The Council participated in the 6th Annual ‘AYUSH Natural World Expo-2018’, organized by the Trinity Group

during 2nd Aug.- 4th Aug, 2018 at Goa. Hon’ble Shri. Shripad Yesso Naik, Union Minister of State (IC), Ministry of

Institute for Cancer (RRAP-CARIC) represented the Council during the event and put up a stall for distribution and

sale of CCRAS publications and promotion of council’s activities. For contribution to the field of research and

development in Ayurvedic Sciences, the Council was awarded with “AYUSH Ratna” award in the category of

“India’s Premier Ayurvedic Institution” by the Hon’ble Minister.

ICD team of WHO, along with officers of CCRAS and Ministry of AYUSH, Govt. of India visited CARICD, Punjabi

Bagh, New Delhi on 29th September, 2018 to review the status of morbidity under NAMASTE-Portal. The team was

welcomed by Dr. N. Srikanth, DDG, CCRAS on behalf of the Council. The data entry of NAMASTE-Portal was

explained by Dr. Rajkala, R.O. (Ay.). The team visited IPD, Panchakarma and examined & appreciated research data,

NAMSTP data & medical record section.

Brainstorming session: AYUSH in Public Health on 25th September 2018

The Council organized a Brainstorming Session on “AYUSH in Public Health: Strategy and Framework” on 25th

September, 2018 at Lucknow. RARIED, Lucknow coordinated and made arrangements for the event. The session was

inaugurated by Padmashree Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, Secretary, Ministry of AYUSH, Govt. of India. Prof. Vaidya

K.S. Dhiman, Director General, CCRAS, Dr. N. Srikanth, Deputy Director General, CCRAS and other dignitaries and

experts of AYUSH streams from all over India were also present. Books on “Background Note on AYUSH in Public

health: Strategy and Framework” and “Research Oriented Health Care Services of CCRAS” were also released by

Secretary, Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India on the occasion.

4th National Symposium on Nutraceuticals

Council participated in the 4th National Symposium on “Neutraceuticals: Functional Foods, Dietary Supplements and

natural Medicines” scheduled on 25th July 2018 at Hotel Royal Plaza, New Delhi, organized by Associated Chambers

of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM). Central Ayurveda Research Institute for Cardiovascular

Disorders, Punjabi Bagh, New Delhi, participated in the event on the behalf of the Council. Display and distribution of

brochures for health awareness (IEC materials) were the activities of the Council during the event.

Second Wellness India Expo of Krishi India Expo 2018

Council’s achievents and contributions were highlighted at the Krishi India 2018 Expo/ Wellness India 2018 Expo on

Agriculture, Biotech, Health, Organic, organized by ITPO from 20th to 22nd Aug at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. A

team headed by Dr. Shiv Shankar Rajput and Dr. Rajkala Patil from CARICD carried out promotional activities

during the event. Shri. Alphons Kannanthanam Hon’ble Minister of State (IC) for Tourism, Govt. of India inaugurated

the event.

Hon’ble M/o State for Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of India, Shri Ashwini Kumar Choubey, visited

Coucil’s stall at 4th National Symposium on Nutraceuticals

2018, in the Heritage Lawn, Solapur district, Maharashra. As representatives of the Council, Research Officer (Ay.)

and Herbarium Assistant, from RAIFR, Pune were deputed to attend this event. Activities aimed at spreading

awareness among public regarding Ayurveda and importance of medicinal plants in improving health and well being

were carried out by the team. The institute also represented the Council at the “Vision Maharashtra Pune” event

conducted by Ministry of AYUSH, Govt. of India at Auto Cluster Exhibition Hall, Pimpari Chichvad, Pune during 3rd

to 5th August 2018.

NARIP, Cheruthuruthy

In order to mark the World Hepatitis Day, the Council organized health awareness programmes through National

Ayurveda Research Institute for Panchakarma (NARIP), Cheruthuruthy. Institute Director Dr. G K Swamy

inaugurated the programme that witnessed active participation from Council Officials and staff and notable gathering

of visitors.

