Principal’s Message
Dear Parents and Guardians:
I am always surprised by how quickly the school year comes to an end. I believe it is
largely due to how enjoyable it is to see students celebrate success. From May to the end
of June, the number of events and activities where students have an opportunity to ex-
hibit their learning is quite remarkable. Music performances, athletics, fine arts night,
awards celebrations, are some examples of the many activities where I continually see
smiling students, staff and parents. These activities are a critical component to student
learning because they invite a larger community to participate in the celebration of our
students’ accomplishments. The activities can also be areas of self-discovery for our stu-
dents and provide valuable insight for future study or careers. These opportunities
would not exist without the incredible support of Seton’s staff, parents, and volunteers
who dedicate countless hours for our students.
I want to thank all of you who have played a part in creating enriching experiences for the St. Elizabeth Seton community. In particular, thank you to our two retiring teachers Mrs. Jarvey and Mrs. Walker for their many years of service to the thousands of families and students positively impacted throughout their careers. Your compassion and dedica-tion to education inspires us. I would also like to extend farewell wishes to the following teachers who will be joining other school communities in September. Mrs. Stecyk will be joining the Evanston community, Mrs. Schrauth will be joining St. Margaret’s and St. Luke’s as a Diverse Learning Teacher, Mrs. Dooley will be supporting St. Augustine and Mr. Textor will be taking a parental leave for the next school year. I am confident that our Grade 9 students are well prepared for their next steps. This
perspective is reinforced by the culture of return at Seton, a culture that continually sees
our students who find ways to give back to the community that helped shape who they
are today. Our students are ready to become contributing citizens of a global community
and take on the challenges and leadership to guide future generations. All of you have
something unique to offer our global community. I wish each and every one of you a life-
time challenges and accomplishments. To our returning and new students, I look for-
ward to welcoming you back to St. Elizabeth Seton in September.

ACHIEVEMENT TEST ADMINISTRATION SCHEDULE
JUNE 2016
Each year, Grade 6 and Grade 9 students write Provincial Achievement Tests (P.A.T.’s). The purpose of the achievement tests is to determine how
well students are learning what they are expected to learn, to inform Albertans about student achievement relative to Provincial standards, and
to assist schools in monitoring and improving student learning.
The students registered in Grade 6 and 9 are expected to write the test for their grade. The tests will be administered on the following dates:

We are requesting Junior High students arrive by 8:40am. If students do
arrive at the regular start time of 8:20am they will be accommodated for
by studying for their exams in their homeroom.
All tests will start at 9:00am and run until 10:30am. Students may take
an additional 30 minutes to complete the exam if necessary. In addition,
if your child has an Individual Program Plan (IPP), or an Individual
Support Plan (ISP), he/she may receive accommodations while writing
final exams. These accommodations may include, but are not exclusive
to such things as extra time, reader, scribe or use of a computer. It is
our expectation that any student with an IPP or ISP may take advantage
of accommodations when writing his/her exam. Your child will
automatically receive up to double the exam time during his/her exam.
ELL students may also receive up to double time for their exams.
Upon completion of the exams students are dismissed from school for the
remainder of the day. Students are reminded to bring their textbooks the
day of the exam.
Seton Students Dominate Math Challenge Again
I would first like to thank our excellent Math teachers: Mr. Eager, Mr. Hitching, Mr. Taylor, Mr. Textor, Mr. Weigel and all previous teachers and parents, who helped to prepare our students, the third year in a row, for this worthwhile academic endeavor.
We had 48 Gr. 9 Pascal Contest participants in the International Pascal Mathematics Contest test in February, 2016 this year! Congratulations to all of you for taking up the challenge.

The Gr. 7 and 8 Gauss Contest was Wednesday, May 11, 2015. Like the Pascal Contest, this was an excellent opportunity for students to have fun developing their mathematical problem solving abilities. All strong Math students were encouraged to participate. Also, congratulations to all 68, Gr. 7 and 8 students, who stepped up to the Gauss Mathematics challenge.

On the evening of Wednesday, May 18th, the school was a buzz with its annual Fine Arts Gala! It was a wonderful
evening showcasing our Band, Art and Drama classes. Each Junior High Band played a few selections, the Drama
classes performed some very entertaining pieces and the halls were filled with amazing art work from all of our clas-
ses. What talented students we have! As well, School Council hosted a very successful Silent Auction in the library.
Thank you to everyone who came out to support our Fine Arts programs. We hope you had an enjoyable evening.

