disciplines covered will be slating and tiling, sheeting and cladding, built-up bituminous roofing, and single ply roofing.

To get to the finals, roofing trainees must battle their way through heats or another selection process to ensure they meet the standards required.

IFD World Championship for Young Roofers 2012 Taking place this year in Lucerne, Switzerland, from November 14 to 16, the event will see the UK looking to defend gold and silver medals won at the previous competition in Belfast 2010. Competing in teams of two, made up of previous SkillBuild winners, the UK will compete in both the slating and tiling and the waterproofing (flat roofing) disciplines.

For more details on the heats or the world championship, please contact Tanya Coutts for details at [email protected].

What’s in a word? Well, as it turns out, quite a lot when such a small word as ‘or’ is added to standards and qualifications.

Since it was first written, the NVQ for built-up roofing has required the trainee to achieve an acceptable level of competence in both pour ‘and’ roll, and torch-on methods of application. Over the years, a number of contractors have stopped using the pour and roll method and concentrated on using torch-on systems, which has led to difficulties for candidates trying to achieve their NVQs.

Changes needed to be made and, following much debate amongst employers, assessors and others, the National Occupational Standards have recently been changed to ‘and/or’ with regard to pour and roll and/or torch-on, which means that evidence can come from one or both types, in line with how the industry has moved in recent times.

NFRC and others are now in the process of lobbying the awarding bodies to ensure this change is transferred quickly into the actual NVQ qualifications (ie QCF units) to

ensure that candidates are able to get the necessary evidence from the workplace. This subtle, but important, change means that roofers will get access to the qualifications they require, and that employers should feel more able to support training and assessment centres, some of which have had to close due to a lack of support.

We achieved the change that was requested, but it’s now over to those who wanted it to respond and justify the action taken, by putting more candidates through the qualifications.

Training underpins the Roofing AwardsThe Roofing Awards recognise and underline the fact that the roofing industry has some of the most skilled, dedicated and hard-working contractors within the construction industry.

This year is no exception. The foundation of this lies in training, and it should be commended that some of the finalists’ projects this year saw companies able to take on apprentices, passing on their valuable skills and expertise, and hopefully generating future award-winning roofing contractors.

While there are 12 categories, covering all the major disciplines, the awards have a number of individual prizes, such as the Exceptional Contribution to Training, which is in partnership with ConstructionSkills. This award is to formally recognise the individual or company who they believe has done the most within the roofing industry to promote and lead training. The Safety in Roofing awards, Health and Safety Champion, and last year’s SkillBuild winners (the Young Roofers UK competition), are also recognised and congratulated again for their tremendous hard work.

As you can tell, the Roofing Awards are all-encompassing and are just another way to show that the industry is continually progressing, improving and reaffirming its position, not only within the construction industry, but also in the eyes of the clients.

These thoughts are echoed by SIG Roofing and Roofline, who underpin the Roofing Awards, working in partnership and with passion to support the roofing industry.

Hosting the awards are the Liquid Roofing and Waterproofing Association (LRWA), the National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC), the Roofing Tile Alliance (RTA), CompetentRoofer, the Lead Contractors Association (LCA), the Lead Sheet Association (LSA) and the Single Ply Roofing Association (SPRA).

The key partners are B&CE Benefit Schemes (The People’s Pension), The British Land Company PLC, the Green Roof Centre, Life+, ConstructionSkills, Electrical Contractors Insurance Company (ECIC) and Quality Assured National Warranties (QANW). Sponsors are as follows: Associated Lead Mills, Cupa Natural Slate, EJOT, Flag-Soprema, ICB, Icopal, IKO plc, John Brash & Co, Kingspan Limited, Marley

Eternit, OHS Limited, Redland, Renolit Cramlington, Rockwool, SealEco Ltd, Sika Limited, SFS Intec and WJ Horrod.

The winners of the individual awards and the categories will be announced at the Annual Congress Awards Lunch on May 18, 2012, at the Hilton Metropole in Birmingham. You can view the 2012 finalists at www.nfrc.co.uk/nfrc/media-centre/roofing-awards-2012.

ROOF OVERVIEW

www.rooftraining.co.uk Issue 12 Spring 2012 ROOF OVERVIEW

When I look back now to the mid-1970s and the stuff we had, compared to kids today, and we are supposed to be in the worst recession ever, according to the media – what a load of rubbish! Kids today don’t know they are born; most of them are spoilt rotten!

