Flowers for Mother’s Day benefited the Feed My Starving
Children Event that is coming up in July.
Women of the ELCA Mother’s Day Event On Saturday, May 3rd, the Women of the ELCA
celebrated Mother’s Day with an interactive puppet
show for children of ALL ages and...ICE CREAM, of
course.
Puppet Show Sandy Oudenhoven was the puppeteer for the
Women’s event for Mother’s Day. Looks like the
kids were having a great time!!
Landscaping around PoP Landscaping has begun around Prince of
Peace which is all part of the remodeling
that took place last summer. Because of the
cool, wet spring, the landscapers were able
to get their work done at PoP when it
FINALLY warmed up some.

Be Curious!
Then [Jesus] said to the man, “stretch out your hand.” And the man stretched it out, and it was restored . . . - Matthew 12:13
This little healing story is packed away between much larger and more important stories of Jesus’ earthly
ministry. The healing of the withered hand is not the issue. The issue is that Jesus has authority to heal on the Sabbath
day. But putting aside all the commotion and thunder between Jesus and his enemies on this point, I have wondered
about that obscure man with the hand that didn’t work. He’s present in Scripture for only a moment’s flash, and then
he disappears again.
Well, what of this man? There he is just minding his own business on a fine Saturday afternoon when he
witnesses the discussion about the Sabbath that Jesus was having with others. With his curiosity aroused, the man
gets himself in such a position that he can watch and hear what’s going on. It’s then that he catches Jesus’ eye.
Suddenly he’s an innocent bystander no longer! Jesus calls him to come forward, and every eye is upon him. Now he’s
on center stage. Curiosity is said to have killed a cat, and this man could testify to that belief! What was a nice
afternoon, now becomes a deadly quarrel.
Jesus gives the command, “Stretch out your hand,” and the miracle happens. The man’s new condition
becomes living proof of Jesus’ power. But did that healing bring rejoicing or even an end to the argument? No. The
Pharisees grumpily steal away and plan to get Jesus the next time.
The lesson here is that there are no innocent bystanders in this feud between Jesus and the others. The man
with the withered hand isn’t a bystander, and neither are we. Out of his deep, insatiable love for us, Jesus might just
choose to use us. He may pick us out of the crowd for some special task. “Stretch out your hand,” he may say, and he
may be asking for your help. The best way to find out is to be in the presence of God. See him out, and God will use
you! If we go in a positive way, expecting Christ to use us, then we have opened up
ourselves to his possibilities. Like the nameless man with the withered hand, be curious!
See You in Church!
Pastor Gary J. Nokleberg

Our New Bishop—Gerald Mansholt Several hundred ELCA delegates in the East-Central Synod of Wisconsin
gathered last month at the K-I Center in Green Bay to elect a new bishop.
Bishop Gerald Mansholt, who already was serving the Synod as Interim Bishop,
was elected on the fifth ballot. Prince of Peace’s delegates to the Synod
Assembly were David Erickson, Richard and Nadine Gade, and the pastors.
Bishop Mansholt comes to us from the Central States Synod (Missouri and
Kansas) where he served as bishop. Our prayers are with our new bishop and
his wife, Anita, as he begins his responsibilities on July 1. He will be installed as
bishop by Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton in September.

June is Personal Care Kit Month When natural disaster strikes or political conflict flares, families often have
little chance to gather their belongings before fleeing the danger. They
arrive in a refugee camp or other place of safety scared, vulnerable and
dirty from the travel. The simple items included in a Personal Care Kit allow
them to wash away the dirt and sweat, with the fresh scent of soap and the
softness of a towel as reminders of someone’s care and concern for them
in their plight.
Please consider bringing the items mentioned below to church with you
some Sunday in June. This year we didn’t do “Baskets of Promise” during
Lent, so lets be generous NOW.
The items needed are:
Light weight bath-size towels (maximum 52” X 27”), dark color
recommended
Bath-size bars (4 to 5 oz.) of soap, any brand, in original wrapping
Metal nail clippers (attached file optional)
Sturdy combs (no picks or fine toothed combs)
Items may be put on the white rack in the storage room behind the library.
If you prefer to give a monetary donation, please make checks payable to
WELCA, noting LWR Kits, and send to Jeannine Bultman, W6072
Cornflower Drive, Appleton, WI 54915. Questions? Call Lorraine Krenz at
993-1880. Thank you for your support.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Box Top Labels Thanks for saving the box-top labels!
Please continue to save them. The
collection box is located above the
mailboxes in the hallway by the
Music Office. We NO longer accept milk caps or
soup labels, JUST box tops.
Christmas in August Looking for a worthwhile project to dig into? Christmas in
August is right around the corner. For those of you not
familiar with Christmas In August, this program was
organized 19 years ago as a way for families to
experience and teach the joy of giving while at the
same time, providing a needed service in the
community. This project partners Social Concern
Ministry and Outagamie County Health and Human Services to
provide 100 area K though 8th grade children with new jeans t-
shirt, sweatshirt, haircuts and shoes so that they can start the fall
school year looking good and feeling good about themselves.
Take the opportunity to shop with your children or grandchildren
knowing that the clothes they are picking out will make less
fortunate children excited to go back to school. This worthwhile
project cannot be successful without your help and active
participation. Keep an eye out for the Christmas trees in the
entryways in late June. Please take an ornament or two, purchase
the item and place it back in the boxes provided with the
ornament attached by Sunday, August 10th OR take a cash
envelope and place it in the collection plate during any service.
Call or email Nette Kimball 851-4032, [email protected] if
you have any questions.
Combined Bible Study Join the Women of the ELCA for the combined Bible
study which will be led by Pastor Gary on
Wednesday, June 11 at 6:30 p.m. There will be
cake, cookies and punch following the Bible study.
This will be Pastor Gary’s last time for our studies.
We hope to see you there.

