SAINT JANE FRANCES CATHOLIC SCHOOL
2745 Jane Street Toronto, Ontario

It is that time of the year
when students need to be
reminded to dress properly
for the weather (mittens,
hats, scarves, and
boots). Labeling items
would be helpful, as many
items make their way to the
Lost and Found and are
often not claimed. We ask
that each child have indoor
footwear to wear in the
school and wear boots
outside when the weather
becomes rainy or snowy.
Please listen to the weather
reports before deciding
what they should wear to
school each day.
Except under inclement
weather conditions,
students will be outside
during recesses. Research
indicates that time outdoors
in the fresh air allows
students to refocus on their
studies. We will monitor
the weather conditions daily
and make decisions based
upon our local
conditions. Please bear in
mind that children who are
too ill to go outside should
stay at home resting and
should not be at school.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE MAY 2017
During the month of May, we will be focusing on the virtue of COMPASSION. May is
also known as the “Month of Mary “and is a great opportunity for all of us to renew
our own devotion to the Mother of God. The tradition of dedicating the month of
May to Mary began in the thirteenth century. We offer our devotions to the Blessed
Virgin Mary, the “Queen of May” as a way of showing our love toward her. Teachers
will be spending time during the month of May praying the rosary with their
students and we encourage families to do the same at home. St. Jane Frances as a
school will be honoring Mary by praying to Mary in the form of a Multicultural Living
Rosary on Monday May 15th in the afternoon. We express our gratitude to Ms.
Zupan, Ms. Maiorano and Mrs. Pletzer for coordinating this powerful prayerful effort
on our behalf in the school.
In the month of May, the Toronto Catholic District School Board, along with the
Catholic Archdiocese of Toronto, celebrates Catholic Education Week. This year’s
theme is the Year of the Parish and there will be many events planned at the
Catholic Education Center, the local schools and in the communities from Monday
May 1st, 2017 to Friday May 5TH, 2017 this school year. St. Jane Frances School has a
number of activities planned. I would like to take this opportunity to formally invite
you to our Catholic education Week events.
May also marks the period of time in which many of our students will be involved in
the standardized testing. Students in grades 2, 5 and 7 will be writing the CAT-4
assessment. This standardized test assesses the essential learning outcomes in
reading, language spelling and math. Information obtained through this assessment
enables teachers to develop a deeper understanding of students’ areas of strength
and needs. Students in Grades 3 and grade 6 will be completing the EQAO
Assessment from May 29th to June 8th, 2017. All classroom teachers and specialist
teachers have been very busy all year preparing their students and we wish our
students all the best as they complete these assessments this year. There are
fantastic Parent Resources to help prepare for EQAO listed on the EQAO website for
everyone to access. ( www.eqao.ca)
On behalf of the St. Jane Frances Staff we wish all the moms in the community a
very blessed and well deserved Happy Mother’s Day!
Sincerely,
Lillian J. Kurnik Jackie Puri Principal Vice Principal

8. Arrival and Dismissal Safety Traffic Further to our note that went home on April 21st 2017, we would like to inform you that the Traffic Enforcement Police were at the school at dismissal time on April 27nd 2017, directing parents who pick up their children from school, to park either in the St. Jane Frances church parking lot or on Dolores Street. The Traffic Enforcement Police also informed us of the dangers of parents parking in the staff parking lot and creating a traffic bottle neck when exiting the parking lot on to Jane Street. This blocks the school buses and other vehicles. The vacant parking spots in the staff parking lot are for taxis and other authorized vehicles transporting students home. To ensure the safe movement of vehicles from our staff parking lot, we ask you not to park in the staff parking lot. Thank you for your support and cooperation in keeping our students safe. The Spenvalley Drive loop is a drop off and pick up area for parents. Please be advised that beginning May 3rd 2017, the Traffic Enforcement Police will begin issuing a $30.00 ticket to drivers whose vehicles are parked illegally in the bus loading zone in front of the main doors of St. Jane Frances School.

