PrograMMe1. Concert Band - The Avengers by Alan SilvestriThis piece of music surely needs no introduction. A strong classic that has been running for the
past few years, it is a soundtrack that is as iconic as the movies it accompanies. In fact, the
choice to present this piece is homage to Infinity War, which aired in theatres earlier this year.
Many members among the Northbrooks Concert Band so happen to be movie buffs as well,
and are excited to present this amazing piece to everyone.
2. Concert Band - Digital Prism by Larry Clark
A modern band composition, it seeks to depict the colour, intensity and vibrancy of the digital
age. It is a complex piece that attempts to take a single idea and put it through different
lenses, much like every topic we experience in this digital age. Amidst this experience, the
piece seeks to demonstrate the most straightforward form of music expression to convey its
ideas. With this fresh and refreshing piece of music, Northbrooks Concert Band seeks to carry
through and demonstrate its ability as a modern band within this performance.

5. Drama Club - 'Boom' by Jean TayThe Northbrooks Drama Club is proud to present an adapted production of Boom by local
playwright, Jean Tay. Boom is set in Singapore and captures the story of an elderly mother and
son, Boon, and their struggles as they are divided over the potential en-bloc sale of their home.
Boon’s mother wishes to remain at her old apartment, Zion Mansion, and wait for her husband’s
return while Boon desires to move out and is obsessed with chasing after society’s idea of
success. The story gives us a glimpse into a mother’s love and her sense of place, and how she
navigates an increasingly urbanised Singapore. It asks questions about the emotional costs of
economic progress and urban development. Northbrooks’ theatre production of the play is an
exciting performance that infuses colloquial dialects with a set that is entirely designed by our
very own drama-lites!

wherever they go.

PrograMMe7. Guzheng Ensemble - Scaling Heights (展翅上腾)This piece was composed by Lim Choo Li in June 2018 for the Northbrooks Secondary guzheng
ensemble. The composer drew inspiration from the school motto ‘Soaring yet rooted’. The
piece maintains traditional Chinese pentatonic elements and uses an ascending scale to
figuratively depict the flight of an eagle. A strong and fast rhythmic pace depicts the facing of challenges, and the modernistic melody aims to connect with life.
8. Guzheng Ensemble - Zapin La Luna Composed by Lim Choo Li 林珠莉This piece was composed by Lim Choo Li in August 2018 for the Northbrooks Secondary
guzheng ensemble. It broke the traditional boundaries and stretched the traditional tuning to
an advanced level. The piece is set in a harmonic minor mode and the zapin style to illustrate an alluring yet mystifying dance performed under the moon.
9. Sean Teng - Solo Piano Performance
The first piece, Scherzo No. 2 from Akvareller, Op. 19, is composed by Niels Wilheim Glade in
1850. It was composed as part of his collection of piano pieces entitled Akvareller, which means
‘Watercolours’, comprising of two volumes and each containing five pieces. The Scherzo is
notable for its Mendelssohn-like lightness of touch.
The next piece, 不為誰而作的歌, or roughly translated to ‘Twilight’, is composed by local Mando-
pop composer JJ Lin in 2015. The melancholic and longing tune is the main highlight of the
song, one which hopes to resonate with the heart of its listeners.
10. Concert Band- 细水长流 (Friendship Forever;
The narrow stream flows for a long time) by Liang Wern Fook
Composed by Dr Liang Wern Fook, this song can safely be dubbed as the representative
anthem of Xinyao, or local Chinese Music. It has been rewritten and sung by many around
Singapore, even featuring in the movie ‘That Girl in Pinafore’ that depicts school life in
Singapore. As a nod in acknowledgement of culture and heritage that forms part of the
community spirit we all belong to, the Northbrooks Concert Band seeks to present this local
classic in its own interpretation.
11. Concert Band - Shake it off ( Arr. by Michael Brown ) Mention the name Taylor Swift and a whole list of Billboard Top 100 songs can easily come to
mind. She broke onto the scene in 2006, and her first album stayed 157 weeks on the rankings.
Her songs dominated the airwaves, radios, television broadcasts, and thus makes for the larger
portion of young childhood memories for many students today. Her hit song, Shake it off, is the
ninth most viewed video on Youtube, with over 2.6 billion views. It is a fun and energetic piece
about self-confidence that the Northbrooks Concert Band hopes everyone will enjoy.
12. Show Choir - Charlie Puth Mashup
This performance incorporates two songs by popular pop singer Charlie Puth- We don't talk
any more and Attention. It features the Northbrooks Show Choir’s efforts to rearrange a
mashup on their own efforts as a special interest group in the school!