Spiritual Gift Monthly Spotlight—Discernment There are different kinds of gifts, but the same spirit. There are
different kinds of service, but the same spirit. There are
different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different
kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men.
Every Christian is a minister! Every Christian is gifted for
ministry! The Holy Spirit is God’s living presence in Prince of
Peace Lutheran Church, and he bestows spiritual gifts on all
members, enabling us to minister through the
church and our daily work. Discernment - the gift that motivates a believer
to see God’s will and purpose and apply that
understanding to individual and congregational
situations.

Where was God in your Life this month?
Where will God be in your life this summer?
Did God speak words of comfort to you during a difficult time? Did his
mercy fill your heart when you needed forgiveness? Did you really feel
the presence of Jesus in communion? Was his body and blood alive
for you? Did you find time to ponder God’s wisdom in the Bible? Did a
Gospel reading or sermon speak directly to you?
Did you say a quick prayer for a parking space and someone pulled
out of one right in front of you? Did you feel him in your heart when
you were talking to a friend or family member with cancer? Did you
see God in the smile of a child when you praised him for job well
done? Was God in a sunset or the beauty of a colorful flowering crab
apple tree? Did you thank him? Was God there when you donated
quarters to the Feed My Starving Children’s campaign? How about
when you wrote a check to your favorite charity? Was God there in
your prayers for the victims of our country’s weather disasters this
year?
Did he stir up the spirit in you? Did he move you to do something new
or different? Did he move you to try the same old thing in a new way or
to look at the old with new eyes? Did you look for God in your life? Did
you look for God in others?
Where will God be in your life this summer? God asks that you call
upon him and seek him in prayer. Will you do that?
Say Cheese! Smile! and Click! We need your new or updated digital picture for the Fall Telephone
Directory! Please submit a family or individual photo taken sometime
this summer or before September 5th. We are looking for pictures of
you and your family doing what you do best! Whether you are into
hiking or biking, traveling or cooking, Milwaukee Brewers or
volunteering, attending a special event or sitting with your favorite pet,
we want a picture of YOU!
Photos can be sent electronically through email to Brigetta Wingender
ebawing@tds or dropped off at the office (attention – Cindy Romnek)
in an envelope with your name and phone number, as well as all of the
people in the photo. (Photos will be scanned and returned.) Our goal is
to have as many individual and family photos as we can by September
5th. If you or your family are not able to submit a photo, we can take a
photo of you at church. If you would like more information, please
contact Cindy Romnek (739-5255) or Brigetta Wingender.
An updated summer telephone directory will be out for pick-up by June
15th.
Helping Hands Outreach How can we reach out to one another as
Christians this summer? Ask yourself what can
we do for one another? Helping Hands is a great
outreach to provide connections among our
fellow members! Remember the next time you
or someone is in need, call one of the Helping
Hands leaders. Reach out and touch someone!

CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS/BUILDING FUND Important Update
It was announced at the Spring Congregational Meeting on May 18 that giving to the Capital
Improvements/Building Fund had dropped off significantly. As we enter the summer
months, only 76% of the pledged funds for January-April have been received. The
Stewardship Ministry would like to heartily thank you for your faithful giving to the
improvements made to our church home. The changes were needed, and we now enjoy
them. Please check your records of giving to the Capital Improvements/Building Fund so
that we can stay current in paying off our debt. Thank you!