RARILSD, Thiruvananthapuram

Contributing to the cause of flood affected areas, the Council supported patients and families in need through the

initiative #Keralafloods 2018 –We Shall Overcome. Besides providing essential health care the Regional Ayurveda

Research Institute for Lifestyle Related Disorders (RARILSD), Thiruvananthapuram also collected relief materials

for the needy.

Honorable Secretary, Ministry of AYUSH, Padmashree Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha visited the Regional Ayurveda

Institute for Fundamental Research (RAIFR), Pune on 02.07.2018. Dr Sarita Gaikwad, Assistant Director, AYUSH,

Maharashtra, Department of Ayurveda, Sassoon General Hospital, Pune was also present as an invitee.

CCRAS Headquarters, New Delhi

Council organized ‘Orientation Workshop on Documentation of Ethno medical Knowledge’ for the Faculty,

Department of Botany and Students of Final Year B.Sc. (Life Sciences), Maitreyi College, University of Delhi on

1st September 2018 at CCRAS Hqrs, New Delhi. The purpose of the workshop is to create awareness on the

importance of Ethno medicine; its rationale and relevance in contemporary research; major issues in the

development of new drugs through the leads from LHTs and folk claims; guidelines for Medico-Ethno botanical

field studies; documentation, analysis and validation of Local Health Traditions (LHTs) and folk claims, herbaria

techniques, CCRAS Perspectives documentation and validation of LHTs, folk claims and Ethno medical claims,

publication of articles and other related issues.

A meeting was held to discuss social media activities of the Council on 27th July 2018 at Ministry of AYUSH

under the Chairmanship of Joint Secretary, MoA, Shri P. N. Ranjeet Kumar. The Deputy Director General,

CCRAS, Dr. N. Srikanth along with officers of Council attended the meeting.

CARICD, Punjabi Bagh

Panchakarma Assistant Training Course was inaugurated at CARICD, Punjabi Bagh on 23rd July, 2018 by the

Director General, CCRAS, Prof. Vaidya K.S. Dhiman. The Director General delivered a motivational speech

regarding Ayurveda for the beginners.

Dr. Nandini Jadhav, R.O. (Ay.), CARICD, Punjabi Bagh presented a paper as Resource Person on “Treatment

Protocol in Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy” on 21st July, at Sunetra Conclave 2018 organized by

Shreedhareeyam Hospital, Kerala and TAS at Kothatukulum, Kochi, Kerala.

RAIFR, Pune

C- DAC Training Programme

Dr. G. P. Prasad, A.D. I/c is regularly co-coordinating the Three months course for AYUSH Doctors on IT

Application in Healthcare delivery for capacity building of the nominated officers/faculty from AYUSH at Centre for

Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Pune –reg. He had also attended the inaugural function of the same.

Dr. B.R.K.R. Govt. Ayurveda Medical College on 25th July 2018 in which about 100 PG/UG students and 12

faculty members had participated.

Nizamia Tibbi Unani Medical College on 26th July 2018 in which about 80 PG/UG students and 10 faculty

members had participated.

JSPS Govt. Homoeopathy Medical College and Hospital, Hyderabad on 27th July 2018 in which about 60

UG/PG students and 08 faculty members had participated.

Mahatma Gandhi Yoga and Naturopathy College, Hyderabad on 20th August 2018 in which about 50 UG

students and 06 faculty members had participated.

Ananta Lakshmi Govt. Ayurveda Medical College, Warangal on 21st August 2018 in which about 60 PG/UG

students and 08 faculty members had participated.

The programmes are intended to sensitize AYUSH faculty and students to utilize the information disseminated by

Ministry of AYUSH through various social media platforms viz., facebook, twitter and the ministry website.

The Council has been known for the implementation of the Official Language Policy of Official Language

Department, M/o Home and External affairs, Govt. of India. As part of this venture, Hindi Pakhwada (14th to 28th

September 2018) and Hindi Karyashala were organized by all the peripheral Institutes of CCRAS, New Delhi. Reports

were received from:

CARICD, New Delhi, performed different competitions such as Vad Vivad Pratiyogita, Nibandh Pratiyogita, Hindi

Tippan Evam Alekhan Pratiyogita, Shrutlekh Pratiyogita, Kavya Path Pratiyogita and Prashnottari (Quiz) Pratiyogita

which is participated by all officers and officials. Hindi Adhikari reviewed the Hindi activities in the institute.

