2017 NUMBER 2 Principal’s Message Welcome to this edition of flASHeS. There is no time in the school year when things slow down so I would like to firstly commend our staff both teaching and non-teaching for the broad range of opportunities that they continue to provide for students with so many people providing for a lot of opportunities, which is another benefit of being part of a big school. In this edition you will see just some of the great activities that our students have been a part of and we are always very proud of the way in which our student conduct themselves in all forums. Our Work Place Learning program exposes students to business and industry experience in the areas that interest them as possibilities for their future employment. The work undertaken by Fiona Blackmore in encouraging employers to join us in giving our youth exposure to the market place and employers confidence in what our youth can bring to their business or industry area. Matching the student to the employer is a skill that Fiona demonstrates on a regular basis and we would encourage any employer that is not part of this program to consider taking on a WPL student. Work placements are often a great way for students to move into apprenticeships and traineeships as employers get the chance to see them in action. Our Jazz Specialist students have recently returned from Port Macquarie in NSW where Andrew Mackay-Sim and Sally Dean accompanied the group for The Big Band Blast Festival. This is an innovative national jazz festival in Australia; it has patrons that include James and John Morrison. The students competed in a national festival, of which approximately 50 bands will participate. In addition, the students and band directors participated in workshops led by some of Australia’s best musicians. They also attended performances by top Australian musicians and participated in performances with their peers and others in the other events throughout the festival. This event is an exceptional motivational experience for our musicians and also provides links formed by our participation in previous years resulted in the recent workshops by John Morrison at Australind. The students in the ASHS Big Band have been rehearsing with a high level of motivation, knowing that they will performing in a competitive atmosphere in front of a large audience. This event makes personal and group band practice very motivating and makes the study relevant and purposeful for students and their families. Experiences such as this tour are a significant and worthwhile means of achieving these goals and enhancing the personal growth and values of our young students. Our Jazz Band was the only Western Australian group to attend and were acknowledged for the exemplary manner in which they presented as ASHS students. They are certainly great role models and great ambassador for the school. Open Day: Semester 1 Reporting to Parents will be available for collection at our Open Day scheduled for Thursday 22nd June from 11:00 am – 6:00 pm. Parents are invited to join us at the school when they pick-up their child’s report, to take a tour of the school, meet their child’s teachers and enjoy the atmosphere of the school. Everyone is welcome so we hope to see you there. The Leschenault Alliance of Public Schools (LAPS) is the partnership that has been forged with our primary schools that fall within our school catchment area to ensure that we can provide more seamless opportunities for all of the students that we share. We are currently involved in a number of joint activities including a Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) partnership with Treendale PS, Science Enrichment and Extension in Leschenault (SEEL) that will include selected students form each primary school working with our specialist science staff, and our up and coming visits to each school to talk 2018 transition into Year 7. For Australind SHS this partnership forms an important partnership and is aligned to our Business Plan priorities. As such we will endeavour to continue to evolve our partnerships with more collegiate activities as we move towards 2018. In closing I would like to wish all of our Country Week participants, coaches and staff a great week where students will demonstrate our competitive edge along with exemplary sportsmanship. Reminders: Term 3 – Students Commence on Wednesday 19th July as all staff will be involved in school development activities on the Monday and the Tuesday of that week.

New Art Installation for the Library

We have been fortunate to have some great colourful murals added to our library wall, thanks to the 2016 Year 12 Art Students. We discussed the brief, and decided on welcoming students to the library, through inclusivity & diversity. Each student created a panel, and a cherry picker was needed to install the art over the summer holidays. This is a work in progress, with more panels to be added to complete the revitalising of what was a very boring wall. Thank you so much to Ms Woolhouse and the students who participated.

2017 Australian of the Year Visit

Emeritus Professor Alan Mackay-Sim

On Friday 5 May, Australind Senior High School staff and students were honoured with a visit from 2017 Australian of the Year, Emeritus Professor Alan Mackay-Sim. Our equally talented head of Jazz Music, Mr Andrew Mackay-Sim, used his family connections to secure his brother Alan for a guest lecture outlining his life’s work in biomedical research and passion for stem cell research, which has led to ground breaking advances in the world of spinal cord injuries. Professor Mackay-Sim is a global authority on the human sense of smell and the biology of nasal cells and led the world’s first clinical trial using these cells in spinal cord injury. In 2014, his research helped play a central role in the world’s first successful restoration of mobility in a quadriplegic man – a break-through described as the scientific equivalent to the moon landing. Our students were greatly inspired by the warm and gregarious nature of Professor Mackay-Sim and we will continue to follow his remarkable work in the years to come.

WAAPA Jazz Workshops

In these workshops, the students met and worked with highly acclaimed professional musicians and teachers, learned new skills in improvisation, rhythm, music from other cultures and blew the guests away with their enthusiasm to play as a group and to improvise as part of the group. Both visiting groups were impressed by the students’ behaviour and their willingness to join in and get as much as they could out of the workshops.

