The rural poor can neither migrate to the urban areas nor afford the very high fee charged in thecorporate and private schools. Hence any new proposals in the education sector should improve

the chances for the rural poor to have a good education on par with their urban counter parts intheir villages themselves.

It is well known that the education system in India is not at the satisfactory levels. Instead ofconfusing the students with some new proposals, it is advisable to improve the existing facilities.

The following are the various problems in government schools and colleges in India in semiurban areas and rural areas in particular.

In most of the government schools, science fairs, science exhibitions, educational fairs, seminars, workshops, etc seem to have never been conducted. Such a disparity among the authorities will

lead to acquiring only the theoretical knowledge by the innocent children. There are no properscience practical labs for computer science, biology, chemistry, physics, etc in the schools run by

    the government.

The much publicised mid day meal scheme meant to reduce drop out rates in schools seems to benot yielding the desired results. This is due to misappropriation of funds meant for the scheme,

mismanagement, lack of seriousness among the implementing authorities, diversion of funds, lack of awareness among the parents of poor children, etc. According to some reports, the quality

of the food served is inferior.

For many children, the hostel life is one of the highly miserable experiences.

In this globalised era, when many rich and fortunate urban children are becoming technologically

savvy, their rural counter parts do not know much about even the computers!.

    Poor infrastructure:

Most of the government schools do not have basic infrastructure like strong school building, class rooms, black boards, proper benches to sit and listen to their teacher effectively, drinking

water, play grounds for recreation and other recreation facilities, toilet facilities, cleanliness ofthe school surroundings, etc. For instance, the rough black board does not encourage even some

efficient teachers to write some thing on it. This will encourage teachers to avoid explanationwith some important diagrams and thus only oral teaching. Which will lead to lower knowledge

levels to the students. Hence, the serious reformers should first improve this kind of basic but themost important facilities immediately.

    Lack of accountability:

In most of the government schools the accountability among the teaching staff and otheradministrative staff is lacking. Friendship among school administrative staff and the teachers is

responsible for the negligence of many aspects of education. This is evident in the fact that forthe past several years the private schools have been excelling in several examination results. In

some schools, corruption too is rampant in the accounts department due to lack of accountability

and transparency. Many teachers and other staff too are lazy. Thus the ultimate victims of allthese malpractices are the innocent children who would like to excel in life. Teachers should

motivate and guide the children with the help and counselling from the principals of schools.Adding fuel to the problem, many schools do not conduct parent, teacher meetings regularly to

    take stock of the situation!.

Unlike the urban schools and colleges, the schools in rural areas do not encourage the children toexcel in extra curricular activities like sports, out door activities, handicrafts, etc. The quality of

teaching staff in the rural schools too needs to be improved further.