’It was only a matter of time before

‘Rooferman’, the industry’s self-styled entrepreneur, directed some of his energies into writing a book. And before you’ve gone

half way down the first page you’re treated to one of his infamous, and forthright, statements!

Yorkshire-born Chris Hopkins, owner of the Ploughcroft empire, does not suffer fools gladly. Nor does he have any time for bullies, time-wasters, back-stabbing employees or jobsworths.

In his 42 years, this working class lad from the heart of the industrial north has had a fire in his belly to succeed. Not succeed in an everyday sense of the word, but to succeed in the way a mountaineer would not make do with Mont Blanc when there was still Everest to climb, or an explorer could sleep easy while there were still unmapped parts of the planet.

He is driven to be the best. Not just the best in Yorkshire or England, but the world.

Innovation and his own gut instinct have helped him, and his string of businesses within the Ploughcroft group, to become a major player in the construction industry, to be a ground-breaker in the development of solar roofing, and to take training to areas the ‘professionals’ failed to recognise.

In this no-holds-barred, and at times brutally honest, autobiography, Chris describes his battles, defeats and victories, along the way. His personal fight with dyslexia and stammering; his physical combat with schoolyard bullies and those who fell short of his expectations of ‘hard graft’.

He describes how he tackles the disbelief expressed by government agencies at this upstart from the world of roofing suggesting his could be the better way, and how his belief in renewable energy led to his seat at the top table of the Green Construction Board.

But he has never sought to be a much-admired philanthropist. The profit motive has been a driving force from the beginning and this book is punctuated by asides and tips to help the would-be

entrepreneur avoid some of the pitfalls, and enjoy some of the successes, in his climb to fame and fortune.

However, Chris has never lost sight of the wider picture and his ability to share his success with those less fortunate – this time he is donating ten per cent of the book’s proceeds to the Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice in Huddersfield.

The Ploughcroft Journey will be available from the beginning of July, price £9.50 plus £1.50 postage and packing in the UK, or £2.50 postage and packing worldwide. Please contact Amanda Edwards for details of how to pre-order your copy at the discounted price of £8.50 (plus postage and packing).

Training from Redland – your choice, our expertise

In today’s tough trading environment, cutting costs is paramount and staff training may be one cost that passes by the wayside. However, this is often counter-productive. Training

can bring competitive advantage to a business and any measures that do should not be ignored or cut, especially in a tight market.

Roofing contractors are no different. For example, being able to offer solar PV installations on roofs represents a competitive advantage over those that can’t. Correct training is the best way to understand how to do this.

As a market-leading pitched roofing material manufacturer, it comes as no surprise that Redland offers a wide choice of training courses. All are based at the company’s dedicated Redland Training Centre near Cirencester. These include:t Solar PV training – a course dedicated to

the knowledge and installation of in-roof PV products.

t One-day components course – giving an overview of the Redland components range, as well as hands-on experience of fitting these products.

t Bespoke lead design and application training – background and hands-on experience of lead work on roofs.

t One-day Rapid Flashing course – exploring the versatility of this popular lead replacement product from Redland.

t Two-day roofing estimating course – an excellent introduction to roof estimating.Other course topics covered include double-

lapped and plain tiling, slates and interlocking clay tiles. The courses are open to anyone, and are run in small groups. This ensures the attendees will get maximum interaction with teachers and colleagues.

Opened in 1983, the Redland Training Centre comprises two large training workshops, a yard area and two large conference rooms. This provides the perfect training environment, as courses can be run in all weathers indoors and on easy-to-work-on rigs. The full Redland product range is available on site for training and demonstration purposes.

The centre offers numerous break-out rooms for classroom-based learning that can also be used for bespoke training courses. Redland has a set training schedule but the entire centre can be hired for one-off training courses and events. Roofing expertise is always on site, ready to help with any demonstrations and workshops.

The Redland Training Centre is run by Matheau Woodyatt, technical training manager, who recently joined the company. Matheau has significant experience within the industry, spending six years at the National Federation of Builders.

He said: “I am looking forward to expanding the activities of the Redland Training Centre in line with the new products and activities developed by the wider business. I also want to raise the profile of Redland through our support of colleges and other external organisations, and I will be busy promoting the centre as a hub through which the wider business can communicate, educate and innovate.

“Redland already supports colleges in the UK through the donation of Redland products for use in their own training facilities, and this is something I want to build on. I’m also looking forward to developing new courses, such as the one-day Rapid Flashing course, which will highlight the versatility and quality of this popular Redland product through practical demonstration.”

