Principal’s Message Enrollment: Thank you for getting your students here for Official Enrollment on Tuesday, September 20! Robinson’s official enrollment for the 2016-17 school-year is 762 students. This is a decrease of 28 students compared to last year’s official numbers; however, we continue to enroll new students each week! The enrollment breaks down by grade level as follows: 6th grade, 256; 7th grade, 259; and 8th grade, 247. Conferences: Conferences will be held on Tuesday, October 25, 4:00-7:00 p.m.; Thursday, October 27, 4:00-7:00
p.m. and Friday, October 28, 1:30-3:50 p.m. Students will be dismissed at 12:30 on Friday, October 28. Please make arrangements for transportation on Friday if your student does not ride the bus home. Students will not be allowed to wait on campus for their confer-ence to begin, as there will not be anyone available to supervise them. Additionally, the After School Program will not be in session on these days. All students will be given a conference preference sheet to bring home to parents. If you do not receive a confirmation regarding your child’s scheduled conference time and location by October 18, please contact your child’s teachers. Ideally, confer-ences will be student led—therefore, your student should be in attendance with you at conferences. We look forward to seeing you at conferences! Our goal is to conference with 100% of Robinson parents!! NO SCHOOL: Mark your calendars! There will be NO SCHOOL for students on Friday, October 21 (teacher work day) and Monday, October 24 (Inservice)! Enjoy your extended weekend! Parent Feedback Needed: All USD 259 schools are committed to helping children succeed in school! We have many ways to help children learn and provide additional support to ensure success. MTSS (Multi Tier Systems of Support) is the focus of all USD 259 schools. It is a multi-step process of providing instruction and support to promote the success of all students academically and behav-iorally. In order to measure where Robinson is currently operating, we are asking that parents, students and staff complete surveys regarding the climate of our school. A link to the parent survey can be found on our homepage (www.usd259.org/Robinson). Our assigned ID is “TKILYY”and the password is “parent”. We would like for parents (one per household) to complete this survey on or be-fore October 31. We will provide opportunities for taking the survey at conferences! Staff and student surveys have already been given at school. Thank you for taking time to provide us with this valuable feedback!! Choices Fair: Mark your calendars! This year’s Choices Fair will be held on Thursday, November 10th at Century II, 5:00-8:00 p.m. If you are looking at high school programs for your 8th grader, this is a perfect opportunity to meet with representatives from every high school. If you know of anyone who might be interested in Robinson’s Pre-IB Program, this would be an excellent time for them to meet our teachers and learn more about our program! Arriving to School ON TIME: Parents…we need your help!!! Each morning we have an overwhelming number of students ar-riving late to school! Please get your student to school on time. The first bell rings at 7:50 a.m. Students are expected to be in their first hour classes and ready to learn by 8:00 a.m. Additionally, students who are wanting to eat breakfast at school should arrive no later than 7:45. Breakfast closes at 7:50 a.m. Thank you for your support!

ers and is always respectful to adults and other students.
8th Grade: Emma Reed—Emma leads by example in the AVID classroom. She is always eager to participate and has
good organizational skills and grades reflective of her abilities.
SEPTEMBER
7th Grade: Kacie Hockman—Kacie has excellent grades and organizational skills. She is very helpful gets along
well with others especially when participating in AVID tutorials.
8th Grade: Lisa Perry—Lisa does a great job participating in classroom activities and being a good example to others.
She works hard and asks questions for clarification when necessary. She is very organized and shows that she cares about her grades.

Robinson Middle School participates in a recycling program. The program helps Youth Sports here in Wichita. Rob-
inson has been so successful with our program we won $200 for our Science Department! You are welcome to help
us out The recycle poly carts are red and green; located on the south side of the courtyard off Bleckley under the
windows beyond the ramp. Cardboard only in the green recycle bin in the NE corner of the south parking lot.
We can collect:

