Getting Started – Week 0/1
Some University Terminology
Program = The Degree you are study to achieve
Program Convenor = An academic staff member with oversight and management of the entire program of study
Course = Each individual element of the program
Course Coordinator = The academic that is ‘in charge’ of a particular course
Some University Terminology
Core Courses = compulsory courses completed by everyone studying the program
Directed = a course you choose from a Directed List within the program this is different to an Elective course
Elective = any unrestricted course in the University
most programs have Electives but some (e.g. combineds) do not
refer to your program handbook
Major =a structured sequence of courses providing specialised knowledge in a particular study area
Full-time study =
Semester Study Load
40 Units per semester
Domestic Students: Enrolled in 30 units or more per semester or enrolled in a total of 60 units or more in that academic year = Full-Time for Centrelink
International Students: Enrolled in 40 units per semester
Part-time study = Domestic Students: 10 – 20 units per semester
International Students: Should enroll full-time. Meet with a Student Progress Advisor or visit Student Central if you want to vary your course load.
Every 10 unit course requires 10 hours study per week
BUT this varies week to week!
Lots of courses are ‘tail heavy’
A Program Plan outlines the structure of your degree. It is designed to provide you with an easy to follow plan you can use to check that you are on track with your degree, and help you choose courses that will be appropriate for your program.
Program Plan
How to access your program plan
Log into myUON Click the My Details tile See your Program Plan under
Program Information
PLEASE DON’T PICK YOUR COURSES BASED ONLY ON A ‘NICE’ TIMETABLE
If you are ‘on track’ the program plans should give you a workable clash free timetable.
If you are ‘off track’ your program advisors and program convenors know the requisite information and can advise you the best order to complete.

ELECTIVE PATHWAYSHave you thought about what you are going to do with your electives?
SPECIALISATIONS• Can be helpful if you wish to broaden your skills and
knowledge in another engineering discipline; or specialise in
areas such as business, maths or science.• The Elective Pathways have been designed to provide
you guidance on how to select your elective courses.
STUDY ABROAD• You may also be interested in studying abroad – keep this in
mind when selecting your courses throughout your degree.
Please note that these pathways are suggestions only and will not be
noted formally on the final degree certificate.
Attendance at some classes is
compulsory for students new to