ROOF OVERVIEW

www.rooftraining.co.uk Issue 12 Spring 2012 ROOF OVERVIEW

In just over one year, the East Midlands Roofing College has made

such an impact on local training that it has won one of the prestigious Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) awards.

Despite the economic downturn, this training facility was built with financial support from a local roofing firm and a £40,000 grant from the East Midlands NTI Catapulting Kids Further! Programme, funded by the East Midlands Development Agency. The founders of the college worked tirelessly for two years to make the college happen.

In January 2011 the East Midlands Roofing College opened its doors for the first time to 12 young people keen to start on a roofing career.

Livia Williams (pictured), the director of the college who is also the group training officer for the Midland Roof Training Group,

is passionate about training and supporting young people – and knew that the best way of encouraging young people into the profession was to introduce a college locally.

“Roofing is a dying trade, and if more isn’t done to nurture young people and encourage them to take on roofing skills, the roofing industry will suffer,” she said.

Working with over 128 roofing companies in the Midlands, she has developed a highly-qualified team of assessors and tutors for the college who have real ‘on-the-job’ experience and they are valuable assets of the roofing industry.

The college has now trained more than three intakes of roof slating and tiling apprentices and works closely with New College Nottingham, ConstructionSkills, the National Federation of

Roofing Contractors and the Institute of Roofing. The college offers apprenticeship training

for 16 to 18 year olds and those who are 19 years and over. Any roofing company across the East Midlands can send their apprentices to the college for the best instruction in roof slating and tiling Level 2, the advanced apprenticeship in roof slating and tiling, and heritage roofing apprenticeships Level 2 and 3.

The college also offers qualifications via the on-site assessment and training (OSAT) route for experienced workers.

The nearby Bulwell Academy is a partner of the college – which offers taster days and work experience free of charge to academy students in year nine, ten and 11. As well as its work with the Bulwell Academy, college representatives visit local schools to take part in assemblies and participate in career events and job fairs.

The college is playing a big part in the delivery of the very first Specialist Apprenticeship Programme in single ply, in conjunction with Single Ply Roofing Association (SPRA) and the ConstructionSkills specialist team.

“This is a milestone for the roofing industry and we have the support of the single ply manufacturers, who are also getting involved in the delivery of the training,” said Livia.

The college works closely with the Nottingham City Council 14-16 Team in supporting the special education needs and disabled students from local schools year nine, ten and 11.

“This is an extremely challenging programme and, equally, very rewarding – we are working with students on an introduction to roofing programme, supporting them with life and employability skills, giving them the information, advice and guidance they need so much during their development age,” said Livia.

The college also supports training for the renewable and sustainable roofing technology and delivers solar PV training for roofers.

It is a satellite of the Lead Sheet Association and provides basic lead bossing and lead welding courses, as well as specialist heritage leadwork training.

Roofing is a dying trade, and if more isn’t done to nurture young

people and encourage them to take on roofing skills, the roofing

industry will suffer. ’

Over the last three years the Lead Sheet Association has helped nearly 2,000 people gain new skills and expertise in working with lead. At its state-of-the-

art training centre in East Peckham, Kent, it offers courses to suit every need, from basic bossing and welding to more complex and specialist courses.

We have designed our courses and schedule around the needs of those we train, with flexible timings, on-site assessments where appropriate, and covering all skill levels.

For those involved in installing lead, a taster of some of the courses available is below:t Basic bossing and welding – this is the first

formal hands-on training experience in using lead as they are the two most common skills. Courses run regularly.

t City and Guilds 6055 Leadworkers’ Certificate – this is the natural progression for those who have completed the basic bossing and welding and want to gain a recognised qualification. The course is broken down into four different modules, allowing students flexibility in the pattern of attendance.

t NVQs – these are arranged over a series of modules, which includes core skills, training in the workshop and on-the-job assessment.

t On-site assessment and training – this is available for the more experienced leadworker.

t Specialist Apprentice Programme (SAP) – this is a two-year training programme for new entrants to the roofing industry wanting to specialise in leadwork. We also run a specialist course in heritage leadwork.

t Hard metals – courses are available at basic, intermediate and advanced levels for all hard metals.

For those involved in design and build we can offer seminars and CPD modules for specifiers, either on site or at your own premises. Our team of technical experts have built up years of experience in dealing with different design and installation situations and have a wealth of information to share.