Sizzlin’ Sixlets Team Students are breezin’ through the Paleolithic and Neolithic Ages and understanding that tools were created by them as evidence for the rise of the Agricultural Revolu-tion and the domestication of animals. More importantly, they are analyzing how agriculture and technology impact the shift from nomadic peoples to settled commu-nities or civilizations. The first stop is…. . They will gain knowledge of this once ancient civilization and their contributions to the world and how their geography and environment shaped their lives. Lastly, please continue talk with your kids about current events daily. In sixth grade LA, students are still learning about how our relationships influence us in a variety of ways. This unit intro-duces students to the theme of relationships through a variety of literature. Students have been reading and discussing pieces about bullying, doing good deeds, and the history of famous friendships, like Helen Keller and Anne Sullivan. Throughout the unit, students are beginning to focus in on some key figurative language pieces and plot elements. As always, students should be reading at least 20 minutes a day. Make sure you’re looking out for their reading log. Let’s reach the 25 book goal!
Sixth grade math students successfully finished their first unit covering factors and multiples and have started working on Unit 2: Expanding the Number System. This unit will introduce stu-dents to negative numbers and challenge them to explore real-world scenarios where negative numbers are found. Students
will use number lines to compare integers and discover the concept of absolute value and magnitude. Finally, the unit will conclude with students graphing coordinate pairs on a four-quadrant grid. Students have been doing an excellent job keeping up with their weekly math homework. Remember that the weekly homework sheets should be picked up in class every Monday. Students will work the assigned problems each evening and turn the entire homework sheet in on Friday. Applied Academics
The theme for October for UNIQUE is, “Science Fair Experiment”. The Leveled chapter is called “The Car Race.” Chapters will include: (1) Science Class; (2) Earth and Space Science; (3) Life Science (4) Physical Sci-ence; (5) Technology and Science; and (6) Science Fair. The Life Skills lessons will include: (1) What is a Scien-tist?; (2) Soil Layers Dessert Cup; (3) Water in the Desert; (4) Simple Tools; (5) Safe S’mores; and (6) How to ask a Question.
In Math, our concepts will cover story problems that consist of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The students will be learning how to make and interpret graphs, algebra, geometry, money, reading schedules and telling time. In Science, students will learn how to create a Science Fair. In Social Studies, students will learn about Thomas Edison.
In October, the student’s will only have one Friday that will be the regular schedule due to Mr. Liv-ingston being out of town on the 14th, No School on the 21st and Parent-Teacher Conferences on the 28th. Calendar of Events for October 20th- All School Skate Party-6:00-8:00 21st and 24th- No School 25th, 27th, and 28th- Parent-Teacher Conferences Tuesday the 25th and Thursday the 27th- Students will be in school all day. Conferences start at 4:00 and go until 7:30. No Conferences on Wednesday the 26th. Friday the 28th- Students will leave at 12:30. Conferences are 1:20-3:50. Mrs. Lo Nigro and Mr. Livingston will be sending information at the beginning of October to set up your stu-dent’s day and time.

Band News 6th Grade
The 6th Graders are off to a great start! Just a few things to remember:
1) reed players (clarinets and saxophones) need to have at least 3 playable reeds at all times (clarinet players should have Mitchell Lurie brand, size 2 ½) and a reed guard. Ask your student if they have the correct reed guard.
2) all students should have a band book (“Essential Elements 2000, book 1) and cleaning supplies

OCTOBER 10, 6 P.M.: PTSO MEETING AND SITE COUNCIL Join us in the cafeteria as we go over upcoming events and talk about things that support RMS students and staff. After that, stick around for Mrs. Champlin’s monthly Site Council meeting. It’s the best place to find out what’s going on at your child’s school. OCTOBER 25, 4-7:30 P.M.: PICKUP OF FUNDRAISER ORDERS If your child sold fundraiser items, please plan on picking up those orders on Oct. 25. It’s imperative that everyone pick up their orders on this day, as we do not have a place to store frozen-food items. This is during the first night of conferences.