May 5th is Parish Family Day
We thank the many schools who shared their initiatives, artwork, and videos and written work celebrating the bonds between
our parishes and our schools, and the relationships that are continually nurtured by our staff, pastors, students and
families. All submissions are on the Board’s website her:
https://www.tcdsb.org/Board/NurturingOurCatholicCommunity/YearoftheParish/PFDShowcaseSubmissions/Pages/default.as
px The archived video from the central Parish Family Day Celebration on May 5th will be added to the board’s website the
following week.
Our focus now shifts to the local Parish Family Day Celebrations that are being planned by our schools, in partnership with
their own parishes. Families are encouraged to contact their local school for details. Let’s continue to celebrate the parish-school relationship!
Exploring the Critical Role of Catholic Education in Contemporary Society
The Institute for Catholic Education (ICE) wants to hear from everyone in the TCDSB community about Catholic education
in Ontario! "Renewing the Promise" is a dialogue.
Your input about Catholic education in Ontario - the way it fulfills its mandate as well as the challenges and opportunities of
the present moment - will help to guide the work of ICE for the future. A special face to face consultation on “Renewing the
Promise” is being scheduled at the TCDSB’s Catholic Education Centre in May. More information will be sent home to
parents once details have been finalized or check www.tcdsb.org for the latest news.
You are also invited to offer your ideas TODAY and input on-line through Thought Exchange. Log in to participate:
http://signup.thotex.com/iceont/Pyv
Thought exchange will provide background information and three open-ended questions that you answer anonymously.
When the survey closes, responses will be sorted into themes. You will then be invited to look at emerging themes and
prioritize them, locally and provincially.
Your ideas will provide important input for a gathering of the Catholic community later in the year on the theme of Renewing
the Promise. When the process is completed, results and analysis will be available on a designated public website. Catholic
Education Week 2018 will be the occasion to celebrate all that we learned. Join the dialogue today!
Community Consultation for Proposed Changes to Secondary School Admissions Policy
The Ministry of Education has directed the TCDSB to adopt fixed attendance boundaries for all secondary schools in order to
be consistent with most Ontario school Boards. Complying with the Ministry’s request for fixed attendance boundaries for all
TCDSB secondary schools will have a significant impact on the Board’s current Admissions & Placement of Secondary
Pupils policy which may affect your child’s choice of high schools.
Community consultation on the proposed changes to TCDSB’s Secondary School admissions policy begins on May 1 with
an online survey (www.tcdsb.org). A special Secondary School Admissions Consultation Night will be held on Monday,
May 8, 2017 from 7 pm to 10 pm at the TCDSB’s Catholic Education Centre at 80 Sheppard Avenue East (next to the
Sheppard Subway station). Free parking and child care will be available.
May is Speech, Language and Hearing Awareness Month
Did you know that speech and language delays are the most frequently reported problem in children?
Early speech and language development has a major impact on future academic success. For example, research shows that a
child’s vocabulary when starting school is a prime predictor of school success or failure. We also know that early language
skills are directly related to later reading skills, and that children with poor language development have difficulty using
language to learn math and science.
If you have a concern about your child’s speech or language, your school Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) can help!
Speak to your child’s teacher or school principal to find out more, or contact the Speech and Language Department at 416-
222-8282, extension 2261.

Get Ready to Get Rolling! Bike to School week is May 29 – June 2, 2017
Join students and teachers across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area to celebrate Bike to School Week, May 29 to June
2, 2017. The goal of the week is to inspire initiatives among local schools, school boards and community partners to
encourage students to “walk and roll” to school. If the students do not have access to a bicycle, try scooting, skateboarding
and rollerblading to school. Roller blades are required to be removed prior to entering the school. Register your school for the
2017 TCDSB Bike to School Week at biketoschoolweek.ca and complete the school reporting survey by June 12, 2017. All
schools that complete the school reporting survey will receive a Certificate of Participation.