If you can’t get to Kent but are interested in training, you can also undertake some of the courses at our accredited satellite training centres around the UK, the locations of which are detailed on the LSA website.

We are happy to offer guidance and advice to help you with your training requirements. You can either fill in the online assessment form on our website, or give us a call.

Described by managing director Nigel Miles as a ‘once in a lifetime’ project, the spectacular leadwork involved in the refurbishment of the Regent Palace

Hotel in London, under main contractor Sir Robert McAlpine, has won the Murdoch Award for NDM

(Metal Roofing & Cladding) Ltd for a record third time.

Sponsored by Associated Lead Mills as part of their commitment to quality in metal roofing, the Murdoch Award is named in honour of Dick Murdoch, author of the ‘Lead Sheet Manuals’ and has become the ultimate accolade for the leadwork craft. Organised as an annual competition for its members by the Lead Contractors Association, the Murdoch Award-winning project is effectively the very best of the best.

The announcement of the winners of the Murdoch Award and Murdoch Sponsors Award took place at the end of the Gala Dinner night at the 2011 LCA conference.

Immediate past chairman David Martin read out a message from Dick Murdoch, who was unfortunately unable to be present in person. Dick paid tribute to the high

quality of the entrants, which once again gave the judges a very difficult task in deciding the finalists.

The judges eventually narrowed down the entrants to three finalists: A P Chant for their work on a Palladian country mansion in Somerset, Brian Turner for his presentation at the Chelsea Flower Show, and Vulcan Leadwork for their work on Laddingford House in Kent.

After much deliberation (and argument!) the judges decided that the winner of the 2011 Murdoch Sponsors Award were A P Chant and Anthony Appleton, and Robert Male, who actually worked on the project, stepped forward to receive the award from Rod Bexson of sponsors Associated Lead Mills.

Turning to the Murdoch Award itself, Dick confessed that the judges’ task this year was a little more straightforward than usual.

He paid tribute to the entry from John Fulton (Plumbers) who, having won the Murdoch Award in 2006 and 2009, once again had reached the final, for the covering of a turret, flat roof, flashings and weatherings on the Pearce Institute in Glasgow, demonstrating a remarkable consistency in high- quality leadwork.

Dick was also delighted to see a superb covering of a pitched roof with hollow rolls at St Nicholas Church at Wetwang, Yorkshire by Geoff Neal (Roofing) make the final, and confessed in any other year it would most probably have been the winner.

However, all the judges agreed there was one stand-out entry this year and Dick was delighted to announce that the winner of the Murdoch Award, for a record third time, was NDM (Metal Roofing & Cladding) for the Sir Robert McAlpine refurbishment of the Regent Palace Hotel in London, including flat roofing and dormers and, in particular, the unique ornamental lion cartouches.

NDM managing director Nigel Miles said: “This was definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and one that demanded close attention to every critical detail from the outset. It was a challenge to everyone involved and I am delighted that their efforts have been recognised and rewarded in this way.

“The lion cartouches are quite magnificent, and it has been a privilege for us to work on them. I think they have been beautifully restored and it is a tribute to the skills we have on our staff that I believe we have exceeded the very high standards demanded by the architect, Donald Insall.”

Graham Hudson, of sponsors Associated Lead Mills, was delighted with the decision of the judges, particularly as it was his own company that was involved in supplying the lead sheet from Jamestown Metals for the project.

The 2011 Murdoch Award and Murdoch Sponsors Award will be featured at the National Roofing Awards event hosted by the NFRC in Birmingham in May.

Entry is now open for the 2012 Murdoch and Murdoch Sponsors Awards – send information and photographs to the LCA secretariat in East Grinstead, or e-mail [email protected].

Readers in the West Midlands will be well aware of the name Ampteam. Knowledge-based specialists in the provision of gutter lining and rainwater

management systems, their products combine the culmination of years of technical and engineering expertise gained within the roofing industry.

Managing director Bob Mantle has made no secret over the years that he is a stickler for perfection, both in the products he offers and the service that his team provides. Quite simply, nothing but the best will do.

“Our over-riding mission is to become the UK’s leading gutter lining and rainwater management solutions provider,” he explained.

“But we can only achieve this through a combination of high-quality materials and our team of highly-focused, skilled and knowledgeable staff, who can deliver bespoke solutions to our customers’ individual requirements.”

