PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Dwayne Hopwood Principal

It has been wonderful to see the boys being recognised for their successes in some very different areas this week. On Wednesday Joseph Demasi, one of our 2016 Prefects, was awarded one of the few and prestigious scholarships by the Public Education Foundation. Joseph was presented with the scholarships at a ceremony at Sydney Town Hall. The scholarships are highly competitive and are presented to students who demonstrate a commitment to education and the values of public education. Joseph has chosen to follow his passion for cooking, developed at home with his mum and at school through his study of Hospitality, and is undertaking an apprenticeship in commercial cookery. His aim is to combine this study with his entrepreneurial skill and open his own business. I can’t think of a more deserving recipient. In a very different area of success, Tyler Li of Year 12 was asked to be part of a panel on SBS this week. Tyler is part of our Chinese debating team, who debate in Mandarin. He so impressed the judges that SBS asked him to speak about his experiences. There is a more detailed report on this later in Ashtag. The Athletics Carnival is on Monday. If the weather or oval conditions require the carnival to be cancelled this will be notified on the school website Sunday evening.

YEAR 7 MUSIC ON BEAT

Students in 7 Rose studied the parts of the drum-kit and learned how to play the standard rock beat pattern. They worked well with their peers and individually to master the coordination and correct drumming technique. Some of the students in 7 Rose receive instrumental tutoring and demonstrated their wonderful drumming skills to the class. Year 7 students across all teams will be assessed throughout Term 2 on the keyboard, guitar and drum-kit. Drumming tuition is offered at Ashfield Boys High School to interested students. For more Information, please speak to Mr Pieterse.

VARIATION OF ROUTINE: PUTTING THE PHONES ON HOLD

The mathematics of Direct and Inverse Variation is used by all in everyday life; be it in counting costs for bulk buying, planning for parties or estimating the time required to finish homework. Some Year 12 students made an honest appraisal of themselves in terms of the time spent studying or on phones and made estimates of the impact either activity would have on their marks. Their conclusions were:

"The improvement in school results is directly proportional to time used for studying (up to a limit) but inversely proportional to the time spent on phones (beyond a limit)." So I hope they are going to be phone smart about their smart phones.

Storms, magic and the legacy of Shakespeare

What do we all have in common? Our humanity; according to Shakespeare. Year 12 Advanced had the opportunity to attend Sport for Jove’s production of The Tempest and HSC symposium as part of their study of Discovery. The theatre experience was compelling and enjoyed by the boys. The comedic moments and a 21st century take on the wedding scene were exceptional as were the more serious moments of the play. The staging of the play and the changing of male roles to female roles was all part of the theatrical experience and the focus of some of the discussion at the symposium. Damien Ryan who directed the play and was Prospero, the main role, took students through his interpretation of the play and its link to their study of Discovery. It was an opportunity for students to hear the actors discuss why they played the characters in a particular way. This is what some of our boys had to say: I admired the way that each character in the play represents an external force of nature The production gave me a new level of understanding and a look at the play from a different perspective. The deconstruction of language in the Symposium taught me how the distinction of syntax between prose and verse served to reflect the differing classes, educational standings and statuses of characters within the play. The production was successful in making The Tempest more memorable and relatable; the symposium was more enlightening in developing an appreciation of Shakespeare's artistry.

Speaking Plainly

Last Friday our school hosted the first round of the Plain English Competition and all speakers showed a talent for public speaking. This is a speaking competition for senior students from government and non-government schools. Competition was fierce as competitors had to prepare an eight minute speech on a topic of their choice and a three minute impromptu with three minutes preparation time. Our representatives, Kishan Kharka and Mohamad Elzein from Year 11 were excellent in their prepared speech, exploring issues to do with the environment and big game hunting. Their delivery was very strong. The challenging task was the impromptu and this was the decider for the adjudicator. Although we did not make it to the next round we congratulate Sydney Girls High, St Vincents College and Newington on making it to the next round. A good day was had by all and it was great to have the best morning tea ever, thanks to Ms Henry and to meet staff and students from other schools.

Year 9 has been investigating how to construct series and parallel circuits. Series circuits are

found in Christmas tree lights. Parallel circuits are found in your house powering the lights in

different rooms. Hopefully, there are some budding electrical engineers in their midst.

YEAR 12 GROUP PERFORMANCE WORKSHOP

On Tuesday 9th May, the Year 12 Drama class together with the Year 12 class from Canterbury

Girls High School took part in a Group Performance Masterclass with Stefo and Tom from Zeal

Theatre. The students work-shopped different ideas e.g. the burial and the sandpit, coupled with

an emotion, to form a playbuilt performance. They worked on transitions between scenes and

changing characters. It was amazing what they were able to come up with in a very short time. It

was an enjoyable afternoon for all with many skills learnt and new techniques to experiment

with.

CHINESE DEBATING

Nine students from Years 10 to 12 including myself were selected to represent Ashfield Boys High School in New South Wales Schools Chinese Debating Championship. This program began on 26th March where we went to a debating introduction seminar held in the University of Sydney. We were also very honoured to meet our coach Eric Yang that day. For the next month, our team members have met up several times in public places to discuss, train and even practise debates with other schools which include Strathfield Girls High School and Chatswood High School. It has been a very fun and joyful experience. Unfortunately, we lost our first debate against St Marouns College on 6th May. Even though we won the second debate against The King’s School, we were not able to enter the second round. Nonetheless, all students who participated in this event believe that this has been an unforgettable experience. If we have a chance again next year, we would all be delighted to participate again. In addition, due to his excellent performances, Tyler Li is invited to participate in an event organised by SBS radio.

Caelen wrong-foots the keeper and defence to score despite a valiant attempt by the fullback. 1

The Ashfield attack was relentless while the defence proved to be a brick wall.

Clockwise from above: AJ takes the attack past the defence, outmanoeuvres the Keeper, and then calmly slots home the goal. 2 nil - Ashfield! A final attempt on the whistle unfortunately hit the crossbar. Next game: Early June v Freshwater HS at Cromer Park.