Winners and participants were awarded with prize money on Samapan Samaroh. RARILSD, Thiruvananthapuram,

Two week programme aimed at encouraging the staff to use Hindi language with ease in official works. Various

competitions were held which included Srutalekh, Nibandha lekhan,Vada prathivad, Prashnottar and Kavya patan .A

Karyashala was conducted by Smt S Sreelatha (Facualty, Hindi training scheme, Home ministry, OL).The valedictory

function was blessed with the presence of Sri Mohan Chaudhari (AD Rajabhasha,CPMG). RARISD, Vijayawada,

had organized various competitions and prize distribution to the winners. A Hindi Karyashala was held on 25th

September 2018. MSRARIED, Jaipur, organised various competitions among the officials and staff. The

competitions were Debate, Essay writing, Dictation, Hindi poetry, Hindi noting & draft and Quiz etc. Winners were

awarded by the Chief Guest.Quarterly Hindi workshop organized at the Institute on dated 29th September, 2018. Shri

Bhanu Kumar Bharadwaj, Varishth Hindi Anuvadak, Kendriya Prashashanik Adhikaran, Jaipur delivered the lecture

on the topic entitled “Hindi Anuvad Sambandhita Dharana”. NIIMH, Hyderabad, Celebrated Hindi Diwas and Hindi

Pakhwada in the Institute by organizing different competitions amongst the Officers and staff. Winners were awarded

with cash prizes on closing day. The Institute organized the quarterly Hindi workshop at Institute level on 5th

September 2018. A Hindi fortnight was organized at CARIRD, Patiala; various activities were performed during this

period. A Hindi workshop was organized on 26th September 2018 in the Institute. One day Hindi workshop has been

conducted at CSMRADDI, Chennai on 20th July 2018, in which In-charges/Hindi Officers/Assistants of Peripheral

Institutes of CCRAS stationed at Non Hindi areas have been participated. Besides, Dr. N. Srikanth, DDG, Dr. M.M.

Sharma, R.O. (Ayu.), Hindi Officer, CCRAS and all the Officers and staff of the Institute have been actively took part

in the workshop. Various Dignitaries from Civil departments i.e. Railway, BSNL, SBI etc have also been invited to

deliver informative lectures. Rajbhasha Hindi Pakhwada was celebrated at RARIND, Mandi with the participation of

all officials and staff. Various competitions were organized during this, like debate, assay writing, short note, poetry

recitation and Quiz on General Knowledge about Hindi and current affairs. NARIP, Cheruthuruthy celebrated

Rajbhasha Hindi Pakhwada by conducting activities and competitions like Debate, Essay writing, Tippan Evam

Alekhan and shrutlekh, Quiz competition, which were attended by all the officers and staff of the institute. Winners

were rewarded with prizes.RARIED, Lucknow, celebrated Rajbhasha Hindi Pakhwada with active participation of

officials and staff of RARIED, Lucknow. Many activities and competitions were organized. The institute In-Charge

awarded the winners with prizes. During Rajbhasha Hindi Pakhwada at RAIFR, Pune, Hindi related various

competitive activities were organised, which was participated by Institute’s officials and staff. During this a half day

Hindi Workshop on use of technical terminology in office work was also conducted on 25th September.

