CHALLENGE:

The challenge was to refurbish and extend the existing Pier and to design an iconic retail and customer experience for the future against the backdrop of the complexity in airport planning and without obstructing its current operation. Its complexity can almost be described to be like an open heart surgery.

Under the design lead of CallisonRTKL London, the proposed architectural solution of this complex aviation project required a close international collaboration with aviation and MEP experts from Arcadis, Airside and Energieeffizienz GmbH in UK, Germany, Netherlands, Austria and Switzerland.

STRATEGY:

To create the airport experience of the future and enhance the customer comfort, this design proposal punctures radically the existing envelope. It introduces internal light wells to let abundance of day light into the customer areas and landscaped atriums promote regional biodiversity within the previously rather artificial and dark setting.

Previously confined passenger areas were opened up and a barrier free large area features a differentiated seating landscape of lounge furniture, communication and efficient traditional waiting areas. The latter is directly assigned to the gates and makes use of the existing high-quality furniture of the current pier head. Sustainability and innovation are here design program and strategy, the chimney effect of the naturally ventilated gardens and large-scale solar cells on the roof are part of the energy concept. Timber elements from regional sustainable forestry and large green walls enhance the interior climate. The control system addresses clearly different directions of movement and is supported by graphic elements on the glazed light wells.

RESULTS/IMPACT:

The gardens and light wells create a sense of space and icon within the global family of airports. The innovative energy concept makes it possibly one of the greenest airport extensions worldwide.

Adding to Vienna Airport’s excellent service offer the proposed upgrading of the Pier head East creates a place of greatest functional quality and customer comfort.

Demolishing the previously confining interior walls and safety barriers lead to a generous open space concept. By introducing outdoor gardens at the gates and at the center of the inner rotunda the currently rather artificially lit and uncomfortable space will be enhanced, flooded with daylight. The gardens create a sense of space and icon amongst the global airports family and support the innovative energy concept with their intended chimney effect and making it possibly one of the greenest airport extensions worldwide.Sustainability and innovation are here design program and strategy. In addition to the lightwells, large-scale solar cells are part of the energy concept. Timber elements from regional sustainable forestry and large green walls enhance the interior climate. The differentiated seating landscape is divided into several complementary areas: lounge furniture, communication and efficient traditional waiting areas. The latter is directly assigned to the gates and makes use of the existing high-quality furniture of the current pier head. The children’s and family areas are located north of the duty-free shops. The control system addresses clearly different directions of movement and is supported by graphic elements on the glazed lightwells. Large format graphics on the back painted glass panels of the escape stairs feature a clear guiding system. Large-format advertising media screens are introduced on the building wall opposite the green wall, the sides of the lounge areas as well as on the perimeter ring of the central rotunda.

The proposed architectural solution of this complex aviation project has been developed in close international collaboration with aviation and MEP experts from Arcadis, Airside and Energieeffizienz Gmbh in UK, Germany, Netherlands, Austria and Switzerland.