A Very Big Experience had by 11’s and 12’s

Work Experience Year 12— March

100 PLACEMENTS

Work Experience Year 11— May

130 PLACEMENTS

What an amazing and busy start to the year it has been. Both Year 11 and Year 12 students have been out on two weeks work experience, and many positive relationships have been created. The year 12 students have been a great group from the outset, being generally positive, communicative and all-round wonderful people. The year 12 students went out in Term 1 and received comments such as, “the best student”, “a fine young person”, “great work ethic”. It makes the future so bright when our students make employers realise how much our boys and girls have to offer to the working world. I am so proud of how they have conducted and represented themselves, their families and their school. So, well done to all Year 12 students who participated. One more placement to go before you graduate. Make the most of your opportunities and start to build the network that will help you in your chosen pathway in life.

And now to the Year 11 students… what can be said about them? They had a large and very successful group to follow. The Year 12 students have been amazing and the Year 11 students have stepped up. The biggest group to engage, induct and place and we all did it. 130 placements and mostly going well. Without the support of the many local employers this program would not be as successful as it is. As a school, we place the largest number of students in the area. Over the years, the commitment of our staff, the quality of teaching and the calibre of our students has meant that employers are becoming more than happy to accept ASHS students for placement. Keep it up. Grow, develop, learn and enjoy the next 18 months as you forge the pathway to your future. Each time you embark on a new challenge you grow and become better equipped for the next transition in to the workplace.

Antarctic Competition The Year 7 MAPS class is entering a once in a lifetime chance to be the first 6 children to set foot on Antarctica’s cold snow. The Australian Government has organised a competition to name our new ice breaker that will be replacing the old ice breaker ‘Aurora Australis ‘. The competition is open to Australian students from years 5 to 8. The name our icebreaker competition is design to engage us in Australia’s Antarctic program and teach us about Antarctica’s climate, history and Australia’s role in the research of Antarctica. The prize that goes to the winners are: flights to and from Hobart, transport, accommodation and some meals in Hobart, Antarctic clothing and medical screening, round the trip flight to and from Wilkins Aerodrome including an on-ground Antarctic experience. The top four runner ups will also receive a technology voucher to the value of $500. So good luck to our Year 7 MAPS class. We hope we win this!

NAPLAN Report

NAPLAN wasn’t the best week for a lot of us. For some of us, it was a breeze; others, not so much. It had its ups and downs but after all, it was only three days. The writing topic surprised some but it was a good topic to write about. In our changing world there’s not really a better topic to write about than, ‘What we can’t waste’. The maths was challenging but we pulled through and the literacy was different and interesting. Overall it gave us a few lessons and maybe a few chaotic weeks for preparation. Good job everyone!

‘Mr Stink’

On the 3rd of May we went to an amazing play, Mr Stink. The performance was based on the book by

David Walliams. The day started off normally but at the start of period 2 we went to the Egret Wing.

From there on, we ate an early lunch 1 and then we got into groups. Then we got on the bus and went

into Bunbury for the performance.

When we got to the BREC, we went inside and waited for a

few minutes before we went into the theatre. We watched

the play and it was amazing!

Then we went on the bus and went back to school.

Everyone had a magnificent time and we all enjoyed it

thoroughly. By Isabella Ferrari and Kendal Edwards

YEAR 7

Connection to Country

On the 3rd of March 2017 we went on the country walk which was led by Troy Bennell. We got to see how Aboriginal people lived and we learned about the four tribes which were the estuary, river, ocean and hill people. We had paint on our foreheads to represent what tribe we were in. This was an awesome experience for all of us year sevens to learn about Aboriginal culture, what their life was like and what they did for fun as kids. It was definitely a great day for everyone that participated in this event. I would like to do this again and also give my thanks to everyone who made this day a reality.

By Katie Santostefano

Whilst on the nature walk we learnt a lot about Aboriginal culture and got to experience the river and the oval near the police office where Troy Bennell’s ancestors lived and adapted to their surroundings. At the school we were split up into groups: the river, the ocean, the hills and the estuary people. All of the different groups had paint that were different colours and depending on if you were a boy or a girl you would have to put three dots on your face if you were a girl and if you were a boy you smudged it all over your face. By Montana Gee

On the 3rd of March Troy Bennell came to our school to talk about Australind’s indigenous history. After a talk about culture and an explanation of the colours of our face paint we went for a walk around Australind. On our walk Troy shared some stories about his family’s history and the local area. Once we had finished our walk we all had a sausage sizzle and Troy Bennell played the didgeridoo for us. This was certainly a cultural experienced enjoyed by many of our 2017 year sevens. By Evelyn Price

World Jaguar Maths in Motion

Australind SHS have been invited to the World Jaguar Maths in Motion finals in the U.K. to be held on 21 June. Cameron Kelly (Year 7) and Broden Pollard (Year 8) created a heat winning car and this has opened a new era in the use of their mathematics skills. The boys managed to complete a lap time that will see them now heading to the British Motor Museum in Gaydon, Warwickshire in the UK to compete in the World Final.