Progress reports will be distributed at the end of the school day on June 28th. We will not be able to hand out pro-
gress reports prior to that time. If your child will not be here, please send in a large stamped addressed envelope
prior to that day and we will mail the report cards out.
If there is a question about the progress report the parents will have the opportunity on Wednesday, June 29th from
8-12pm to call or stop by the school so that the teacher can answer any questions you may have.

At this time of the year, we are beginning to prepare for
next year. The staff spends an inordinate amount of time
to carefully consider, with much thought, next year’s class
lists.
Requests for teachers or classmates, unfortunately, can-
not be considered. However, if there is a special educa-

[email protected]. Please trust that we will make the
best decision possible for your child.
Class Lists
Transitioning of students from school to school and
grade to grade has already begun. This process is
very important in reducing anxiety in many of our
students. I would encourage you to contact your
child’s teacher or the school if you have any con-
cerns or questions related to transitioning for next
year. Thank you for continuing to support our stu-
dents as we strive to offer them a great school expe-
rience. Your efforts are appreciated by administra-
tion and teachers.
Transitions
Class Placements for 2016/17
At the present time, projections are for approximately 780 students to attend St. Elizabeth Seton next year. It is very important that everyone understands that the decision regarding the placement of children into particular classes rests with the teachers and administration. Parent concerns and input are considered as part of a process when developing class lists. Could you have valid educational concerns regarding the placement of your child, you are advised to speak with your child’s teacher, and then put your concerns in writing to Mrs. Corah.

Annual General Meeting The staff and students would like to extend a big thank-
you to our School Council for all your hard work over the
past year. Thank-you to our Executive Chair Roxane
Schulte, our Vice-Chair Nicolle De Souza, our Treasurer
Kathryn Darroch, our Secretaries Tina Osiowy/Shelley
Grey-Sortland and to all of our parents that coordinate our
school council committees. Your service and commitment
to our school is greatly appreciated.
Our Annual General Meeting will be held on Tues-
day September 6, 2016. Below are our positions and
job descriptions. Elections will take place in Sep-
tember.
Chairperson:
The chair in consultation with the principal establishes
and circulates an agenda for each Council Meeting. The
chairperson chairs all Executive Committee and School
Council Meetings. The chair represents the School Council
at external functions. The chair is also responsible for sub-
mitting annually, a written report summarizing the activi-
ties of the Council to the Board of Trustees of the Calgary
Catholic School District.
Vice-Chairperson:
The vice-chair shall assist the Chairperson in School Coun-
cil matters and perform the Chairpersons'’ duties in their
absence. The vice-chair chairs the Nomination Committee
and the committee, which annually reviews the Bylaws.
Secretary:
The secretary shall record and be custodian of the minutes
of School Council meetings. The secretary ensures that a
public record of the minutes of School Council is available,
and that a copy of the minutes is archived in the school for
at least seven (7) years. The secretary shall maintain an
accurate list of names and addresses of Executive Officers
and Committee Chairpersons.
Treasurer:
The treasurer maintains the School Council bank accounts,
manages all financial transactions, and is the custodian of
all School Council funds. The treasurer ensures that accu-
rate accounting procedures are followed and provides a
statement of School Council’s financial position at each
regular Council meeting. The treasurer also prepares an
annual financial statement for the current School Council
and its successor, for the last meeting and the first meet-
ing of the school year.
COMMITTEES
Volunteer Committee:
Collect, collate and maintain a list of volunteers willing to
assist both School Council and School Staff and Admin-
istration with activities within the school.
Fundraising:
Suggest and organize fundraising activities consistent with
the overall goals of the school.
Parish Liaison:
Acts as liaison with the Pastor of our designated churches,
comments or reports on items from the parishes and keeps
Administration and Pastors informed by providing each
with Sunday bulletins and school newsletters.
Hot Lunch
Works on organizing monthly hot lunch for all students in
the school.

Hot Lunch Thank You’s
Many, many, many thanks to our Hot Lunch Com-
mittee organized by Ms. Munro and our parent
volunteers for a tremendous job this year. Once a
month since October, they provided our students
and staff with a variety of healthy, tasty lunches.
Some of our lunch suppliers were Subway, Wok
Box, OPA, Mucho Burrito, Booster Juice and Ex-
treme Pita. A heart-warming thank you to all of
the wonderful parents in our community who
stepped up for all your hard work, time and pa-
tience.
2016/17 School Supply Lists
As always, parents are responsible for
purchasing student supplies for the
upcoming school year. Our school is
again using the services of SchoolKitz
Supplies for which forms were distrib-
uted earlier this year and can still be
viewed online from the link on our
school website at
http://www.cssd.ab.ca/stelizabethseton. Although
the deadline has passed for sending the forms to the
school, you can still order online with SchoolKitz
Supplies at http://www.schoolkitzsupplies.ca/
If you choose to purchase the supplies yourself,
please make every effort to have them in place for
the first day of school on September 1, 2016.
School Start Up—Sept. 2016
Our school office will reopen on Thursday, August 18th from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm.
The first day of classes is Sept. 1, 2016.
Details about the first day of school will also come home in the student progress report envelopes. We want our
students and families to arrive at school feeling both safe and welcome. At the same time we wish to minimize
the commotion of the first day.
Students will gather at and then enter at their assigned entrances. Entry through the main office doors is for
visitors and deliveries ONLY. Entry via these main doors by students is only when they are late (late slips are
required to gain entry into class).