Taking the product first, Ampteam designed the Unifold gutter lining system some 15 years ago, and from its introduction to the present day, its development has continued to produce the most complete and effective lining system currently available.

The Unifold system and its derivatives are the only products which are manufactured by Ampteam, so the company’s energies are entirely focused towards design, manufacturing and service excellence. Unifold is a totally-engineered product, manufactured using processes either developed by Ampteam, or using the latest technology.

“Our machinery provides supreme accuracy; for example, folding tolerance is within plus or minus 0.3mm over a girth of 1500mm with complete repeatability. These are tolerances usually unheard of within our industry,” explained Bob.

“Our fabrication techniques, while employing basic sheet metal technology, are totally unique. Using our hinge principles we are able to form and fold components that would normally be impossible. This ability has been an invaluable aid to the system and its component development.”

Bob added that Unifold is guaranteed for 20 years, which includes the installation; and to date, there has never been a call on this guarantee.

Products do not, however, install themselves. Unifold is installed only by approved contractors, whose installation teams have been fully-trained by Ampteam personnel, at the company premises.

In addition, gutters are surveyed by Ampteam personnel wherever possible. “We actively encourage contractors to use our survey services and this is available throughout Great Britain,” said Bob.

“Each Unifold solution is designed to provide the client, the building occupier, with the best possible solution and on occasions this will result

in an improvement in performance to the original gutter.

“Each Unifold consignment is supplied to site in its most complete form possible, leaving site personnel the easiest of tasks to fully install the system. This helps to provide a quality installation every time.”

So far, so good; and Bob is determined that his team will continue to be trained in their own individual areas and respective skills.

“We are about to take on two apprentices, who will follow the Institute of Roofing educational route – one, in production

management, and the other, in company surveying,” he said.

“They will also be going out on site, to see what takes place in the real world, as part of their educational process.”

Bob is passionate in his belief that young people are the lifeblood of the industry’s future, and that there needs to be solid, established educational processes for these young people to follow.

“Organisations such as the Institute of Roofing, and the National Federation of Roofing Contractors, can play a major role in attracting school-leavers into the industry, encouraging a professional route for them, and ensuring that there are worthwhile qualifications and career opportunities to attract the best youngsters,” he added.

“I would urge those individuals with the influence and decision-making mandates to create these opportunities for an industry that we can all be proud of.”

Help with preparing a company skills matrix and training planGroup training officer Denise Cherry is on a campaign to help each member company to prepare a skills matrix and a training plan for their business.

“This is a very important part of planning for training, to have a really positive effect on business performance, and both these documents are frequently requested when companies need to show competence for initiatives such as the Construction Health and Safety Scheme (CHAS) and Safe Contractor,” she explained.

“Preparation of these documents does not take too long; we use a range of templates and I am happy to call into individual company premises to help with these.”

Burton Roofing Merchants of Chandlers Ford feel that, as a supplier to the roofing sector, they need to promote and be involved with industry training.

The Chandlers Ford branch recently moved into a new unit in School Lane, containing two purpose-fitted training rooms which the group can use to promote training to group members.

Group training officer Brian Middlemiss said: “This additional facility now allows us to promote training in the Southampton area, our first course having been an over-subscribed mobile scaffold tower training (PASMA) course. The cost of this one-day course is very reasonable, at just £100 for members, and £120 for non-members.

“This is a tremendous venue which I hope we can make excellent use of, including the next site managers safety training scheme, which is a

day-release, five-day course run over five weeks. Have you any candidates for this, and have you any further training requirements that would be suitable for this venue?”

The group’s second new member is Kingspan Insulation Limited. Kingspan will provide the group with training, and give advice and information on insulation and insulation products, including how to achieve part L in problematic situations on refurbishment works.

They will also provide courses on the installation of tapered schemes, and continuing professional development (CPD). What are your needs and requirements in Kingspan’s area of expertise? Lewis Jones is prepared to run a presentation, and question and answer session, at the next steering group meeting, if there are sufficient numbers.

Our courses, venues, and support just get better and better!

Special Apprentice Programme (SAP)The next Specialist Apprenticeship Programme (SAP) in heritage roofing starts in June at South Coast Roof Training. This course covers traditional roofing skills in various materials: slate, horsham stone, peg tiles, traditional features of swept valleys, lace valleys, etc. Successful completion of this course will result in a Level 3 diploma in heritage roofing.

YouTube is the place for trainingWell – that isn’t entirely true, as Brian hasn’t yet reserved a regular slot, but you can watch a ConstructionSkills video explaining the changes to the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) health and safety test.

