Dear Families,

I hope you all enjoyed the holiday break and welcome back to another busy term.

NAPLAN Over the next 2 weeks our Year 3, Year 5 and Year 7 students will be involved in NAPLAN. WE’RE TAKING IT IN OUR STRIDE ON FRIDAY 17 MAY 2019

Well it’s that time of year again when our school seriously starts talking about walking!

Walk Safely to School Day asks that we all consider our transport habits and try to incorporate more walking as part of a healthy, active way to get around. And although walking all the way to school isn’t realistic for many of us, it’s quite easy to figure out how you can build a walk into your family’s daily routine.

You can teach your child the healthy habit of walking more by:

• Walking with them the whole way to school • If they get the bus or train, walk past your usual stop and get on at the next stop • If you have to drive, park the car a few blocks away from the school and walk the rest of the way.

Regular exercise like walking with your child not only helps them (and you!) beat chronic problems like obesity, heart disease, behavioural and mental health issues and diabetes. It also gives you a great opportunity to teach your child safe ways to behave around roads and traffic.

Remember, Active Kids are Healthy Kids so get planning your own Walk Safely to School Day journey for Friday 17 May 2019!

Absences

Entertainment Book

With the cough and cold season now upon us we appreciate that at times students need to be away due to illness. As families are aware, staff actively follow up on unexplained absences and lateness. Families can notify the school by phone, email, note or the Skoolbag app of the reason for absences. If your child is unwell for an extended period of time (3 days or more) the school does require a medical certificate.

If families are planning on taking their child/ren out of school for longer than 3 days (e.g family holiday) then an exemption form must be filled out prior to the days absent. Please see Front Office staff if you require a form.

The 2019/2020 Entertainment Book is available to purchase from the school’s Front Office.

The book costs $70 and helps to raise funds for our school. It offers a variety of savings including dining at fine restaurants and hotels, 2 for 1 vouchers for casual family dining, sporting events, movies, special attractions, travel and more. You can also order online or purchase a digital membership.

Woolworths Earn & LearnAngle Vale Primary is again participating in this year’s Woolworths Earn & Learn program. Please support us in collecting stickers for our school. Collection boxes can be found in our Front Office and at the Playford Woolworths (off Curtis Rd).

ANGLESY

Hi! I’m Asher from Mr Malcolm’s class.

On the 6th of June we are having a Pyjama Day at school. We are having it for my little brother, who is also Mrs Amy Smith’s nephew. He has recently been diagnosed with Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood (AHC) - a one in a million neurological condition. My family is saving up for a trip to America so we can visit the world’s only AHC clinic to get him the best care possible for this rare and life altering condition.

If you could please bring a gold coin donation on this day we would be very grateful.

Thank you for your help to reach our goal,

From Asher and the whole Fechlie Family

We had the privilege of hosting senior Kaurna man, Mickey O’Brien at our school this week. He welcomed us back to school with an interactive, informative lesson about Welcome to Country and lots of Kaurna history - he even taught the adults a few things! We were all mesmerised by the stories he told, artefacts he shared and tricks he taught us. His message was about understanding and learning from each other - using listening ears, looking eyes and doing hands. We sang and spoke in Kaurna language, until we all said ‘Nakutha’ (see you later). We are enjoying learning more about Kaurna culture in our school.

The Year 6/7 classes are studying Drama in Performing Arts lessons with Lisa this term. We were lucky to secure five free drama workshops through True North Youth Theatre Ensemble, and we were all very impressed after their first session with us this week! Alirio and Tyson from True North inspired our students to think creatively, work collaboratively, and question constantly - ‘What else is it like?’ - giving us new perspectives and developing empathy skills. There was plenty of smiling, laughing, and thoughtful presence; including lots of intelligent dialogue from these promising young people. We are really going to enjoy these sessions and learn a lot from our visitors.

Welcome Back to Term 2!

A very warm welcome back. We are excited to be back working within your school community for another Term.

We had a great time in the holidays with an excursion to Wizbang (laser tag was our favourite!), bath bomb and soap making in our Jungle Lab, African Drumming and baking in our solar ovens. All the kids and carers had a great time and we are already looking forward to the next holidays so we can do it all again!

We also had another successful pupil free day session last week (9th May) which included digging for fossils in the sand table, learning to write our names in hieroglyphics and working as a team to complete the challenges in our Escape Room! We are already hard at work planning for the June pupil free day (7th June) which will be a superhero theme.

The first few weeks back have been super busy including making lots of gifts for Mother’s Day and having our own Lego Masters competition! This week we have been learning about our families and in the coming weeks we will be celebrating World Refugee Day and Reconciliation Week.

A clay workshop

Are you a parent or caregiver of a child under 12yo?

Does your young person find it difficult to talk about or express emotions?

When we ourselves are feeling calm and in control, we are more able to model to our young people effective strategies for dealing with emotions.

This workshop is built on this idea and will explore both ways to keep calm and reduce stress as well as strategies to support our young people to do the same.

When: Tuesday 25 June, 10.00am

Where: Family Zone, 2 Belalie Rd Ingle Farm

Places are limited, please phone 8250 6600 to book. Please note we are unable to provide crèche for this workshop
