THEATRESPORTS UPDATE

On Wednesday 10th June, the Year 9 TheatreSports team competed at Tara Anglican College in the

TheatreSports semi-final. The competition was fierce with schools from across the state vying for a position in

the finals at The Enmore Theatre. Our team, consisting of Cristian Triulzi-McNee, Galan Banfield, George

Brooks, Hamish Lewis, Stefan Pekar and Shaiden Tran from the Year 9 Elective Drama class, have rehearsed

rigorously to hone their skills to compete at this level. Although they have not made it through to the final,

they represented Ashfield Boys High School proudly, displaying humour, great sportsmanship and

confidence. The skills that they have developed will assist them in all areas of their schooling and in life.

Congratulations to Ms Whitting, Mr Tyler and Mr Kang who have worked diligently to develop and support

the team. Thank you to the parents and friends of the students involved for their support.

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT continued

We are seeking help from 16 (sixteen) parents with sons in Years 7/ 8 and Year 11/ 12 to take part in a focus group next week. The focus group will only take an hour and will be run by an independent market research company engaged by the Department of Education. The school will not be able to identify any responses from parents. This market research is also being undertaken across three local Primary schools and in the wider community. If you would like to be part of the focus groups we would really appreciate your thoughts. The focus groups will be held at 5pm on Thursday 18th June. Afternoon tea will be providing to all participants. Please email the school at [email protected] or call and leave your RSVP on 9798 6620. We would really appreciate your help with this so that we can improve our practice as a school.

This evening will provide you with important information about the HSC, courses and different pathways. The subject selection evening will be held on Tuesday 23rd June from 7pm-8pm. A hard copy note will be sent home with your son tomorrow to confirm your attendance. We will also send an email to all parents with a copy of this note. We urge you to attend this event with your son as it is an important step in his education and progress towards the HSC.

THE MONTY PRYOR VISIT

On Monday Year 7 had a once in a lifetime comedy experience, brought to them by renowned Indigenous writer best known as a storyteller and as the inaugural Australian Children's Laureate Boori Monty Pryor. He was very humorous and thoroughly engaged the students. He informed us about the books he had published, in a very funny manner and told us about some of the jokes in his books. We learnt some very important life lessons, for example, don’t push your sisters onto a rose bush! Monty talked about his Australian bestseller My Girragundji, which is in the process of being adapted into a film. The students were really engaged throughout his monologue. We were dismissed with an aching stomach due to Monty’s jokes. He also played a native instrument called a yiggi yiggi which was a type of didgeridoo and he also showed us some basics of how to play it.

Overall it was great and memorable experience. Written by Wali Mohammed and Fahim Mustafa of 7A

Science in Focus Excursion to UTS

Last Tuesday a lucky group of Year 10 students attended the Science in Focus Outreach program hosted by

University of Technology Sydney (UTS) accompanied by Mrs El-Rakshy & Ms Boshell.

The day started with an introduction in one of the new, bright green lecture theatres adorned with conical flasks over the ceiling lights, of the new sustainable building at UTS. Inside this building the laboratories are said to be ‘living, breathing laboratories, embedded with wireless sensors to monitor temperature, air quality, noise, and dust particles’. Many students commented how intriguing the theatre was and made many references to Shrek on sight of the room - mainly due to the green walls and the conical flask light features which resembled Shrek’s ears. We returned here throughout the day for a mini-lecture on bacteria and how a bacterium affects and spreads diseases

After the introduction the students participated in workshops that focussed on Microbiology, Forensic

Science and Physics. This was a taste of what a first year undergraduate Science student at UTS would do.

At the Micro-biology Lab, students wore lab coats and tested a synthetic sample of urine for certain

compounds to determine if the ‘patient’ had diabetes. Salmonella Bacteria from a chicken sample was also

prepared and observed under a microscope. The post-graduate host then spoke with the students about

diseases and pathogenic substances and what micro-biology research is like.

The applied Physics workshop involved the students in problem solving to make a thermoelectric generator

that had the highest voltage output. The group which had the highest voltage won a water flask each.

The Forensics Lab workshop allowed students to learn about (and make their own!) finger printing, foot

printing and types of blood splatter.

At the conclusion of the day the UTS hosts each in turn spoke about their areas of study in Science, and

also how they came to their own decisions about what they wanted to study at University whilst they were

in high school. A lot of our students were also able to ask about University ‘life’ and how they themselves

can use their passions to help them decide what subjects to study in senior school. A lot of the students

gained valuable advice from the UTS students and the post-graduates.

The students all spoke highly of the excursion and many who felt undecided on future paths were able to

grasp what university was like, and some even felt that they were able to readily decide on what tertiary

path they want embark on after they leave high school.
