Principal’s Report We hope you have had a relaxing, wonderful summer holiday. As a staff we are very excited for the New Year and to welcome back our beautiful, talented students of Redhead Public School. We hope you are all recharged and ready to start a new school year. We would also like to welcome the many new families to Redhead Public School.

What a wonderful first day back for students with our Swimming Carnival. The weather was very kind and both Mr Thorsby and Mr Halbesma did an amazing job at organising a successful, engaging and family friendly carnival. We would like to thank the many families that came to support the students of Redhead Public School. We are all exceptionally proud of our students sportsmanship, determination and behaviours.

New Staff Each year brings positive change. This year we include a few new additions to our staff. We are delighted to welcome Miss Nagisa Dalby and Miss Lexi McInnes to Redhead Public School. Both ladies bring a wealth of education, knowledge and various experiences to our school. We are also excited to say Miss Dalby is a former student of Redhead Public School so an extra big welcome home to her.

Bushfire Out of Uniform Day – Tomorrow The bushfires have had a devastating impact across NSW. We will be holding an ‘Out of Uniform Day’ tomorrow to raise money to support the many families affected by the fires. All donations will go to the Australian Red Cross. Please send your child/children with a gold coin donation tomorrow. It will be collected from their classrooms.

Facilities Update If you drove past over the school holidays you would have seen the numerous maintenance and construction projects that have occurred.

Firstly, our new playground equipment has been installed. Sadly, this area will remain out of bounds until we can ensure the required level of soft fall is underneath. This is a Department of Education Work Health and Safety requirement. The play equipment cannot be used before school or after school.

We are especially pleased with the additional painting and new carpet that has occurred throughout many classrooms and the administration block.

To accommodate students and staff, we have had an upgrade of our school kitchen facilities. This will be used as an additional teaching room for students to cook or complete experiments in.

Finally, there has been some delays with our Sensory Playground. This will commence shortly. The Men’s Shed have constructed the mud kitchen and it is ready to install. The teepees are under construction and the ARIX building team will complete an onsite inspection before donating their time and resources to build us a stage, pebble creek bed and cement slab ready for a shed to keep all the imaginative play items. We cannot wait to see this new and exciting play space take shape.

Student Class Placement A great deal of time, effort and thought has gone into the process of student placements for the 2020 school year. Children will be placed in their 2020 classes tomorrow – Friday 31st January.

Careful consideration was given to input from staff and families as well as student learning styles. Classrooms have been balanced academically and socially. Our class lists are structured to provide equitable class sizes at each grade level. Moving students is difficult without causing imbalances and inequities.

Thank you so much for being positive with your child and helping him or her understand that it is impossible to place all students with a preferred best friend or teacher. Our staff works hard to make school a positive experience for all students.

Our classroom organisation for 2020 will be:

KB – Mrs Lisa Budden KT – Mrs Angella Thomas 1/2S – Mrs Donna Schofield/Mrs Catherine Rufford 1M – Miss Lexi McInnes 2/3O – Miss Melissa O’Donnell 2N – Mrs Nicole Lapornik/Miss Nagi Dalby 3/4K – Mrs Amy Kurtz/Miss Samantha Vaughan 3/4S – Mrs Aleisha Sturgeon 4/5H – Mr Malcolm Halbesma 5/6C – Mrs Lynne Church 5/6T – Mr Eric Thorsby Learning and Support Team Mrs Jan Audet (4 days) Mrs Nagi Dalby RFF Technology Miss Samantha Vaughan Library Mrs Laura Rhodes

Attendance – EVERY DAY COUNTS Going to school every day is the single most important part of your child’s education. Students learn new things at school every day – missing school puts them behind.

A reminder about attendance - we are asking parents and carers to please ensure that their child is attending school regularly. We monitor attendance closely as per the NSW DoE policy. Teachers are instructed to phone home if an absence is unexplained after two days and they must record the act of phoning or contacting the parent/carer. Lateness and absence can have a significant impact on learning and some of our most important learning experiences happen at the beginning of the day. In

the event your child is sick can you please contact the school to let us know or reply to the SMS that will be sent on the day.

If your child needs to have an appointment, please try to make your appointment after the lunch break from 2:10pm.

Classroom Enhancement Packs You can now purchase your ‘classroom enhancement’ pack. Setting up our classrooms as quality learning environments, with efficient access to technology and contemporary teaching resources is vital in ensuring that our students achieve the outcomes set for them. In order to ensure quality teaching it is important that we set a ‘classroom enhancement’ pack for our school.

Our Classroom Enhancement pack is set at:

1 child $60.00

2 children $120.00

3 or more children $170

Included in each enhancement pack will be all text books, online subscriptions, student whiteboards, exercise books, display folders, pens, pencils, coloured pencils, scissors, glue sticks, ruler, rubber, sharpener, art supplies, whiteboard markers and duster. All parents/carers will need to do is supply a pencil case.

Classroom enhancement packs can now be paid for at the office or online by visiting https://redheadp.schools.nsw.gov.au/. This year all packs will remain with teachers and stationery will be distributed throughout the year as required.

Parent Concerns If you have any concerns regarding your child’s educational, emotional or social wellbeing please contact our school to organise a meeting with your child’s classroom teacher. Most concerns should be resolved at the local level by the classroom teacher. The teacher will make a record of your concerns and report your meeting and any outcomes to the stage Assistant Principal and the school Principal.

If your concerns are not resolved by the classroom teacher. Please organise a meeting with the Stage Assistant Principal to help you and the teacher resolve any concerns.

Our Assistant Principals are:

Early Stage 1 (Kindergarten) and Stage 1 (Year 1 and Year 2) – Mrs Schofield

Stage 2 (Year 3 and Year 4) – Mrs Sturgeon

Stage 3 (Year 5 and Year 6) - Mrs Church

Student Enrichment – Mrs Amy Kurtz

Lastly, if you can't resolve your concerns after speaking to your child's teacher or Stage Assistant Principal please come and raise your continued concerns with the school Principal. Please phone the school office to arrange a meeting if this is required.

School Hours Teacher supervision hours before school are from 8:40am to 9:10am and afternoons from 3:10pm to 3:20pm. Parents will need to organise before and after school care if they require additional support outside these times. Currently the Victory OOSH and Fair Play OOSH are providing this facility to families at Redhead Public School.

OOSH At the end of last year Mrs Kurtz completed the first stages in the Department of Education processes to try and get an onsite OOSH at Redhead Public School. We are currently still in negotiation and completing departmental paperwork and as soon as we have any information we will let the community know.

NEW Digital Device Policy The new policy includes the digital device restriction for primary schools announced by the NSW Government in December 2018. From the start of Term 1 2020:

Primary schools will restrict the use of digital devices, including mobile phones during school hours. Primary-aged students will not be allowed to use digital technology during class time, recess and lunch unless for an educational purpose or where a student needs it for other reasons, such as an adjustment for disability.

Our school will update our existing school procedure or develop a new one during 2020 to reflect the new policy requirements in consultation with our community.

Student Asthma Plans and Anaphylaxis Plans If you child’s medical requirements have changed or you have a new Asthma or Anaphylaxis plan, could you please ensure all information is updated ASAP to ensure the safety or your child and abide by the Department of Education Work Health and Safety requirements.

I eagerly look forward to seeing all students and families again. It remains an honour and privilege to be your forever principal. Please stop by and say hello. Together, I know we will make this school year one of growth and achievement for all children.
