Principals Report – Term 2, Week 4 – 2019

Election Day

What a busy day we had last Saturday serving sausages and bacon/egg rolls to all the voters coming to Woolooware. Thank you to our wonderful team of volunteers who came on the day to help. I am told that this was a fantastic community-building and fundraising event!

NAPLAN

Over the past two weeks, students in Years 3 and 5 have completed their NAPLAN assessments. This year we again completed the NAPLAN Online assessments. Students completed all of their assessment online (with the exception of Year 3 writing) and proved to be effective, though a little challenging at times.

You may have heard in the media that there were some technical difficulties with the Year 5 NAPLAN Writing Assessment conducted on Tuesday 14 May across the state. This meant that some students experienced ‘time-outs’ and disruptions to the online test. At Woolooware we were able to mitigate these disruptions by providing additional time to affected students, thereby alleviating the need for the re-sit that has been made available to some other schools. The test administrators at school and externally are confident that our students have not been disadvantaged in any way.

I would like to thank our Year 3 and 5 teachers for supporting students through this assessment and particularly thank Miss Greenstein who has coordinated the assessment at WPS. Results will be available later this year.

Staffing News

Kinder Green – Miss Selman will be commencing her maternity leave in week 6. This means that next week will be her last week at WPS. Miss Amy Foley will be replacing Miss Selman and we welcome Miss Foley to Woolooware.

2D – Mrs Deacon will be taking leave to travel with her family in the second half of the year. Miss Emily Bell will be taking 2D during this time.

I am very fortunate to have the opportunity to travel to England for 3 weeks from next Friday (31 May). Mrs Cleary will be the relieving principal during my leave period.

Canteen

Woolooware Public School relies on the assistance of parents, grandparents and friends to assist in our school run canteen. Recently is has been difficult to find regular volunteers and our Canteen Managers, Melissa and Bianca have had to work alone to ensure that our children all receive their lunch orders.

Unfortunately without volunteers we may have to consider closing the canteen on certain days each week. This is not something that we want to do as we feel that our school canteen provides a wonderful service to all of our families.

If you would like to volunteer we would love to hear from you. Usually the volunteers start around 9.00am and finish at 12.30pm. You can pick a day a week a day a month or even a day a term all we ask is that you are reliable.

Congratulations to Kirra S who made the Sydney East Netball Team and will compete in Orange next term Cyber Safety Talk at WPS

On Tuesday the 4th of June Senior Constable Deb Wilson will be coming to speak with the parents and Stage 2 and 3 students about Cyber Safety.

Constable Wilson has many years of experience with students, and is a expert on" how to stay smart online ".

She will also be doing a presentation to the parents on being Cyber Smart .This is an excellent seminar and all parents are encouraged to attend.
