Howdy OC’ers

It’s been quite a spell of warm weather lately. The Mountains are preserving what they can, but snow is coming. January and February are always the best months for SNOW! Pay no attention to the weather reports around here for skiing on the weekends. Many of the warm weeks and weekends we have had here have been great skiing for many around the mountains. I went to Hunter Mt. on Jan 13, and it wasn’t the greatest day, but it’s always better than working. So get out and do some runs. I had never

been to Hunter. I ran into Jeff Kenton, who was there training for the day and discovered another great Northeast mountain. Just a reminder to see Jeff about signing up for the February 23 Private Lesson Day at Bromley.

Thanks to Fred Haefeli, Aline Welch and Erin O’Brien for a really well attended Committee Fair. I hope lots of members and new members are

getting ready to volunteer their time to help out this wonderful Club. Did you know we have 27 standing committees, from A&E that organizes our parties to the John R. Cooke Memorial Award committee that gives out the Applicant of the Year award? We have 3 award committees that confer the Treasurer’s Cup (Robert P. Mahoney Memorial Trophy, most outstanding, long term member), the President’s Cup for OC Spirit Award and the John R Cooke Memorial

Award (outstanding Applicant of the Year). Look around and note who is there helping out and send in your suggestions to me. I will distribute your nominations to the correct committee. In the spring, A&E will organize our installation event at which these awards are given out.

The Taos crew is having a blast with Mike, Julie and Jenna. Thank you to Larry and Natalie for their hard work.

Its peak season now! Lets all keep doing a snow dance to keep the conditions of the mountains in great shape.

The Committee Fair was on January 9th and we had a great turnout. There was over $2700 worth of raffles. Fred

reached out to various vendors and spent many hours acquiring them so please thank him when you see him. Arline and all the Committee Heads also worked very hard and I want to personally thank them.

If you have extra time we still need volunteers.. We will need more volunteers for our Membership Committee.

The Smugglers Notch trip was also this month, just in time for the impending snow storm (this weekend as I write this). Hopefully they had pillows of POW to wake up to on Saturday

morning. Thank you to Eileen and Jeremy for your effort in running this trip. Also, the New Hampshire trip ran without a hitch. Thank you to Crystal for all your dedication in making that trip a Success.

February features the legendary Sunday River trip. I am a little bummed that I won’t be tearing up the River with Taylor this year after the famed “off the map tour” he gave a few of us last year. Sunday River is holding strong through this weather with 85 trails and with the storm this weekend, the outlook is good. That is always a great trip at a great price. Big White, which Willy Welch and myself are co-leading, is leaving in February which should be a blast eh! Fortunately for us, British Columbia is getting steady snow storms, so we should be in for a treat. Currently, it has snowed 34” in the past 7 days ( yes inches - I did the conversion from centimeters), and there are 115 of 116 trails open. Fixing to be a great time!

Pray for Snow and keep up the dances. We are skiing/riding our hearts out!!!!

As I write this, we just had a phenomenal weekend of Alpine buses, (Matin Luther King Weekend). We ran 5 buses over the three day weekend. Keep it up! We are in the middle of the season and the snow is only getting better (after an admittedly slow start). The slopes seem to be shaping up. Get out and ski.

Trips are selling quickly. There are still a lot of slots available. Check out the schedule for more details. Smugs just returned, great job by the Family Committee (Jeremy Miller and Eileen Finn-LeMatty) for another fantastic trip. I got rave reviews from the

group that went to Taos, New Mexico. Thanks to Larry and Natalie DelliVeneri for a great job. Next to go is the New Hampshire, one of my favorites.

Racers Ready - three races scheduled, and will be history when you get this article, details next month. We are pushing participation by our Snow Board members and we’ll report how they do .

Lots more to come. Bob Priest is setting up a great Cross-Country bus schedule. The Snow is out there and the conditions have improved, so get out and ski. I plan on jumping on one of the buses soon and I will see you on the bus.

The Snow is on the ground; it’s time to get out and enjoy the Winter.

Hopefully the snow gods have got it right for the rest of the Winter. The end of December and beginning of January has been a bust as far as white stuff. Maple Ski Ridge special is on for Wednesday - Friday 3 to

9 PM, as a great value option for Family skiing during the week. The Smugglers Notch trip, Jan 17th -20th, was a huge success once again, filling 19 condos with 106 people in the group, not the record number of people of last year,

• Suggestion Box. Box will be available at every meeting. Each suggestion will be reviewed and forwarded to the Board as appropriate. There is also an email address: ([email protected]) which will forward suggestions to the appropriate committee.

• Ski Instruction:

• On-the-snow training for instructors is now at Catamount.

• New instructor training is at Maple Ridge

• Races scheduled are: Feb 1 at West Mountain (2 races) [Race for $30 which includes all-day lift and lunch]

• NYCDSC –

• January is “Learn to Ski” month. Present a ‘lessons’ receipt to Skis.com and get a $50 toward a purchase on that website.

• Jiminy Peak has a $20 twilight ski pass for designated days in January, February and March. Check out their website

• Allowing guests on OC ski trips in some instances was discussed as follows:

• Family and other trips allow guests with a per day membership fee.

• It would encourage members to participate if they could bring a spouse or friend.

• Complete quotas required to get comps which reduces pricing for the Club.

• May not be fair to other members who may not commit to a trip early.

• Provides for parity between Family and Regular ski trips.

• Trips Chair can make exceptions.

• Sign ups for Group Sessions are normally on the bus on the way to the mountain.

• Prior arrangements are suggested for 1st time skier & all snowboard , telemark & family sessions

• If you have equipment questions,talk to one of us before you buy or rent.

• This is a great way to meet new friends of similar ability.