Brian is in the process of gathering more information which he can pass on to group members, but the changes, which took effect on April 1, include new questions, revamped sections, environmental issues and hypothetical scenarios.

So if you are planning to take the CSCS test in the near future, please make sure you are aware of the revisions.

Steering group meetingA date for your diary – the next meeting will take place at Burton Roofing Merchants, Chandlers Ford, on May 31, time to be confirmed.

Attendees will be treated to a presentation from HCS Safety on continuing professional development (CPD), an area which is becoming increasingly important as businesses compete for work in these difficult economic times.

Brian said: “If there is sufficient support for this type of event, the group would like to run it twice-yearly in conjunction with the Institute of Roofing. This would give us all a chance to catch up with fellow-members, share ideas, best practice, and benefit from the IoR’s knowledge and services.

“Please contact me if you would like to support such an opportunity.”

Site safety plus grantsGood news for companies in-scope to ConstructionSkills; the grants for these courses remain at £52.50 per day. They include the five-day site managers safety training scheme (SMSTS), full course and refresher, the two-day site supervisors safety training scheme (SSSTS), full course and refresher, and the directors responsibilities for safety course.

Would any members have delegates so that we can run these courses? There is a minimum number required by the awarding body before we can supply this training. It would be a great shame if we could not take advantage of these great prices to keep on top of essential safety legislation.

Let us help you get the most out of your training budget!

There is no big secret behind Lane Roofing’s success, according to managing director Gary Lane. Investing in the company’s people through training, and

passing on the experience gained over the years, bring many benefits to the business and its clients alike.

Continuing professional development is paramount to Lane Roofing, both at management and operative level. “We keep up-to-date on health and safety issues, methods of works, plant operations and roofing systems, through training delivered by organisations such as the Institute of Roofing and the Midland Roof Training Group,” Gary explained.

Lane Roofing also enjoys an excellent working relationship with many organisations in the construction industry. One of these is with Tata Steel, through Lisa Hands, and in January this year Gary received a certificate to certify that Lane Roofing is a Platinum Steel Approved Contractor.

Another thriving partnership is with Sika Sarnafil; Lane Roofing has achieved the highest standards of employee training and installation quality required to become a Sika Sarnafil registered contractor.

The company’s accreditations are not found wanting, either. Lane Roofing has recently become a member of the CompetentRoofer Scheme, which means that the company’s works will be compliant with current roofing and building regulations.

It has also recently achieved ContractorPlus certification in recognition of reaching health and safety standards set out by ContractorPlus.

The future is bright with solar! One of the most recent major developments has been in solar. Lane Roofing – which is MCS accredited – is one of only a few companies to provide both roofing and solar solutions that are backed by the strength of an experienced team.

“Our track record of providing high-quality products, collaborating with reputable partners, and creating a strong relationship with our customers, means that when working with Lane Roofing and the Lane Group, you are working with the best,” said Gary.

“We can install the whole solar system, from the intricate details of the electrics, to the feed-in tariff into the grid.”

The Lane Group also offers a maintenance

package on solar panels and systems, which means that they visit a client’s property to survey the solar panels and the system, making sure all the solar panels are working correctly, are free from debris, and are working with the optimum efficiency.

“Lane Roofing is a member of the REAL Assurance Scheme, for the supply of renewable, micro heat and power generators, including solar PV and ground source heat systems,” added Gary.

Never a dull momentOne of the benefits of offering such a diverse and high-quality service is that Lane Roofing comes across some interesting work, which lesser companies would not be offered. One of these was from the Sanderson Business Centre, whose old Sandersons Wallpaper Factory – dating back to the 19th century – required a high level of skill, experience and commitment.

Once Lane had met up with SBC’s Ian Steel and inspected the building and roof areas, it became very clear what was needed and a project brief was outlined. SBS said they could not completely vacate the building, therefore the building was to remain live, and this alone brought other issues to the project.

Lane carried out risk assessments and was able to produce a method of works that suited SBC with the minimal disruption to the tenants and for Lane to carry out the project. “The skills and experience of Lane’s management and roofing teams were vital to ensure that the project went as smoothly as possible, from the first stage of planning and preparing, to delivery and installation of the roof system,” explained Gary.

“This included meeting the Health & Safety Executive’s requirements to the Control of Asbestos at Work Regulations (2006), the monitoring of the works, and the clearance of asbestos waste.”

