School Mental Health Support Initiative I have been informed that the school will be receiving funding to employ a further 0.5 Mental Health Support worker with the intention to work alongside our current Wellbeing Team to provide further support for the Oberon High School students. This funding is part of the Victorian State Governments Mental Health Practitioners (MHP) initiative and will begin in Term 4. Years 7 & 8 Student Led Conferences Thank you to all the parents that attended the Digital Portfolio Student Led Conferences. From the reports I received, there was wonderful engagement between all the parents and their children. The students had worked hard to showcase all their work into one presentation. A special thank you to Ms Barnett for her hard work around the organisation of the conferences. These conferences are not designed to replace the Student/Parent/Teacher Conferences that are held in Terms 2 and 4. Mittagundi Leadership Camp Last week saw twenty of our Year 10 students attend a leadership camp at Mittagundi Outdoor Education centre. Thanks to Mr Burgess & Miss Cole for giving up their week so the camp could be such a success. 2019 Indonesia Language Tour This weekend sees us farewell ten students and two staff on the twelve day Indonesian language study tour. Students will travel to Yogyakarta where they will need to apply their language skills to navigate their way around, transport, restaurants, markets and much more. We look forward to hearing about their travels on their return. Armstrong Creek Update Work continues to progress as expected at the Armstrong Creek site. Kane Construction is in the process of preparing for the pouring of the concrete slabs on the two largest buildings, these being the PAPE (Performing Arts, Physical Education) and DATS (Design, Arts, Technology and Science). The preliminary ground works for the other buildings continues as well as drainage groundworks for the remainder of the site. The second of our Oberon High School Relocation committee meetings took place on Tuesday 3 rd September. The committee continue to work towards putting in place plans to achieve the various milestones that have been identified. We have included on the committee representatives from Public Transport Victoria, the Department of Education School Bussing Unit and the City of Greater Geelong to discuss and plan for issues that are being identified. As previously mentioned in the letter sent home this week to the school community, the Minister of Education has confirmed that Oberon High School will retaining its name when we relocate to Armstrong Creek for the beginning of the 2021 school year. School Dental Health Van The school has been informed that we will be part of the initial roll out of the State Government initiative that will be providing Dental Health checks for students. The program will provide free annual check-ups and treatment including teeth cleaning, fluoride applications, fillings and any other non-cosmetic, follow-up treatments to make sure our students have healthy teeth. I will provide more information to the school community as I receive this. VCE IMPORTANT DATES

Intentions for 2020 If students are not returning to Oberon High School in 2020, can families please contact the school and speak with one of the Assistant Principals to confirm this.

We are in the process of planning classes and staffing for the 2020 school year and movements of students can significantly affect this planning. End of Term 3 The last day of term is Friday 20th September. We will be finishing at 2.30pm. All buses have been notified of the early finish. Tim McMahon

DET – Student Leadership On Sunday 8th September five students will fly out to Yogyakarta in Indonesia as part of the DET and Victorian State Governments ‘Victorian Young Leaders to Indonesia Program’. The group will return on the 20th October. This is the first time that this experience has been offered to students to travel to Indonesia. We will have one staff member Mr Barnes accompanying the group. 2019 NAPLAN Results The 2019 NAPLAN results have been released to school this week. We are currently analysing our results in more detail however, in summary the learning growth that our students have achieved (on average) from their Year 7 to Year 9 results is markedly higher than what is being achieved by other schools across the state. This is pleasing given that a goal we set as part of our Annual Improvement Plan is to improve all students, no matter what their ability level, at a faster rate than the state average.

I, as many of you would have heard in the media, that the results at the Year 9 level in 2019 were lower than previous years in Victoria. The analysis of our results across all of the literacy and numeracy testing domains doesn’t reflect that trend. We have sent home the NAPLAN results with students today, if you haven’t received these contact the school and we will provide you with a copy. Year 12 Student Scholarships A range of scholarships are being offered and promoted by the Department of Education for Year 12 students finishing school at the end of 2019 and taking up further study in 2020. Interested students and parents can access information about these scholarships, including specific criteria, through the link below. Applications are now open and will close on the 31st January, 2020. https://www.eduweb.vic.gov.au/scholarships/list.aspx?YearID=13 School For Student Leadership 2020 – China We have been informed that the school has been allocated six places for Year 9 students 2020 to attend the DET School for Student Leadership. Our students have been allocated Term 4.