This year, why not make reading a part of your family’s summer plans? It is very common for students to experience a
loss of reading skills over the summer months, but children who continue to read actually gain skills, like fluency,
comprehension and knowledge of vocabulary and concepts. Here are a few tips that might help to make reading en-
joyable for your children this summer:
Read aloud together with your child as often as you can, every day if possible. Even older children enjoy
being read to. Make it fun by reading outdoors on the front steps, patio, in a hammock, or at the beach or park.
Also, let your children read to you. For younger children, talk about unfamiliar words, point out the relation-
ship between words and sounds, and listen to each other’s’ thoughts about the text and pictures.
Set a good example! Keep lots of reading material around the house. Turn off the electronic devices and set aside
some time to read for everyone, including mom and dad.
Read the same book your child is reading and discuss it. Discussing characters, their actions, and sharing
the experience of a book enriches our lives. It allows parents to have a window into their children’s thinking,
and provides a way to deepen relationship, mind and build capacity for thought, empathy and insight.
Give your children choice about what they want to read. Investigate what is currently popular in children’s
literature. Check out the many excellent graphic novels for children, or try out a magazine for kids (in print or
online) such as Sports Illustrated for Kids, Owl, or National Geographic World.
Buy or borrow audio books, and listen to them in the car or while travelling.
Take your children to the library regularly. Investigate the summer reading programs and other services of-
fered there, and encourage your child to participate. Check the library calendar for special summer reading
activities and events. Librarians can also provide age appropriate suggestions for summer reading.
Make travel a way to encourage reading by reading aloud traffic signs, billboards, notices. Show your
children how to read a map, and once you are on the road, let them take turns being the navigator. Pick
up brochures and read them to find out about places to visit and activities to check out.
Encourage children to keep a record of their summer activities. Journaling, keeping a scrapbook, tak-
ing photos or making videos are a few of the ways children can create a record of their summer.
Encourage and help your children to write postcards or letters. How wonderful for Grandma and
Grandpa, or aunts, uncles or friends to receive a handwritten postcard! (And what an excellent way to
practice writing skills.)
Above all, enjoy reading! What could be a better result of a summer holiday than helping to build a life-
long love of reading and literacy?!
Literacy doesn’t have to end in June!

School Council is made up of parents whose children attend St. Elizabeth Seton. Members of Council serve as
representatives for the rest of the parent population. School Council is open to any parent of students in our
school. Council represents the general parent body, provides advice to school administration and assists in
enriching the school experience for our students. All members of School Council are busy people who volunteer
their time to the benefit of all students at St. Elizabeth Seton. Please consider giving some of your time to help
our students. Thank you.

Kindergarten Registrations
We are now accepting Kindergar-
ten registrations for our 2016–
2017 school year. Please bring your
child’s Government Issued Birth
Certificate when you register. You
will also need proof of address and
a Catholic Sacrament Certificate
(parent or child). Copies of these
documents can be made at the
school while you fill out the regis-
tration form.
To register, children
must be five years old on
or before March 1 of the
upcoming school year.
This means, in order for
a child to be eligible to
enter kindergarten in

Awards Ceremony—June 16
On Thursday, June 16, 2016 at 6:30 pm in our school gymnasium St. Elizabeth
Seton Staff will be hosting our year end Junior High Awards Ceremony. We
look forward to coming together as a community to celebrate the academic, ath-
letic and citizenship development and successes that our students have
achieved. Letters will be issued to those families of the students being awarded.
Congratulations and God’s blessings go out to the students at St. Elizabeth Seton who have celebrated sacra-
ments this school year. We are very proud of you! We would like to recognize all students in the school who have
received sacraments this year by presenting them with a small token during our year end assembly on Tuesday,
June 21st at 10:30am.
Please watch for our school patrollers who volunteer their time to ensure students are
crossing safely in the marked crosswalk across Hidden Valley Drive.
Patrollers have been trained to obey traffic laws and have been instructed by Calgary
Parking Authority to report vehicles that disobey traffic laws within the school zone and
endangering the safety of our students.