Swachhata Hi Seva Campaign

NARIP; Cheruthuruthy, organised Awareness Class on Swachhata Hi Seva conducted Swachhata Hi Seva 2018 on

the occasion of 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi Ji and 4th anniversary of Swachh Bharat Mission

observed from 15th September to 2nd October in all the peripheral institutes of Council. CARICD, Punjabi Bagh,

performs various activities like Cleanliness of various sections & premises of the institute, Saplings of medicinal

plants were also planted in the garden. Weeding out of old files was done. A Nukkad Natak was played to propagate

the importance of cleanliness & hygiene. NIIMH, Hyderabad, organized activities like rally in the colony, cleaning

of surroundings of the Institute Complex and approach road by the Staff members. Under, THCRP conducted door to

door meetings to drive behavior change with respect to sanitation behaviors in the selected five villages.RARILSD,

Thiruvananthpuram, had organized various activities with an aim of increasing the awareness on hygiene and

RAIFR, Pune, had taken the vow in the leadership of Research Officer –Pharmacology, on dated 15th September

2018, regarding the “Swachhta Hi Seva Pakhwada”. Institute Incharge had addressed the audiences and motivated to

Ayurveda Day Celebrations

As a part of National Ayurveda Day celebration on 5th November 2018, Union Ministry of AYUSH proposed

Ayurveda Day countdown celebrations of 50 days starting from 16th September 2018. Under this, various activities

undertaken such as Awareness classes through OPD, imparting knowledge to public regarding Ayurvedic way of

living, making them familiar with the common medicinal plants their uses in various ailments etc. and in the outreach

programmes like Swasthya Rakshan Programme, Ayurveda Mobile Health Care Research Programme under SCSP

and Tribal Health Care Research Programme etc. ,medicinal plants exhibition and seedling distribution, medical

camps, school based awareness classes etc. with an aim of popularization of Ayurvedic concepts. Reports were

received from all the peripheral institutes of the Council.

Rashtriya Poshan Maah

Rashtriya Poshan Maah has been observed from 15th to 30th September 2018. Awareness classes on nutritional related

topics to the patients/ common public and in the the outreach programmes have been conducted in all the peripheral

institutes of Council. Reports were received from:

CARICD, Punjabi Bagh, Nutritional awareness camps were organized for patients and general public. Through

daily lectures patients, attendants and general public were sensitized about the significance of nutrition during

childhood, adolescence and pregnancy, healthy food habits, the importance of exclusive breast feeding upto 6 months

and complimentary feeding thereafter etc. RARILSD,Vijayawada, conducted various awareness classes on

nutritional related topic in the institute premises as well as in the outreach programmes like SRP, AMHCRP, THCRP

etc.

NIIMH, Hyderabad, performed various activities as a part of celebration of Poshan Maah like providing

Ashwagandharishta, Lohasava, PunarnavadiMandur, Ashwagandha tablets to the pregnant women, children, for

growth and development of the children along with patients having weakness. Distributing pamphlets about Poshan

Maah Abhiyaan, Jan Andolan to the students of ZillaParishad schools of Teegalveni and Matwada villages. Under

Poshan Maah (National Nutrition Campaign) RARIND, Mandi delivered lectures on Nutrition related topics at OPD

of the Institute. Teams of SCSP and SRP also arranged lectures and awareness programmes during tours. At

of Ayurvedic recipes and dietetic rules had been created for publishing in social media. Poshan Maah was celebrated

in CARIRD, Patiala, during September 2018. Various lectures were delivered at OPD level, SRP Camps and SCSP

Camps. Two lectures were delivered in the school regarding nutrition among the school going children.

NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF INDIAN MEDICAL HERITAGE (NIIMH),

The mere mention of this date, 15th August, fills our heart with immense pride and acknowledgment of the lives

sacrificed during the course of the freedom movement. With respect to this, all the peripheral institutes of the Council

celebrated 72nd Independence day by hoisting the National Flag and sang the National anthem to pay tribute to the

Nation. All the officials and staff members participated in the event with full enthusiasm and zeal. Reports were

BACKGROUND:

The Department of History of Medicine was established on 26-09-1956 at Andhra Medical College,

Visakhapatnam on the recommendations of Prof. Henry E. Sigerist the then Director of Johns Hopkins Institute of

History of Medicine, Baltimore, USA to the Bhore Committee in 1944 and suggestion from Maj. Gen. S.L. Bhatia, the

Surgeon-General of the composite State of Madras. It was sanctioned vide. G.O. No. 1465, Health dated 28-09-

