Dear Parents, Dear Parents, Welcome back to a year that will be an important one for all of us. Last year we had met many of our targets but this year we have to make much bigger improvements in all our verticals. So here we begin: 1) Let’s start with improvement of Infrastructure and other Facilities: a) PRIMARY BLOCK – i) A complete facelift of the Primary block was carried out with special emphasis on the Dance, Art & Music rooms. ii) New furniture for students has been purchased for the Music and Art rooms and the ICT Lab. iii) Work on the Organic farm near the PYP block has been completed and our PYP students will start work on the farm soon. iv) All class rooms of the Primary block have been provided with fresh curtains. b) SECONDARY BLOCK – i) Rooms for the Culinary Club and the PE Department have been made available in the Secondary block. ii) All laboratories in the Secondary block have been replaced with new Student chairs c) BOARDING HOUSE – 1. All dormitories were provided with new sets of bed linen, window curtains and pillows. 2. A few AC units were purchased for the Boys Hostel. Principals Newsletter August 2017

1. AnewbuswasprocuredtoreplacetheoldbusonRouteNo.08.

2. Heightened security measures have been implemented including random securityassessmentstowardsensuringoftightersecuritysystemsonthecampus.

8) Dr.VamshitaReddywhoisarenowneddentistspoketothestudentsaboutoraldiseasesandoralhealthcareon30thAugust.Shealsoshowedandguidedthestudentsontherightwaytobrushtheirteeth.

9) ThePYPgoalsettingweekwasheldfrom22ndto24thAugust.Studentsdiscussedthegoals that they have set for the academic year with their parents. Parents wereimpressed by the clear understanding of goal-setting that the students had andencouragedthestudentstoensuretheystucktotheirgoal.Theaimofthisexercisewastoinculcatethehabitsofbeinggoalorientedandcommittedtoaself-directedtask.

4)IGCSE:

a) Theacademicsessionfor2017-18commencedonthe31stofJulywithGrade9studentsentering the IGCSEProgrammewitha lotof enthusiasmandexpectations.The IGCSECoordinatorconductedtheintroductoryorientationforsubjectselectiononthe2ndofAugust.Theteachersdeliveredindividualsubjectpresentationswithregardtothescopeoftheirsubjectforcareerchoices.

Congratulationstothestudentsandtheirfamilies!

i) 100%studentsreceivedICEascomparedto86%lastyear.ii) 44%ofstudentssecuredDistinctionascomparedto33%lastyear.

Theresultstellusthatthoughwehaveimprovedabitinafewareas,westillhavealottoachieve.Weareworkingfromnowitselftoensureforourstudentsagreatly-improvedresult.

5)IBDP:

TherevisedIBDiplomaProgrammeresultsofour6thbatchof41studentsweredeclared.Therehasbeenaremarkableimprovementintheperformanceofstudentsthisyear.Thehighlightsoftheresultsareasfollows:i) 82%ofourstudentshavesecured the IBDiplomathisyear, thehighest in the last6

years.ii) TheIBDPSchoolaveragehasincreasedfrom29.4in2016to31.5thisyear.iii) MinJaeKim&AshdeepKaurBaggawereourtopscorerswith39points.NehaRana

Pingilisecured38points.(In2016,ourhighestscorewas36.)iv) 48%ofthegradesscoredbythestudentsareatleast5(outof7).Itwas35%in2016.v) 35+scoreshave increased from12% in2016 to32%thisyearand30+scoreshave

increasedfrom44%to59%.We congratulate our students, parents and teachers for this performance.We often getstudentsfromdiverseacademicbackgrounds(i.e.amongnon-IBcurricula)withvariationsinproficienciesinthedifferentsubjects.Yetwehaveacceptedtoworkwithallforitisourdeepbelief that there ispotential in every student andwe respect a student’sdesire toimprovehimselforherself.Keepingthatinmind,wearepleasedwiththeprogressmade.Wearehappyfornowbutbynomeanssatisfied.Wehavemilestogo–andwewill.Nextyear,wepromiseasignificantlybetterresult.

ii) Saturday Support for term boarders: To increase the academic rigour in termboardersSaturdayacademicsupportforgradeVItoXisplannedfortermboardersontwoworkingSaturdaysandonenon-workingSaturday.ThismonthboardersattendedSaturday support on 12 August. Saturday support on 19 Augwas cancelled due toINSIGNIAcelebrations.

iii) Notebookchecking:Regularnotebookcheckingofboardersisbeingcarriedoutby

Houseparentsintheboardingandanyproblemsarepromptlybroughttothenoticeofthe teacher / Coordinator by email. House parents will check all notebooks of allboardersatleastonceamonth.

b) Weekendactivities:

i) Movie (06 Aug, Sunday): Okja, an inspirational movie, about a young Korean girl’s

determinationandgrit to rescueherbest friendOkja (a geneticallymodifiedanimal)from the cluthches of a large multinational food processing group was shown toboarders.

ii) Boarders Night (10 Aug, Thursday): An ice breaking event was organised for the

boarders.ThePrincipal,Col.SathyaRao,VicePrincipal&allcampusstaffattendedtheevent.TheeventstartedwiththePrincipal’swelcomeaddresstoalltheboardersandabrief introduction by boarders who joined the Indus boarding this year. The girlsperformedIndianclassicalgroupdancefollowedbyKoreandancebyIGCSEandIBgirls.NishantAgrawalofGradeVIIplayedtwoEnglishsongsonthekeyboard.AftertheeventstheboardershadajamsessionwheretheyenjoyeddancingtothelatestEnglishsongs.Aspecialdinnerwasorganisedforall.

iii) Saha’sAdventureParktrip(25Aug,Friday):ThetermboardersweretakentoSaha

Adventure park situated in Ramoji film city. The boarders had early breakfast in theschoolandthegroupalongwiththeboardingteamlefttheschoolat0800h.AdventureandTeam-buildingactivitiesfortheboardersandthestaffwereplannedforthefullday:HighRopeCourselevel-1,NetCourse,BungeeEjection,ATVrides,Meltdown,IndianArchery,SandVolleyball,FundamentalChallengeGames,Zipliner,andOff-roadcycling.