Safety is a Number 1 Priority
The Calgary Catholic School District has established safety procedures for its schools and parents are expected to
do their part to ensure the safety of the school. There are visitor and volunteer sign in books at the main office for
volunteers and all visitors to the school. In the interests of safety, please do not come into the school and go to a
classroom without checking in at the office first. If you are waiting for a child at lunch or after school, you may
wait at the office, ensuring that you have checked in with our office staff.
Severe Allergies

If your child has a Life-Threatening Allergy, please make sure that you have a current Severe
Allergy Alert Form on file in the office. These forms were included in your starting package
but are also available from the office. If anything changes with your child’s allergy, please en-
sure that the forms are updated immediately.
The location of your child’s Epipen needs to be known to all staff who may encounter your child. Your child
must carry an Epipen with him/her at all times or have it readily available (i.e., in the same room in a location
known to the teacher). A second Epipen can be stored in the office. The child’s locker is not a suitable place
to store an Epipen.

We have witnessed numerous parent’s double parking during times of congestion to
drop their child off at the school. Double parking to drop your child off is against the
law because it is very dangerous and we will be reporting license plates to the police in
an effort to stop this from happening. Put your child’s safety first over convenience. If
you personally witness this activity happening, please report the license plate number
to us at the office. We appreciate your attention to this matter.
Where’s the Bus
Elementary bussing‐ Prior to going outside in the mornings, please call 403‐531‐3900 to check if
your bus is delayed.
Parking Concerns
SES Newsletter Appropriate Student Dress (District Code) Health regulations and monthly fire drills mandate the wearing of proper footwear in the school at all times.
To protect and preserve our school we request that all students have indoor and outdoor footwear. As the warmer
weather arrives, many classes are outside for physical activities. We request the use of proper footwear. Beach type
footwear, flip flops, and sandals are not safe for physical activity. Running shoes are required for daily physical edu-
cation.
Students are expected to dress appropriately and in accordance with good grooming practices. Pants with waist lne
must be an appropriate height in order to prevent inappropriate exposure. As the nicer weather is now upon us, cut-
offs are not acceptable; short-shorts and skirts, skimpy tops, e.g.: tops too low to cover chest area properly, see-
through tops, halter tops, top with spaghetti straps, tops too short to cover stomach area; or t-shirts with questiona-
ble pictures or phrases are not acceptable. As a general rule, hats are not to be worn within the building. Students
should always dress for the weather as well.

1. The default dash (-) indicates that the assignments has not yet been assigned/collected/graded.
2. A zero and a comment of 'not yet submitted' means that the assignment was not submitted on time and is
weighted at a zero until such time as it is submitted and graded. This includes work not completed due to va-
cations and other unexcused absences.
3. A dash (-) with a comment (e.g 'see me to schedule a time to write your quiz') will be used for a student who
was absent for an excused reason (sick, attending a family emergency, etc.) and needs to see the teacher to
arrange a time to get caught up - this does not count toward the cumulative average until the assignment/
quiz is completed. It can be changed to a zero if a student does not get caught up in a reasonable amount of
time.
D2L News for Junior High Parents
Junior High Track and Field
Once again we have a track and field team here at Seton. This year we have just over 100 athletes competing against 7
other schools at the Division 1 district track meet. This event will take place at Glenmore Athletic Park on Thursday
June 2, 2016 from 12:00pm– 5:30pm. The students will participate in the following
events; 60m, 100m race, 200m race, 300m race, 800m race, the long jump, the discus
throw, turbo javelin and the shot put. As well we will have a boys 4x100m relay, a
girls 4x100m relay, and a mixed 4x100m relay,(2 girls/2 boys). All students will par-
ticipate within their grade and gender so grade 7 girls will compete against grade 7
girls from the other schools. If your child is representing the “Sting” track team please

Junior High Flag Football
Once again it has been a great season of Flag Football for the Sting. The student
athletes showed great skill and sportsmanship as they represented our school in
various events. The season ended with great success! Go Sting Go!!
During the month of June we will be holding two functions to celebrate the years your children have been at St. Eliz-
abeth Seton School. The purpose of this letter is to provide information on these activities.
On Wednesday, June 1, 2016 we will be taking the students on a retreat to Bowness Park. While at the
retreat the students will take part in various reflections, games and fun activities. Please sign and return the
attached permission form by May 27, 2016.
On the evening of Thursday, June 9, 2016 we will be celebrating our Grade 9 Farewell at St. Luke’s Par-
ish with Mass beginning at 5:00pm. After Mass the students will be presented with congratulatory certificates
and are invited to gather in the church hall where cake will be served.
Please arrive at the church by 4:30pm.