Lucky 7’s Team Math During October, 7th grade math will continue work with fractions and decimals. Our next unit will begin our study of algebra and will involve solving equations and inequalities. Remind students to show their work on all their homework and to refer to their notes if they have questions about the steps required for each problem. To be able to fully participate in math class, students will need their fully-stocked binder every day. This includes paper, pencils, a dry erase marker, highlighter, note spiral, and agenda. Please review their agenda daily so you know which assignments are to be completed at home. Parents should sign the agenda once a week. Science Geology Rocks!!!!! 7th grade science will be diving into the center of the earth!!! We will be exploring the different layers of the planet and how they work. The kids will investigate the processes of rock formation and plate tectonics. We will also be looking at the rock cycle and how all the different rocks are formed. Students will need their binders, paper and pencils to take notes. The students will be working in small groups and will have a few independent assignments. As long as the students are productive there will be no homework. All assignments should be finished during class time. Social Studies: 7th grade social studies is focused on world geography, understanding the physical world and how people interact with it and each other. Students will also be working on note taking, reading charts and graphs, and critical thinking. Students will need to have their binder with paper and pencil as well as their textbook. Students will have homework usually once a week but I will give plenty of time to get the work done. Language Arts: Language Arts classes will be challenging their students to investigate the concept of courage through reading a variety of literature and informational texts. The close reading selection is, “The Charge of the Light Brigade” by Alfred Lloyd Tennyson. At the end of the unit students will be completing a performance demonstration about courage. SCHOOLWIDE BINDERS: EVERY student at Robinson Middle School will be learning strategies to help build organization. Below are the materials needed for the Robinson Binder: 3-inch, 3-ring binder (no smaller than 3 inches) Please do not purchase zipper binders—they rarely have 3-inch rings 1 set of tabbed dividers 3-ring pencil pouch Several packages of College-ruled loose-leaf paper* Several packages of pencils* Large erasers Blue and black pens One package of thin highlighters One package of thin dry erase markers *these supplies frequently need to be replenished during the school year; it might be helpful to purchase extras to store until they are needed

8th Grade All Stars Team Conferences are quickly approaching and we encourage ALL parents to participate. Information will be sent out soon for you to schedule an appointment with your child’s teachers. Please make every effort to come by the school and see how well your child is doing in class. Conferences are scheduled for Tuesday, October. 25, Thursday and Friday, October 27th and 28th. We look forward to meeting with each of you. SCIENCE: Students will have a Sound & Light textbook checked out to them during the week of September 19. They are responsible for bringing the book to class with them daily along with their science spiral. We still have students that have not taken their safety contract home and completed it with their parents. Students that don’t have a safety contract on file, will not be allowed to participate in activities. An alternate assignment will be given. SOCIAL STUDIEDS: 8th graders are studying the development of the 13 British Colonies. We are focusing on the growth of the Colonies and the profitability they provided for England. Students are focusing on location of the Colonies and the correct spelling. We will continue with the Colonies through-out October and follow the path/s that led to the American Revolution. We will also be starting our Winter Semester Data Based Question (DBQ). Our DBQ is a district writing assessment and must be conducted once a semester. Lastly, we will talk about the Presidential Election. We will look at all the candidates and their views on political issues. We have A LOT of exciting topics to discuss in 8th grade. A FEW THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW:
3:50: Check in: You need to have a pass from a teacher or administrator to enter after 3:50. Please take care of your per-sonal business before you check in. Locker, restroom, drinks ect.
If you do not have any homework to work on, YOU MUST have a book to read to reach your 25 Book Campaign goal.
3:50-3:55: ASP news of the day
3:55-4:15: Snack time
4:15-4:55: Home work time or reading a book
5:00-5:30: Restroom/Activity time
5:30: pick up time or bus time (please tell your ride that the program ends AT 5:30) and to please be here at that time.
MONDAYS: this is our off campus field trip day: You have to attend 2 or more days in order to go on the field trip. Attendees will be picked randomly by number drawings.
All Robinson school rules apply: This means NO ELECTRONIC DEVICES of any kind. WPS District policy will be enforced.

After School Program Rules
All school rules are in effect throughout the After School Program and events. A student must have a completed and signed permission slip turned in to participate in any of the After School Pro-
gram activities. Doors to the After School Program are locked once school is over and the building has cleared. Students may not leave the After School Program early unless arrangements have been made with the Site Coordi-
nator or a parent/guardian picks them up. If a student leaves before the After School Program is over without permission from the Site Coordinator, that stu-
dent is not allowed to come back to After School Program for a week (four After School Program days). Once a student is in an activity, they must stay in that activity for the remainder of that day. If an off-campus behavior problem occurs, the student will not be allowed to go to that activity the next time. If a 2nd
behavior problem occurs off-campus with the same student, this student will not be allowed to go on any of the re-maining field trips during that semester.
Disrespect, foul language, and intolerable behavior will not be allowed. 1st incident - receive a warning 2nd incident - time out from the activity the student is participating in 3rd incident - the student will not be allowed back to the After School Program for the rest of the semester.
