Low Rise Curtain Wall
The Kestrel Low Rise Curtain Wall system is an ecomomic and aesthetically pleasing solution to facade cladding. The system is suitable for use on all buildings where good thermal and weather performance is required.
The range of profiles is based around 75mm, 100mm and 125mm mullion and transom designs accompanied by purpose designed ancillary items required of a high performance curtain wall system. Section performance requirements must be calculated from site conditions and all loading requirements. Please contact our technical office for advice and support regarding application.
The system is desgined for pressure equalised zone drainage and this is achieved with drained and ventilated glazing rebates. The glass or panel/window infills are retained with rigid PVC pressure plates which have co-extruded weather seals. Inner seals are available in lineal form and vulcanised pre-formed corner pieces.
Materials:Aluminium profiles are extruded from alloy 6060/6063 T6 complying with the recommendations of BS EN 755:1-9
Finishes:Mill finishEtched and anodised to BS 3987: 1991 (01.06.2007) - Silver AA25 or colours on request.Polyester Powder coat paint to BS EN 12206-1:2004. See separate list for standard colour range available.
Construction:Aluminium profiles are square cut mechanically jointed and secured using stainless steel screws driven into extruded screw splines. All joints should be sealed against water penetration.
Glass, Glazing and Infil Panels:The system can accomodate 24mm and 28mm thick IGU's or composite panels and 6mm, 6.4mm, 8.8mm, 10mm and 10.8mm single glazing variations by using aluminium rebate adapters and alternative internal gasket types.
PVC co-extruded pressure plate and internal EPDM glazing gaskets are extruded to BS 2782 and BS 476 part 7 and BS 4255 part 1 respectively
Installation:Kestrel Aluminium Systems Limited recommends that fabricators and installers are able to demonstrate competence and experience in carrying out such work. Records should be kept regarding training and other relevant experience. Installers should be CWCT trained and certified.
Installation standard = CWCT - Standard and Guide to Good Practice for Curtain Walling.
Please see page 6.01.02 for comprehensive performance data

Profiles have been independantly modelled and assessed in accordance with BS EN ISO 10077-2:
The analyses assume steady state heat flow and therefore any thermal mass effect of any potential adjacent construction or building component has not been considered. The sealed unit edge spacer used in the thermal models was of the type shown in BS prEN13947, with a 0.5 mm wall thickness aluminium hollow profile and 0.5 mm thick seals between the edge profile and the glass panes.
The models are based on the standard Kestrel Aluminium Systems low-rise curtain walldetails (issue 1).
The following values were used in the analyses:
Internal air temperature 20°CExternal air temperature 0°CExternal surface resistance 0.04 m2K/WInternal surface resistances 0.13 & 0.20 m2K/W
Airspace thermal resistances from BS (CEN) EN ISO 10211-1 (automatically generated by LBNL THERM)

Low Rise Curtain Wall
System Design.
As curtain walling is installed from a set of pre-fabricated components partly in the factory and finally on site, far greater care and use of trained site personnel is required over and above that for installing windows. To this end we have listed the following general guidance notes.
Further reading:
Centre for Window and Cladding Technology;
Standard and Guide to Good Practice for Curtain Walling.
British Standard publications;
BS EN 13830: 2003BS 8200: 1985
BS 8118: Part 1: 1991.BS 8118: Part 2: 1991.BS 6399: Part 2: 1997.
Fabricators and installers MUST maintain accurate records of accredited training, and proof of experience regarding the fabrication and installation of curtain walling.
Basic design considerations.
Building tolerances and movement.
The elevation containing curtain walling must be assessed and discussed at design stage as the structural opening and fixing areas will not always be plum, square and true dimensionally. Thus when designing a curtain walling screen agreement must be reached on tolerances within the building. Either by agreed dimensions or a full survey of the structural opening and fixing grounds prior to manufacture (allow sufficient time for fabrication after a site survey).
The fixing points and openings may be subject to movement (designed in by the structural engineer, or due to general building settlement) these tolerances must also be taken into account during the design of a curtain walling screen. Agreement with the project architect and engineer must take place to ascertain the maximum and minimum dimensions for tolerances and movement at ALL fixing points and curtain wall perimeters during the initial design stage.
All movement MUST be isolated between floors and at no time should a mullion member be fixed rigidly at all fixing points on the primary structure.

Low Rise Curtain Wall
Loading.
Curtain wall sections are designed to carry self weight, glass weight, wind pressures and other imposed loads. A curtain wall mullion must NEVER be used as a primary structural member within the building, or have loads designed for the primary structure transferred to the curtain wall grid.
Hung Condition.
A hung curtain walling is based upon the top section of the lower mullion being fixed via fixing brackets back to a suitable structural fixing point. This fixing carries all dead loads, wind loads and all other associated loading back to the structure. The bottom of the hung mullion is located in position by either a sleeve welded to a base plate or in multi-storey situations by a sleeve within the top of the hung mullion. This detail allows for vertical movement and in no circumstances should the mullion section be fixed to the sleeve.
Prop Condition.
A propped curtain walling is based upon the bottom of the mullion carrying all the loads either direct to structure at cill or in multi-storey situations by a bracket back to suitable fixing points. The top of the bottom mullion is located in position by a sleeve. The head of the lower mullion has no mechanical fixings to mullion or sleeve. The head of the mullion carries no dead loads it only transfers wind/imposed loads to fixing detail. This detail allows for vertical movement and in no circumstances should the mullion section be fixed to the sleeve.
Section performance requirements must be calculated from site conditions and all loading requirements. Please contact our technical office for advice and support regarding application.
Fixing points.
Fixing points for curtain walling must be sufficient to carry the weight of the screen plus and other imposed loads. Do not fix to cold rolled sections i.e. sheeting rails / purlins etc. fixing to concrete floor slabs and hot rolled sections are recommended. Agree with the project architect and engineer the method of fixing (hung or propped) and cost effective fixing options at head, cill and intermediate levels as necessary at design stage. These faces should be a set close to the rear of the curtain wall main box sections. It is advised that a nominal distance of 25-30mm is allowed between structural fixing and the back of the mullion to minimise the cantilever effect thus saving on the size of bracket required.Important note: If at any time you have any queries regarding the Kestrel Low Rise Curtain Wall system please contact the Technical Department.
Prior to any installation on site it is advised that the structural fixing points and all fixing details have been issued to and approved by either the contract Architect or contract structural engineer. It is also advised that full working drawings are prepared and approved by the contract Architect prior to commencement of the installation on site.Prior to the installation of the curtain wall grid it is advised that a check of the structural opening is carried out.

The U-values for roof windows and rooflights in this table are based on the U-value having been assessed with the roof window or rooflight in the vertical position. If a particular unit has been assessed in a plane other than the vertical, the standards given in this Approved Document should be modified by making an adjustment that is dependant on the slope of the unit following the guidance given in BR 443.