All proceeds will go to St. Elizabeth Seton Athletics, we are currently working towards purchasing a wrestling mat, a sport where all junior high students can make the team. This multipurpose mat which will be used for more than just wrestling, the entire school uses the mat for physical education classes.
Fundraising
For the first time ever, St. Elizabeth Seton Physical Education & Athletics department will be selling $10.00 plain orange baseball caps with the intent of students personalizing them for year-end mementos and to wear Seton colour with pride. The orange hats can be used for track and field (Thursday June 2nd), cross country in Sept 2016, as well as some of our spirit and theme days such as hats on for mental health.
The last official day of Library operation is Wednes-
day, June 8th. Parents, please assist your children in
looking around home to locate any books that belong to St.
Elizabeth Seton and ensure that they are returned by June
8. When in doubt, look for the school stamp on the inside
cover of the books and textbooks. J.H. textbooks must be
returned on the day of each exam. Your help here is greatly
appreciated. Please note that the cost of having to replace
any missing or damaged books will be billed back to par-
ents.

Ensure email is used on a computer located in the area of the home where parents
can respond to children who need immediate assistance.
Safety Tips
1. Strong password—10 characters or longer—Including Upper Case Letters, Lower Case Letters, Numbers and
Symbols.
2. Never click on links in emails (may be phishing links).
3. Never open attachments in emails unless from a trusted source, and you have validated that the source of the
email did actually send it. Viruses spread through attachments—example TXT files.

The school year is winding down, and students are already getting excited for summer holidays! Our
Grade 9’s are anticipating the changes that high school will bring and our Grade 6’s will be entering
junior high, which brings many exciting changes! June also brings exams, which can be quite stressful
for students. As a parent, you can help your child organize his or her schedule. Help your child make a
plan for studying and preparing for exams, while still encouraging healthy habits and balance. Some simple things
that will help include drinking plenty of water, eating a variety of nutritious foods, getting daily exercise, and en-
suring adequate sleep (8-10 hours). It is important for students to know that physical and mental health go together
- we need to take care of our physical health if we want our brains to work well.
High School Information
Notre Dame’s Meet the Teacher Advisor (TA) Night will be held on Tuesday, June 14th at 6:30pm. Notre
Dame will mail out a letter of invitation that students should receive within the next two weeks. The letter
will let students know who their TA will be and you can expect a phone call from the teacher as well.
Multiple Choice Test Taking Tips
1. Preview the test before starting.
2. Read the entire question carefully before you look at the answers. Make sure you completely understand the question before selecting an answer.
3. Eliminate answers that you know are incorrect.
4. Read all of the choices before choosing your answer.
5. Often your first choice will be the correct one, unless you have misread the question. It is important to trust your instincts, even if you have to change your answer: Although you’ve probably been told to stick with your first impression no matter what, it’s okay to change your answer if you feel strongly that another response is the correct one. It’s a myth to trust only your first response, but try not to second guess yourself too much. Base any changes on concrete reasoning, not just a feeling.
6. In "all of the above" and "none of the above" choices… if you are certain one of the statements is true, don't choose "none of the above" or if one of the statements is false don't choose "all of the above".
7. A positive choice is more likely to be true than a negative one.
8. Often the correct answer is the choice with the most information.
9. Do not spend too much time on any one question; skip more difficult questions and go back to those once all their questions have been answered. (Circle the number of each question that you have skipped so you can easily go back to it at the end.)
10. Underline or circle important words such as: all, always, most likely, probably, best, not, difference, usually, except, most, unlikely, likely etc.
11. If two options are opposite each other, chances are one of them is correct.
12. Double check your answers to make sure you have answered everything before handing in your test.

Dear Parents and Students, After 37 years with Calgary Catholic and 10 years at Saint Elizabeth Seton I am off to a new adventure called retirement. St Elizabeth Seton has been a very important part of my life; it has been my work place but also my home. I have been proud to be part of the Sting community. I would like to share a few thoughts I’ve learned over my career.
• Nothing of value comes without effort. • Kindness is more important than perfection • Good teachers learn from each child • To experience the wonder of life through the eyes of a child is
the most rewarding feeling in the world.
I have also learned that a fulfilled life is not possible without the support of family and friends. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Saint Elizabeth Seton community, parents, students and staff for your friendship and kindness over the last ten years. I was truly blessed to have enjoyed my job every day and for Seton to have been my home away from home.
