DYK?Did you know?
Duke Kahanamoku was a five-time Olympic medalist in
swimming. - after retiring from the Olympics, Kahanamoku
traveled internationally to give swimming exhibitions. It was during
this period that he popularized the sport of surfing, previously
known only in Hawaii, by incorporating surfing exhibitions into
these visits as well. His surfing exhibition at Sydney's
Freshwater Beach on December 23, 1914 is widely regarded
as a seminal event in the development of surfing in
Australia. On Kuhio Beach, a bronze statue of Duke
Kahanamoku welcomes you to
Waikiki with open arms.
DID YOUKNOW???
Sometimes called “The Gathering Place,” Oahu certainly lives up to its name. The third largest Hawaiian island is home to the majority of Hawaii’s diverse population, a fusion of east and west cultures rooted in the values and traditions of the Native Hawaiian people. It’s this fundamental contrast between the ancient and the modern that makes discovering Oahu so enjoyable.
In winter, the North Shore attracts hundreds of world-class surfers and thousands of spectators who come to watch the pros ride some the world’s largest waves.
The North Shore beaches including Waimea Bay are considered unsafe for swimming and snorkeling during the winter months, due to the massive swells. However a trip is well worth it – stroll through Hale’iwa Town and watch the sun set at one of the world’s most picturesque beaches.
Waikiki Beach is the “miracle mile”, a perfect convergence of
coral reef, crescent bay, white sand, blue water and gentle waves with the glorious backdrop of Diamond Head, an extinct volcanic crater connecting the sky to the water. There is surfing, swimming, outrigger canoe rides and catamaran sailing to break up a day of sunbathing.
Ala Moana Beach is crescent-shaped and separated from Waikiki by Magic Island – a park that attracts joggers, toy boat enthusiasts and picnickers. The spot is a favourite for swimming, sunbathing and stand-up paddling.
Kailua Beach and Lanikai Beach are favourites amongst the locals. It doesn’t get much more serene and beautiful than this area. Each of Oahu beaches are completely unique – close to town or far removed, they differ in age, sand texture, watersports, aquatic life and leisure activities.

Waikiki Activities
Shows“'Aha'aina - A Royal Hawaiian Luau”
Every Monday evening, The Royal Hawaiian,
A Luxury Collection Resort, pays homage to
Helumoa, the legendary playground of
Hawaiian royalty where the resort now
stands, with a modern interpretation of the
traditional Hawaiian feast called Aha ‘Aina, A
Royal Celebration.
Waikiki’s only oceanfront sit-down vignette
dinner show is a culinary and sensory
celebration, commemorating Hawaiian
culture and transforming the traditional
island experience in grand Royal
Hawaiian style.
“Before ‘luaus’ there were ‘Aha ‘Aina’—a feast
of food, mele (song) and hula,” says General
Manager, Kelly Hoen. “In ancient times the
Hawaiian people came together to celebrate
momentous occasions, these gatherings
were called Aha ‘Aina (which translates to
gathering for a meal). The Royal Hawaiian is
located on sacred grounds and we have
created a modern, yet timeless Aha ‘Aina to
honor the land’s majestic history through
food, song, stories, hula, and culture—a true
celebration of The Royal and its heritage.”
Held every Monday evening on The Royal
Hawaiian’s Ocean Lawn, with the
breathtaking backdrop of Waikiki Beach and
picturesque Diamond Head, the Aha ‘Aina is
composed of three spectacular acts. As
guests enter the Aha ‘Aina grounds, the
evening captures the spirit of traditional
Hawaii with time-honored activities such as
kapa-making (cloth made of pounded bark),
poi-pounding, and na lawai’a (tending of
fishing tools).
The night continues with the sound of a pu
(conch) calling guests to feast, where a
storyteller shares the significance of lei
giving, the ocean, and taro while guests dine
on exquisite pupu (hors d'oeuvres). After
dinner, the Helumoa story unfolds—a
dramatic performance, including hula and
song, commemorates ancient islanders’ rich
history and culture through a timeline of the
historic Royal Hawaiian to the contemporary
style of Hawaiian music
and dance.
The Royal Hawaiian’s Aha ‘Aina is a lavish
epicurean journey through time.

Want some local
knowledge?!Modern surfing originated in
Waikiki: The father of modern
surfing, Duke Kahanamoku grew
up in Waikiki. His family home was
actually where the Royal Hawai-
ian Hotel stands today. This
special beach was well known
even then for being a great place
to catch waves.
Oahu is the Hawaiian Island with
the largest population. It’s nick-
named 'The Gathering Place' with
a population 872,478 not count-
ing tourists!
The Iolani Palace on Oahhu is the
only royal palace in the United
States.
One-third of Hawaii’s best surfing
beaches are on Oahu.
On Oahu, you can visit historic
Kukaniloko, which is 'the place
of the sacred birthstones', a
half-acre plot of three-foot high
stones. Apparently the stones
served as delivery tables of a
sort for Hawaiian women in
labor. The stones surrounding
the central stone were for the
alii, the high chieftesses of Oahu,
who acted as midwives.
The famous crater on Waikiki
beach is called Diamond Head.
The crater's original name was
Laeahi meaning 'brow of the
tuna', but when British sailors
passed by this extinct volcano,
they saw crystals shimmer in the
sun and looked as if diamonds
were in the crater, hence the
name Diamond Head.
Temperature in Hawaii
In Honolulu there is an average high temperature of 31 degrees
Celsius and an average low temperature of 24 degrees Celsius
for the month of July.

Hawaii has its own time zone. It’s called Hawaiian Standard Time. There is no daylight savings time in Hawaii, which means that insummer, Hawaii is two hours behind the U.S. West Coast, while inwinter, Hawaii is three hours behind the U.S. West Coast.
Hawaii is the only U.S. state whose land areais increasing (from volcanic eruptions).

Traveling on
oahu
You can get around by car rental, shuttle,
taxi or Oahu’s public transportation system.
Many visitors also enjoy taking bus tours to
conveniently explore the Island. Others rent
mopeds and motorcycles. But to really
experience all that Oahu offers, you should
consider reserving a rental car in advance
from the Honolulu International Airport.
Oahu’s city transportation system is aptly
named “TheBus.” Fares are reasonable,
routes are extensive and there are special
visitor passes for multiple day uses. For more
information on fares, bus routes to popular
attractions and other useful information visit
http://www.thebus.org.
Another affordable option is the trolley. The
routes and destinations are not as extensive
as TheBus but the trolley goes to most
major tourist attractions and offer tickets for
unlimited rides over a certain number of
days. For more information visit
http://www.waikikitrolley.com or call (808)
593-2822.
Taxis are a great way to travel when in a
group and the cost can be shared. You can
find taxi stands at most major shopping
malls, in the business district and at the
airport. Note that rather than hailing a cab,
finding taxi stands at major shopping malls
and businesses as well as calling for pick-ups
via hotel concierge or phone is the
norm in Hawaii.