As part of this placement, three boys and three girls will be involved in an international expedition of six weeks in China, based at Utahloy International School as part of the Victorian Young Leaders to China Program. We expect there will be significant interest from our current Year 8 students to be allocated a place, consequently we will hold an information session, outlining the trip and selection process during Term 4.

This will be the second time we are able to offer this opportunity to our students, with six of our year students heading to China in Term 4 this year.

Uniting Barwon has access to limited funds to provide

assistance for families who may need extra support with the

financial cost of books (including the cost of the digital

books subscription to Education Perfect) and uniforms for

2020. Families need to have a current Health Care Card to

be eligible for support. As part of the process Uniting

Barwon require a family member to attend an interview

to help determine the needs and support that the family

require.

Unfortunately the funds do not enable them to assist all

families with a Centrelink benefit card, thus it is important to

get in early. Please contact Uniting Barwon between

9.00am and 12.00pm on 42 101 100, from October 14th to

arrange an interview as soon as possible. Interviews will be

conducted from October 29th

and then on every Tuesday

and Thursday until the end of November 2019.

If you have further questions or queries regarding this pro-

cess, please feel free to contact myself at Oberon High

School on 52 43 4444.

Year 10 Students off to Indonesia! On Sunday, ten Year 10 Indonesian students will take off to Yogyakarta, Central Java, for the Year 10 Indonesian Trip with Bu Maher and Bu Tyson-Whittaker. Over the next 2 weeks they will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in cultural activities like self defence, batik, dancing, catching local transport and sampling great local food. We look forward to them using their Indonesian language in the market places and streets as they meet up with our Sister School, SMA Muhammadiyah 1 and engage with the locals in Yogya. Look forward to hearing about our adventures when we return! Selamat jalan!

On Monday August 12 the staff at Oberon High School had a day to engage in professional learning. The focus of the day was “Fostering a Culture of Feedback”.

The day was designed to allow staff to learn from each other by seeing and sharing best practice. Work-shops run by staff members focussed on student to teacher feedback, students giving feedback to each other and staff tracking progress and growth of students with greater accuracy. These sessions were expertly planned and delivered by Oberon teachers with all staff members taking part in the work-shops.

Staff spent a large portion of the day working in teams to plan ways of implementing the strategies that they had engaged with earlier in the day.

Principal Tim McMahon led the final session of the day where staff explored the elements of the “Oberon Way” and considered ways of fostering and maintaining the great culture of the school as we look towards relocating in 2021.

It was a fantastic day with all staff members working extremely hard to ensure the continued growth of Oberon students.

Ford Driving Skills for Life Hands-on Courses Ford Driving Skills for Life (DSFL) free hands-on driving clinics

help newly licensed drivers (those with a learner, provisional, or full license) improve their skills in four key areas that are critical factors in more than 60 per cent of vehicle crashes, including:

Hazard Recognition, Vehicle Handling, Speed and Space Management. There also is a comprehensive section on Distracted and Impaired Driving.

This half-day course is intended for newly licensed drivers to practice these skills in a controlled environment, with guidance by professional instructors from Driving Solutions. This clinic is the next step beyond standard

driver education and a valuable next step in the learning process.

In order to attend a Ford DSFL hands-on clinic, participants must provide full name, age, email address, phone number and details of their Learner License (with at least 40 hours in logbook), Provisional Driver License or Driv-er License. The program is free and Ford vehicles will be provided to use during the event. Participants will be se-

lected on a first in first served basis. Selection of attendees is final and negotiation will not be entered into. Parents and guardians are strongly encouraged to attend the clinic and learn alongside participants. There will

also be an informative safety session for parents and guardians.

Young drivers can now sign up to the Geelong and Melbourne events at the Ford website here: https://www.forddsfl.com.au/
