A Note from Teachers

During the next four weeks, we will be learning about the diversity of families and family homes. Children will discover the essence of friendships and recognize that family pets are sometim'es among their best friends. We will move from friends at home, to friends at school, and finally to friends within the community. Children will develop an understanding of diversity, love, support, comfort, helpfulness, and cooperation.

Children will be learning to describe and classify objects by their attributes and will focus on one-to-one correspondence. Ask your child to help you match the socks in the laundry basket. Begin with pairs of socks of different colors and sizes. (Don't expect your preschooler to sort a pile of white athletic socks.) Spread the socks out on a large surface. Hold up one sock and search with your child to find its mate. Repeat ntil all the socks are matched.

What We're

A Note from Teachers earning... Can you believe it??? We have been in school for a month already. Time flies when you are LEARNING!!! Please continue to help your Baby with their homework nightly. Studies have shown that reading with your child for 20 minutes reaps great success. As your child reads to you, have them point to each word. This is a skill that many students struggle with in reading. Don't be afraid to have them read you the same story. Repeated reading helps build fluency. Thanks for helping your child! ©

Language Arts Students are working the skill of visualizing. They are learning to create pictures in their minds of what they have read to help them better understand the story.

Math We have moved on from counting and have begun our place value unit. Students are learning to represent numbers in tens ,Drld ones.

What's Happening in our Classroom

Our kindergarten students just finished unit one which included: colors, geometrical shapes and positions). We just started our second unit del curriculum "Common Core." Our kindergarten students will develop strategies to effectively count by ones and by tens all the way to 100. Our main objective of this unit is to answer the question: How can we show how many there are?

Our kindergarten students will learn to: • count up to 100 by ones and by tens • understand the relationship between the numbers and the amount that they represent • count and give the value of each object counted • understand that the last digit/number represents the amount that he/she has counted • understand that each subsequence number increases in value by one more number.

Science STEM Program In our Kindergarten and First Grade classes lead by Sra. Guzman and Sr. Flaquer, concluded our unit about living and non living things. Our students had the opportunity to classify different types of living and non living things and to practice all concepts in Spanish. They were able to connect these concepts with the next unit entitled -Change is Good, which is related to nature. This unit will have a special focus in the life cycle of the butterfly and the frog. We started with the life cycle of the butterfly in which they learn first hand how a caterpillar changed to a chrysalis and finally to a butterfly. Our students observed all these changes right inside the classroom! Various techniques, from teacher

guidance to student discussions and first hand observations of live butterflies in the classroom, were put in place in order for the students to understand this process. They acquired a great deal of understanding of how a tiny egg laid by a butterfly changed to a caterpillar, then to a chrysalis, to finally to a butterfly, all in Spanish!

Our students had the opportunity to manipulate materials such as plates, different types of pastas and leaves in order to represent their understanding of the lessons and recreate the life cycle of the butterfly. To finalize this lesson, the students freed the butterflies they took care of and saw developing in the classroom. They gathered in the school playground to free and say goodbye to the beautiful mariposas!

Presently, our students are learning and creating activities related to the life cycle of a -rana- frog. Students will be engaged deeply in the process in order to facilitate their understanding-and develop their Spanish language.

Segundo Grado/Second Grade STEM "Las Partes de la Planta"

In the last few weeks, our second graders in theSTEM/Spanish Dual Language begun studying the main parts of a plant. Students are experimenting first hand how a plants grow; they planted a seed which they will monitor and observe their growth and will record their observation in their own journals. Each student planted different seeds in different conditions (different types of dirt, and wet cotton) this way they will compare the growth and the needs of the plant (they will make connection with prior skills learned in the Living and non-living unit). This experimentation will activate their scientific curiosity, help them state hypothesis and state observations and conclusions.

NEWSLETTER

OCTOBER - CREATIVITY Using your imagination to do

something unique

Our time at school is limited, so we rely on your involvement to help us make the value come alive each month! That's why we are sending home 4 CORE Activities for you and your child to do in the car, at home, or in your community that will reinforce the big idea we are discussing here at school. C — "car time" will provide a link you can follow to download a song that reinforces the meaning of the value. 0 — "open wide" will be a few discussion starters for around the dinner table that will crack open what this month's value is all about. R — "rest" is an age-appropriate book that you can order on-line or check out at your local library to read at bedtime, or any time of the day. These books are guaranteed to reiterate this month's big idea and encourage great discus-sion with your child. E — "experience" is a creative suggestion for a family activity that will put this value into action. Thanks for your participation in building these inward attitudes into outward behaviors!

DISCUSSION STARTER:

Inga Swope is passionate about not only helping women

also educating American children about the poverty

that exists in other countries. Her organization, called

"3seams" creatively tackles both of those issues. Wom-

en in Haiti sew beautiful children's dresses in sets of two.

When an American woman buys a dress, the other dress

is donated to a child in an impoverished nation. Not only

does a child in need receive some much-needed cloth-

Dear Parents and Students:

We are so excited about the new playground coming to Capitol Heights ES. Over the past year we have raised over $15,000.00 towards the cost of the playground. Our students have taken great pride in the selection of the playground and the making of a video used to gain sponsorship. They also participated in several fundraisers to show their commitment to the project. We invite you to join us in our enthusiasm and picture that new playground in the school yard. We are at the final gate and need your help in raising the remaining $1,500.00. Can we count on you to make a small contribution towards this effort. We sincerely hope that you will join us as a Capitol Heights Elementary School Playground donor.

Please make your donation payable to CHES PTSA. A donation box will be placed in the front office the week of October 6th, 2014. If you have any questions or require additional information, contact us at 301-817-0494 or email us at [email protected],
