Principal’s Report

Wiseberry BBQ On Wednesday, September 25, Wiseberry Real Estate will be providing once again a BBQ lunch for the winning House. We will announce on Monday which house will be invited to this.

Value of the Month Next Friday, the last day of term, we will be recognising the wonderful students for the value of the month, which was ‘Personal Best’. Congratulations to all the students who have received notification of their achievement. I look forward to sharing a lovely morning tea with these students.

Kindergarten 2020 Our Kindergarten program will commence in Term 4 with our orientation for all the families on November 6. If you know of any families who live in our area and are school age please let them know we are taking enrolments now at the school office.

Mural You would have noticed our beautiful mural is now complete. Gary and Natalie Purchase have donated their time and expertise to paint this wonderful mural for us all here at Kariong to enjoy. On behalf of everyone I would to thank them for their generosity. The mural is called ‘Migration’ and we look forward to seeing more wonderful work around our school for the students to enjoy. Thank you Gary and Natalie!

Have a great weekend everyone and see you on Monday for our last and busy week of Term 3!

Parking and Driving In and Around Kariong Public School Unfortunately there seems to be some confusion surrounding the road rules whilst parking and driving

around our school. Not following the road rules puts our students at risk and can result in significant fines

and substantial demerit points. The Parking Ranger and Police will be randomly monitoring the roads

around our school to ensure the safety of all our students.

Truscott Close is the rear access to our school and closest to the front office. There is a ‘Drop and Kiss

Zone’, where you can stay there for a maximum of 2 minutes. The driver needs to remain within 3 metres

of the car within that time. If you disobey this rule you could receive a $177 fine and loss of licence points.

Langford Drive, which is the front access to our school, is a road that is almost entirely a school zone.

There is parking available outside of the crossing and bus zones. U-turns and 3 point turns in the school

zone, attracts a fine of up to $425 and loss of 4 demerit points. Not stopping or slowing as you approach

the crossing zone, where there is a solid stop line, can result in a fine of up to $531 and loss of 4 licence

points. Stopping or parking in the crossing zone attracts the same fines and demerits. Our aim is to keep

ALL students safe and we would appreciate your assistance in this area. There is also a ‘Drop and Kiss

Zone’ which you can stay for up to 2 minutes. During this time you need to stay within 3 metres of your

vehicle.

A gentle reminder that our staff carpark is for staff parking and deliveries only, please refrain from parking

in this car park. We appreciate your understanding.

For your information, the full list of school zone offences, fines and demerit points can be accessed at

http://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/documents/roads/safety-rules/demerits-school.pdf.

Let’s keep all of our students safe and follow the rules in school zones. Together we can ensure the safety

of all Kariong students.

K-2 Sports Day

Friday 27 September 2019

Parents are invited to come and support our K-2 Sports Day up on the oval

and to join us for recess and lunch. Races will start at 9.15am and then

students will rotate between 12 exciting activities in their class groups.

Students will need to wear their sports uniform including hat, but can

wear a t-shirt/ socks/ head band in their house colour.

Peer Support – Lesson 7 In Peer Support this week children have focused on the skills of winning in a friendly way and coping with losing. The children participated in various activities and discussed how to accept the outcome of a game, no matter what it is, in a friendly way in order to maintain those friendships. During the week, encourage your child to practise these skills in all aspects of life – whether it be weekend sport or choosing what to watch. The Year 6 Teachers

Razzle Dazzle Showcase 2019 Our Razzle Dazzle Showcase for 2019 will be held on Thursday 7 November (not 9 November as incorrectly stated last week). There will be 2 shows: a morning and an evening show. Tickets will be allocated early next term to families of students who are performing. Save the date! Our students and staff are already working really hard to produce another amazing show this year. Mrs Kerry Rayner Razzle Dazzle Coordinator

Do you have a child who turns 5 before 1 July 2020? Enrolments for Kindergarten are now being taken at the office. Please collect an enrolment pack from the office (located on Truscott Avenue) as soon as possible or contact the school office by telephoning 4340 1885 or emailing: [email protected]. School tour and orientation dates are fast approaching!