1955.Afterwards it was transferred to Hyderabad in the month of December 1956 under the honorary Directorship of

Dr. D.V. Subba Reddy. In view of the National importance of the Department of History of Medicine, it was handed

over to Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) on 14-02-1969 and was renamed as Institute of History of

Medicine. Subsequently it was transferred to Central Council for Research in Indian Medicine and Homeopathy

(CCRIM&H) w.e.f. 01-04-1970. The Institute was renamed as Indian Institute of History of Medicine in the 9th

Executive Committee of CCRIM&H held on 04-08-1973. When the CCRIM&H was divided into four separate

Councils the Institute came under the control of Central Council for Research in Ayurveda and Siddha (CCRAS)

w.e.f. 01-01-1979. Keeping in view of the Institute’s achievements and credibility, the Dept. of AYUSH, Govt. of

India has upgraded the Institute on 15-12-2009 as “National Institute of Indian Medical Heritage”. The Institute was

located in the Osmania Medical College, Hyderabad premises and later shifted to permanent building at

Gaddiannaram, Dilsukhnagar, Hyderabadw.e.f. 21-02-2013.

MANDATE & ACTIVITIES:

The Institute was originally planned to serve as a teaching institute for imparting training and teaching of

History of Medicine for the under-graduate students of Modern Medicine. Apart from this the Institute was also

devoted to research in History of Modern Medicine as well as Indian systems of Medicine. After the Institute was

taken over by the Central Council for Research in Ayurveda and Siddha (CCRAS) on 01-01-1979, the stress is laid

more on research in Indian Systems of Medicine including Yoga and Naturopathy. However, the training, assistance

and service to teachers, scholars and post-graduate students interested in History of Medicine are also continued.

1. Collection/Compilation of rare medical manuscripts/books on different systems and in different languages.

2. Detailed study including translation & publication of selected important manuscripts.

3. Collection of medical information from other sources like ancient non-medical literature - Vedas, Puranas etc.,

Archeological &Epigraphical sources, accounts of foreign travelers to India.

4. Study of historical development and evolution of concepts of diseases, drugs and other aspects of AYUSH system

of medicine.

5. Preparation of biographies of physicians, authors, commentators of classical medical literature of different

periods.

6. Projects for writing History of Medicine Area wise, Period wise and Theme wise.

7. Collection, editing and publication of News & Notes and historical materials including the publication of the

Journal (JIMH) of the Institute & Monographs.

8. Arrangement of exhibitions on some specific occasions like medical seminars, celebrations etc. to exhibit the

development of medicine in India and for dissemination of AYUSH systems.

9. Referral services and guidance to research scholars visiting Medico-Historical Library of the Institute.

10. Organizing Seminars, Conferences and Workshops on medico-historical subjects and others

B. Medico-Historical Library:

It functions as a referral library and is not a substitute or replica of any medical college library. Library contains

11558 books (out of which 452 are rare books) on different aspects and branches of History of Medicine and the

collection includes several classical texts of AYUSH systems and European medicine which includes some early

editions. It possesses 286 Manuscripts (Palm leaf/paper) (Ayurveda-173; Unani-107; Siddha-06). It has 1779

Periodicals/Journals (National/International). The rare collection of above made the library unique in India and South

Eat Asia. Medical students of all systems, Ph.D. Scholars, medical historians and general public visit the library for

their reference purposes.

C. Medico-Historical Museum:

Museum is having two main sections on history of medicine viz., i. The World Medicine ii. Medicine in

India. The exhibits include valuable collection with estampages of medical inscriptions, rare photos, paintings, charts,

models made up of plaster of Paris, Postal stamps of medico-historical importance and antique clinical apparatus etc.,

to illustrate the development of medicine and medico-historical events related to AYUSH and other systems. All

together museum consists of 850 exhibits on history of Ayurveda, Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, Sowa rigpa,

Homeopathy and modern medicine Laboratory facility and fumigation chamber for Preservation & Conservation of

manuscripts and rare books is also available for the Museum.

The Institute is also having Reprographic section with a Plain Paper Copier, Sanyo LCD Projector to help