Safety was paramount throughout the entire project, which went smoothly, without one incident or any damage to the property or equipment within the building – no mean achievement, given the intricacies of the work involved.

The sky really is the limit for Lane Roofing’s talents

The Sikalastic® 618 system is backed up by the expertise of Sika Liquid Plastics, renowned for its high-quality, high-performance Decothane systems. The aim of the new product launch is to provide a waterproofing solution that is available to all roofing contractors, in particular those who have projects where a liquid membrane is preferred, but the full service and guarantee available to Sika Liquid Plastics Quality Assured Contractors is not required.

The Institute of Roofing’s long-awaited distance e-learning courses have now been announced and are set to revolutionise the methods of gaining valuable

qualifications.Executive officer for the IoR, Roger White, said:

“Working closely with Leeds College of Building, we have spent quite some time listening to the needs of our members and the roofing industry in general. This is reflected in the thought that has gone into developing distance learning, and incorporating a wide range of realistic benefits for candidates and their employers.”

This B-TEC construction subsidiary diploma course (Level 3), which is equivalent to three A Levels and is a qualification recognised by QCF, utilises 12 relevant units to the roofing industry, including health, safety and welfare in construction and the built environment, sustainable construction, mathematics in construction and the built environment, science and materials in construction and the built environment, and building technology in construction.

These units are complemented by three compulsory modules, one of which can be selected from a range of seven options.

Compulsory modules are: t Environmental and sustainable roofingt Competent roofer building regulations.

Optional modules are: t Liquid applied roofing and waterproofingt Mastic asphaltt Reinforced bituminous membranes (includes

built-up felt roofing)t Sheeting and cladding/rainscreent Single ply roofingt Slating and tilingt Specialised and traditional/heritage roof

coverings.

Candidates have up to two years to complete the course and may also choose to do more of the optional modules at a small additional cost.

On successful completion (dependant on the level obtained), candidates will be awarded Institute of Roofing membership at either licentiate or associate level. The course, which costs £1,700 (payment split over two years), also provides a route to a CSCS card.

“It is expected that at least two-thirds of the cost – dependant on companies’ and candidates’ individual circumstances – may be covered by grants from ConstructionSkills, which would equate to an actual cost for each candidate of less than £300 per year,” explained Roger.

Grants may vary from one individual to the

next, so employers and candidates wanting to find out about the appropriate and relevant grants for their circumstances should contact their local ConstructionSkills company development adviser. Further grant details are available on the ConstructionSkills website http://www.cskills.org/levy-grant/contact-us/index.aspx.

The course opened for candidates’ registration on April 16 and Roger is pleased with the response.

“We have already had quite some interest for this course in the UK and from overseas, and will be marketing it widely,” he added.

Titanic entertainmentDon’t forget – this year’s AGM is taking place on October 11 at Titanic Belfast and the overall event is shaping up to be a real extravaganza, with an evening of Irish entertainment. Watch this space for more details!

ROOF OVERVIEW

www.rooftraining.co.uk Issue 12 Spring 2012 ROOF OVERVIEW

The newest of the regional roof training groups has been making great progress, thanks in no small part to group training officer Lesley Hughes and the enthusiasm

of its members. Together with Coleg Gwent and the National

Federation of Roofing Contractors, solar training on pitched and flat roofs will soon be available. Basic skills training in lead welding and bossing techniques will also be available, in conjunction with the Lead Sheet Association (LSA), at Coleg Gwent. This can lead to the City & Guilds lead worker’s certificate 6055.

Could you be an ambassador for construction? Are you passionate about your work, happy to share experiences with others, and capable of motivating young people and helping them see that a career in construction has potential for them?

If so, you could be the ideal person for the job of a construction ambassador volunteer. The

group, together with ConstructionSkills, will provide a day’s training and you will be expected to attend a few seminars every year.

“Please encourage a member of your team, as this will raise your company’s profile within the industry, improve staff motivation and retention, engage with schools and help to win new contracts,” explained Lesley.

Tom Duxbury, heritage training officer of Twyi Centre, Llandeilo is running a leadwork course in association with the LSA on July 5. He is also offering an NVQ Level 3 diploma in heritage skills (construction) – roof slating and tiling occupations.

Bursaries availableTwyi Centre is inviting applications for roofing bursaries, worth £12,800, from anyone who has experience of working as a roofer, or holds an NVQ Level 2 or equivalent qualification in roofing. It is also looking for people who have an interest in the conservation and maintenance of old buildings. Anyone who is interested should contact Lesley.