Maths Assistance Day

The Maths’ teachers of the Year 11 and 12 Mathematic Courses will be available on Monday 26 June and Wednesday 28 June, in the following time slots. The time slots match when the students have their usual class. Students who are not attending Country Week have an opportunity to access assistance from their class teacher with their content work, assignments or general consolidation of concepts being learnt. The location of the catch-up classes will be in M7, and students will be required to sign up during normal classes prior to the week.

Year 11 Modern History Excursion 17 May 2017

On Wednesday the 17 of May 2017, the Year 11 ATAR History students went to Bunbury Cathedral Grammar to hear a talk “The Who of the Holocaust” presented by Ephraim Kaye, a Director from the International School for Holocaust Studies at Yad Vashem Jerusalem, Israel. The talk was divided into the perpetrators, bystanders and victims and looked at the experiences of each group and their role in the Holocaust. Along with Year 10 and 11 students from Bunbury Senior High School and Bunbury Cathedral Grammar, the Year 11 students were a credit to ASHS volunteering their ideas and actively engaging in the discussions. A highly engaging presentation which gave the students plenty of food for thought before they start their next Modern History unit Nazism in Germany 1918 – 1945.

Yes We Can

Year 12 ATAR English students have proven that they do “Give a Damn”. The call went out to all three Year 12 ATAR English classes to “Give a Damn, Give a Can” with the winning class receiving chocolate for their effort. A whopping 221 cans were donated in the space of four days. What an incredible effort and one their teachers are very proud of!!

Multi-sports Day

On the 4th April we went to the Multi-sports day at Hands Park oval in Bunbury. I was in the pink group with the other schools from different colours. We played different kinds of games, including soccer, golf, football, bocce, cricket, basketball, Nerf guns, netball and exercise. I had a go at lots of different sports. At lunch we had a sausage sizzle before we played more games then we all gathered together to get a ribbon and a group photograph. Mrs Myles and other Flat students went to the Multi-sports day too. My favourite sports are football and bocce because it was fun and great. Yes, I want to go to the Multi-sports day because I like it a lot. It was a great way to play some games in the sun. Sports Carnival

On Thursday the 6 of April 2017, all the Year 7 and 8’s went out to the oval to compete in the sports carnival. It was a day of running, throwing, climbing and jumping. It was a spectacular day. Everyone joined in. The EXCEL students helped out and it made the day so much better. Not only did we compete but we had fun. There was a rock climbing wall and bungee jumping.

World Challenge Training Camp World Challenge preparation is well underway as our eleven Year 10 and Year 11 challengers have begun to practise camping for our expedition to Sri Lanka in December. As a group, we have pitched tents and camped overnight, walked a 14km section of Cape to Cape in Yallingup with 15kg of rucksack weight on our backs, and have eaten four meals on a budget of $10 per person. Our training camp on the 2nd and 3rd of May saw our challengers take the lead and achieve success in the many aspects of camping which included navigating during our hike, setting up tents, and cooking all meals, much to Mr Irving’s and Miss Presutto’s delight! On the 16th of June, our challengers will take on another training camp; this time, preparing for a two-night stay, and covering more of the Cape to Cape track. Well done, to our challengers on their thus far successful preparation for Sri Lanka.

Certificate II Outdoor Recreation Snorkelling

The Year 11 and Year 12 Certificate II Outdoor Recreation classes participated in weekly snorkelling lessons throughout term 1. Students learned to enter and exit the water correctly while wearing fins, clear their masks and snorkels, duck dive and perform rescues. They also kept a log book of the marine life they encountered on each of their weekly lessons. The unit of work culminated in a one day snorkelling excursion to the Busselton jetty. By demonstrating the required skills students achieved competency in the SISOSNK201A Demonstrate Snorkelling Activities unit as part of their Certificate course.

Your permission will be sought prior to your child having any treatment undertaken by one of these students. Students must have demonstrated a high level of clinical competence, appropriate to the procedure to be undertaken, before they can undertake patient care. These students will work under the direction of qualified dental professionals, in this clinic, to continue to provide high quality dental care to your children. Please feel free to discuss any concerns with our clinic staff. Thank you for being supportive of our student placement programme. Australind Senior High School is raising funds. Here's how you can help...

World Challenge provides educational school expeditions that inspire students to take on the world! Our school trips expand minds outside the classroom. Our trip this year to Sri Lanka, will leave on the 2 December and will take on three weeks of trekking, community work and a bit of rest and relaxation. Scott Irving and Lauren Presutto will be taking away elevens students.

Your support with our fund raising effort is greatly appreciated and all monies will be donated to a charitable cause in Sri Lanka.

We are raising as much as we can to support our cause, and we need your help! Order your NEW 2017 | 2018 Entertainment Book or Entertainment Digital Membership now. You'll receive hundreds of valuable offers for everything you love to do, and help our fundraising at the same time!