PBL Update – Class Transitions There are lots of times during the day, when students need to transition

from one area of their classroom to another. This week students will be

talking with their teacher about how this looks in their room. Teachers will

be giving out PBL cards to students who are showing Respect, Responsibility

and Personal Best during these class transitions.

Kariong Public School Robotics Group The Robotics team, as part of their Innovation project for the First Lego League competition later this year, is conducting a survey using Survey Monkey online to gather students and community thoughts on their preferred choice for improvements to Kariong area. The team has compiled a short list of options for your deliberation.

1. The installation of two basketball courts and two netball courts to provide a recreational area that the community can use.

2. Renovation and expansion of Kariong Library with updated technology and facilities given that the current furnishings were designed prior to the construction of the local high school and are no longer adequate.

3. The opening of a new park that will give the community a space for picnics, a playground,

a bike track and local amenities.

4. The rejuvenation of Mt Penang Pool and grounds to create a local sports area that will alleviate travel times and allow the creation of Kariong based sporting teams in codes that would otherwise involve playing for clubs further afield.

Please take a minute to complete the survey using the survey monkey website link or QR code below.

Parking rules are designed to stop vehicles from parking where it would be dangerous or inconvenient for others.

Please consider the residents when parking in streets surrounding your school.

Safety learning program

Traffic and Parking around your School

School Bus lights – buses use signs and orange flashing ‘wigwag’ lights to warn

motorists and pedestrians that they are picking up or setting down school children. The

lights begin to flash when the bus stops and the doors are opened. They keep flashing

for about 30 seconds after the doors close and continue even after the bus moves off.

You must not drive past the bus in the same direction at more than 40 km/h while the

‘wigwag’ lights are flashing as there may be children crossing or about to cross the road.

A School Zone is the area around a school with a speed limit of 40 km/h. Between the

School Zone and End School Zone signs you must obey the school zone speed limit.

The school zone speed limit only applies on gazetted school days and during the times

shown on the sign.

A No Parking Zone means that you must not stop for more than two minutes. You must remain in or within

three metres of the vehicle. No Parking Zones are suitable for dropping off and picking up.

THESE SIGNS MEAN YOU MAY STOP

HERE TO DROP OFF / PICK UP

BUT YOU MUST

stop for up to 2 minutes only

stay within 3 metres of vehicle

Kids look to you to keep them safe - please park legally in school zones

HEAVY FINES and DEMERIT POINTS APPLY

A Bus Zone means that the area is restricted for bus use only. If hours of operation are

shown, the restriction only applies to this time. You may use this area outside of

these times.

A No Stopping Zone means no stopping at any time.

Page 13: Principal’s Report - Kariong€¦ · Principal – Mrs Toni Skinner WEEK 9 20 September 2019 Principal’s Report Week 9 has flown by with lots happening before we draw to a close

You must not stop your vehicle (that is, bring it to a stop and either stay with the vehicle or leave it parked) in the

following circumstances:

Double parked (that is in the road alongside a car that is parked)

Across a driveway or footpath

On a median strip or traffic island

On footpaths and nature strips

On or within 20 metres before and 10 metres after a children’s crossing or pedestrian crossing

Within an intersection

Within 10 metres of an intersecting road at an intersection without traffic lights unless signposted otherwise

In Bus Stop, Bus Zone, Taxi Stand or Taxi Zone signed areas

At least one metre from any other parked vehicle, close as possible and parallel to the kerb, and facing the

same direction as the traffic lane

Within three metres of any double centre lines

Within 20 metres before and 10 metres after a bus stop

Other times when you must not stop

Adherence to signposting, linemarking and road rules

around your school will assist in providing a safe

environment for the school community and residents.