It is perhaps no coincidence that one of London’s foremost and aptly-named roofing companies, Capital Roofing, is a Roofing Awards finalist for its work on the world’s

number one-voted department store, and a national pride, Selfridges in Oxford Street.

The store was built in 1908 to a neo-classical design from the desk of American architect Daniel Burnham. Constructed in several phases, the original roofs have become increasingly complex over the years, with the addition of various plant and equipment associated with ancillary building services.

Joint managing director, Terry Peck, explained: “Capital Roofing was brought in for refurbishment works to the existing asphalt roof, which had deteriorated into a poor state of repair, with numerous leaks affecting the fabric and structure of the building. The practice of patch repairs had not proved cost-effective or reliable, and a more permanent solution was sought that would accommodate the numerous upstands and penetrations associated with the mechanical plant, while allowing access for maintenance teams.

“At the same time, it was essential that the refurbishment could be undertaken with minimum disruption to customers and staff.”

The need to complete the roofing works without impacting on the retail operation, particularly with regard to the HVAC and air- handling throughout the building, excluded the use of solvent-based materials.

“We proposed the use of Kemperol 2K-PUR cold-applied, fully-reinforced, solvent-free waterproofing system from Kemper System Ltd. Our decision to use this product over any other was that the Kemper 2K-PUR system is virtually odourless, making it highly suited to applications such as this large store, where even temporary closure of any part of the store was not an option. The system would bond very well to the existing asphalt and the need to dispose of large volumes of waste material was avoided,” Terry added.

The existing asphalt was prepared by repairing any blistering, fractures and slumps, and any loose material/debris removed. Following preparation, the roofs were primed and then waterproofed with Kemperol 2K-PUR. This two-component, polyurethane-based system, incorporates a reinforced polyester fleece which can be cut and formed on site, meaning that the numerous details, upstands and penetrations (typically the most vulnerable part of any roof waterproofing system) were handled quickly and easily. This not only saved on both installation time and costs,

but because the terminations were fully-bonded without the need for mechanical fixings, the roof waterproofing system was entirely seamless.

The roofing works at Selfridges totalled over 4000m², and were completed in good time with no disruption to operations at the store.

“We are delighted that the project was so successful that further areas of roofs have been commissioned, and the system is now the preferred choice for the future programme of roof upgrades,” said Terry.

“Selfridges will be introducing Kemper Stratex warm roof systems when they carry out the total refurbishment of the Selfridges Hotel later this year.

“Working on such a large project using the cold-applied liquid system also gave all our apprentices the chance to experience the many variations of challenging detail work, as well as working with a large, experienced workforce.”

It’s fingers crossed at Sika Sarnafil for 2012 Roofing Awards hopefuls!

Single ply roofing systems specialist Sika Sarnafil is celebrating two of its projects making the shortlist for the Roofing Awards in the hotly-contested single ply category.

First up is contractor Midland Single Ply Roofing’s refurbishment of an historic University of Oxford library using Sika Sarnafil membrane.

Part of the Bodleian Libraries complex, the Sackler Library is one of the university’s main research libraries and, while the building was less than ten years old, the roof suffered from condensation problems, which posed a real threat to the books below.

The refurbishment saw the Midland Single Ply Roofing team overcome a number of practical and security constraints to successfully install the new Sika Sarnafil roof.

The team had to strip the library’s existing lead roof covering, together with part of the timber structure below, then install the Sika Sarnafil G410-12ELF membrane in Lead Grey with lead batten rolls. Throughout the works, the library’s books remained below – this meant that making the roof

watertight and working to a tight timescale were vital.

Also in the running is Owlsworth Roofing’s refurbishment of the Hoopers Yard residence in north London, using Sika Sarnafil.

This project gave rise to two very different challenges, both of which Owlsworth Roofing successfully overcame to complete the job on time and on budget.

The first was a technical challenge. After pull-out tests showed that the originally-specified fixings would not meet wind uplift criteria, the team worked with the supplier to find and implement an alternative solution. This ensured the Sarnafil G410-18EL membrane in Light Grey was securely fastened.

The second challenge was keeping the occupied three-storey building dry while works were carried out. The residents of the penthouse suite directly beneath the roof had been plagued by water ingress for several years and were particularly worried about further leaks during works. But the team kept them dry – and happy – throughout.