Webelievethatallourchildrendeserveanengagingandroundededucationthatsupports

academicachievement,butalsodevelopstheskills,knowledgeandqualitiesneededtoflourish in life, learning and work. And keeping that in mind we will provide ourstudentswithnumerousopportunities invarious settings (online,outside, athome,volunteering,throughwork)andengagethewidercommunityinlearning.

experiencetheimportanceoffitnessforthebody.ThesessionwasfollowedbyatalkbyMsFarida.

b) IndependenceDay: India’s71st IndependenceDaywas celebratedon the15thof

August.TheeventcommencedwiththeWelcomeaddressfollowedbythehoistingofboth the Indian and Korean national flags. (The day coincides with the KoreanIndependence Day.) Then, the national anthems of both countries were sung withpride.Therewerespeechesbystudentsfrombothcountries;PYPstudentsperformedtraditionaldance.ThesewerefollowedbyafolkdancebytheMSPstudents.TheInduschoirthengaveasoul-stirringrenditionofoneofIndia’smostfamouspatrioticsongs,VandeMataram.

Viswa Kalidindi and Tanmaya Ramprasad of Grade 11 gave TED-like talks ondiscrimationfacedbypeopleofdifferentculturesandongenderequality,respectively.Theyrousedtheaudiencewiththeirpassionateandthought-provokingspeechesandgaveeveryonesomethingtothinkabout.

c) PlantationDrive:On15thAugust2017,studentsofGrade11and12participatedina

plantationdrive,where150saplingswereplantedinKondakalThanda,anearbyvillage.ThisplantationdrivewasbegunasaschoolCASinitiativeandaimedatencouragingagreenerenvironmentinthesurroundingvillageswhilealsospreadingawarenessabouttheimportanceofconservingtreesandthebeneficialroletheyplayinourlives.Aspartoftheschool’sIndependenceDaycelebrations,thestudentsoftheIBDPprogramsuccessfullyplantedaround150fruittrees,includingguava,pomegranate,lemonandcustard apple saplings. Through this initiative, students not only learnt about theimportance of Nature themselves, butwere also able to spread thismessage to thenearby village and strengthen their understandingof community through this act ofservice.

d) Insignia:

Insignia,acharityfeteorganizedbystudentsandteachersofInduswasheldsuccessfullyon19thAugust2017.Thefestivalbeganat12noonandthefun-filledeventwentontill6:00 pm. i)ThecommunityprojectforMYPforthisyearistoimpartbasicreadingandwritingskillstothestudentsofKondakalPrimarySchool.StudentsofGrades6,7&8studentsprepareactivitiesduringschoolhoursandconductitforGrades3,4&5studentsofKondakalSchoolrespectively.Theystayedbackonce inaweekafterschool for thiscommunityproject.

Grade8studentsofIISHimpartbasicreadingandwritingskillstothestudentsofKondakal

PrimarySchool.

ii)OrganDonationDay-AspecialassemblywasconductedbyGrade7studentson14thAugusttosensitizeMYPstudentsabouttheimportanceofdonatingvitalorganswhenadvisedbyadoctor.Itwasaninteractivesessionwhereinthestudentsunderstoodthathowlivesaresavedthroughthisactofselflessness.Theytookapledgeforthesame.

All activities were unique and designed to build team spirit wherein the studentsengagedthemselvesinstrategizing,planningandexecutingincombat-likesituations,tosimulate individual and group dynamics in a stressful environment. They helpedstudents to understand the distinctiveness of planning, be a team-player, crisismanagement, optimum utilization of resources, to overcome fear and learn abouttrustingoneself.

All the students constantly reflected on all the activities and their learning aspects.Reflections were shown to the trainers and collective feedback was given by all thetrainers.

Wehavea10-studentPopMusicEnsembleand25-studentIndianmusicEnsembleandoneforThaistudents.Eachgrouphasstartedpractisingatleastonesongeach.

18-20studentshaveregisteredforthepreparationofTrinityExam.Studentswhohavealreadyregisteredformusicexamsi.e.theTrinityCollegeandABRSM(AssociatedBoardofRoyalSchoolofMusicLondon)examinationswillbepreparedusingexambooks.TheDepartmentistrainingandpreparingthemforthem.

StudentshavealreadystartedpractisingfortheInter-housemusiccompetition,BattleofBands.Housemastershavesharedatentativelistoftheparticipants.

Thespecialinstrumentalprogrammeopentothewholeschoolhasbeeninitiatedbysendingaformtobefilledupbytheparentsinterestedintheprogram.Sofararound30studentshavesigned up for the program and the classes have started from thisweek. The classeswill beconductedduringthezeroperiods,after-schoolstaybacksandtwoSaturdays.Asharedstudenttrackerdocumentisbeingmaintainedforeverystudenttoenableatwo-waycommunicationbetweentheteachersandparents.
