THE GIANT
ITEM NEEDED: A microphone
CHARACTER BREAKDOWN: 3M
CHARACTERS: Gene- A fight announcerGoliathThe Colonel- Goliath’s manager
Gene is on stage at center.
GENE: All right, we are just minutes away from the match up everybody’s been waiting for. It’s been several weeks since the Philistines arrived in Israel, and at long last, the champion has a challenger. Oh, here comes the champion now to talk about this fight.
Goliath enters with the Colonel.
GENE: Giant Goliath, and his manager the Colonel. Colonel, is your man ready for this fight?
COLONEL: Are we ready? We’ve been ready! We’ve been waiting weeks for one of these Miserable-ites to come out and face the giant. He’s ready, he’s hungry, and he’s gonna crush his opponent.
GENE: I think we were all expecting maybe one of the elite guard from King Saul’s army to take up the challenge, but instead it’s a young shepherd boy. Goliath, what are your thoughts?

GOLIATH: Well let me tell you something, Mean Gene, I don’t care if it’s a shepherd, a soldier, or a whole bunch of soldiers, I’m here for a fight, and there’s nothing these Israelites can throw at me that I can’t handle.
COLONEL: Just look at the size of this man! His sword is giant, his shield is giant, his spear is giant. His armor. His helmet. He’s a giant, Mean Gene! Do you think a little shepherd boy can defeat a giant?
GENE: As I understand it, this shepherd boy has already killed a few wolves and lions while defending his flocks.
COLONEL: That don’t matter a hill of beans, Mean Gene! This is war! This ain’t no ani-mal, this is a lean, mean fighting machine!
GENE: From what I understand, the boy David isn’t even wearing armor. He’s got a sling shot and a bag of rocks.
Goliath laughs.
GENE: And he’s counting on the Lord to give him strength.
COLONEL: Wait! Did you say, the Lord?
GENE: That’s right, the same Lord that gave Samson his strength. The one who crum-bled the walls of Jericho. The one who saved Israel from the wicked Pharaoh of Egypt.
GOLIATH: All I can say is “good luck!”
COLONEL: Goliath, buddy, this is no laughing matter. We’ve gotta get you out of there! If the Lord is on that kid’s side—
GOLIATH: Get out of my way, Colonel! I’m gonna crush that kid!
Goliath exits.
COLONEL: Goliath, no! You’re throwing your life away! Think about your family! Think about your endorsements! And what about me??

ITEMS NEEDED: A glass of milk and a glass of soda
There are two beverages here in front of me. Which one of these is going to give you strong bones?
Which one of these is going to make you stronger?
Which one of these is healthier for you?
Sodas are nothing but flavor and sugar. It’s true! There’s no nutritional value to soda whatsoever. Milk, on the other hand, has vitamins and nutrients that a growing body needs.
When you’re young and still growing it’s important to drink milk, eat good fruits and veg-etables, and limit the junk. The more you eat right, the better shape you will be in as an adult. You’ll be healthier, and you’ll be stronger.
When it comes to matters of the Spirit, we have a different source of strength. We have God. When life is challenging, God is there. When we need extra strength to face our problems, God gives us that strength.
God can give us strength to face giants, or just strength to make it through a bad day. When you need a little extra strength in your day, go to God. Pray for his Spirit to give you strength. God will give you all you need.

BOTTOM LINE: God gives us strength we never knew we had.
OBJECTIVE: Kids will learn God is the source of our strength. KEY PASSAGE: 1 Samuel 17:12-50, David & Goliath
INTROToday we get to the most exciting, most popular, most beloved kid story in the Bible. This is the one that everyone, even kids who have never been to church, have heard. It’s the inspiration behind a hundred other stories. It’s the story that lends its name to any sporting competition that pits a big underdog against a mighty champion. It’s the story of David and Goliath.
If there’s any story that should give us confidence that kids can do great things, it’s Da-vid and Goliath. Every kid has had a dream that he could do something like David. We long for the day we can beat our Mom or Dad at basketball, or checkers, or our favorite board game. It’s the challenge that keeps us coming back for more, hoping that this will be the one time we get to beat the big guy.
David and Goliath is the reason we cheer for the underdogs during March Madness. We believe that a number fifteen seed can beat a number two seed. We believe it be-cause we’ve seen it happen. We believe it because of David and Goliath.
David’s story shows us that God can give us strength to beat a giant. Let’s read the story together and see just how we can find the same strength David found.
READ 1 SAMUEL 17:12-50

KIDS OF THE BIBLE: DAVID
MAIN POINTThis story has the hand of God all over it. It begins with a giant issuing a challenge to the children of God, the army of Israel. If one man can step forward and defeat Goliath, the Philistines will surrender. But who would have the courage to fight a giant?
None of Saul’s men dared to take on Goliath. He was too big, and his reputation in battle was widely known. Goliath’s size made him an intimidating foe for any man. Even King Saul, who was a pretty tough guy, stayed silent.
Then David arrived on the scene. David was too young to serve in the army. He was still living at home with his parents, tending their sheep. David was a pretty good shot with a sling, having killed lions and wolves, but size wise he was still no match for Goli-ath.
David took up Goliath’s challenge because the giant dared to insult God. David knew that God would give him the strength to defeat the giant. He knew because he knew God would not stand to be mocked. David took down the giant and saved his people because God gave him strength.
DRIVE IT HOMEIt’s not very likely that any of us will face a giant like Goliath this week, but each of us will face challenges. Some of you may have problems with a bully, not one as big as Goliath, but a big problem nonetheless. Who will give you strength to stand up for your-self when that bully shows up this week?
Some of you may have another kind of challenge. Maybe it’s a hard test. Maybe it’s a problem at home. Maybe it’s an illness. Maybe you just end up having a really terrible day. Who will give you the strength you need to keep going? Who will give you strength of body and mind when all you want to do is quit?
The same God who gave David his strength. That’s who!
It doesn’t matter how young you are. We are all going to face challenges. We’re going to face giants and problems bigger than we are. When those problems come, God will be there. He will not leave us or abandon us. He will give us courage to stand strong and strength to overcome.
God is the strength we need to get through bad days. He’s the strength you’ll need to face kids who push you down. He will continue to give you strength as you grow older and face even bigger challenges. He will always be there, and he will always be your strength.
