You want to keep your study options open You should pursue: Advanced Level (A Level)
A typical A Level programme takes up to two years to complete. A minimum of three A Level subjects is required to enter most universities. A Level is divided into Advanced Subsidiary (AS Level) and A2 Level. Examinations are carried out at the end of each level and carry 50% of the overall grade. Your A Level results will be recognised globally and allow you to enter most private and public universities in Malaysia and around the world. Estimated fees for A Level range from RM14,000 to RM66,000.
You want a qualification that is recognised by Australian universitiesYou should pursue: SACE International and Western Australian Matriculation (AUSMAT)
Both SACE and AUSMAT can be completed in a year. The curriculum is roughly 50% examination-based for AUSMAT and 30% for
SACE International, while the remaining is based on coursework.
The fees for SACE International range between RM21,000 and RM28,000, and AUSMAT between RM15,000 and RM25,000. Both programmes are also recognised by most Malaysian private universities and most universities around the world.
You prefer coursework to examinations You should pursue: Canadian Pre-University Programme (CPU) and Canadian International Matriculation Programme (CIMP)
The CPU and CIMP take up to 18 months to complete. The Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) is granted to students who complete the CPU or CIMP. Students have to fulfil at least 10 hours of community service and pass the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) in order to graduate. In addition, students are assessed continuously through 70% coursework and 30% examinations. Canadian pre-university programmes can cost anywhere between RM27,000 and RM30,000.
Which Pre-University Programme Suits You?
You want to study in the United States You should pursue: American Degree Programme (ADP)
The ADP leads directly to a degree and takes around four years to complete. Many institutions offer credit transfer options which allow students to continue their degree in American universities. Students can opt for 2+2 (two years in Malaysia and two years abroad) or 1+3 (one year in Malaysia and three years abroad). Alternatively, students can complete the entire ADP locally as some colleges also offer 4+0. The ADP costs approximately RM30,000 a year.
You want a challenging programme You should pursue: The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP)
The IBDP is a two-year programme and is offered by a number of international schools in Malaysia. Applicants need to have excellent academic results in addition to passing an entrance test and interview. The IBDP requires students to complete six subjects,
which are assessed through assignments, oral presentations and examinations. Each subject is graded from 1 to 7, with 7 being the highest. Fees range from RM75,000 to RM90,000.
You want to finish your degree quickly You should pursue: Foundation programmes
Foundation programmes are catered to students who want to continue their undergraduate degree in the same university. The most common Foundation programmes are in Science, Arts and Business. Taking a year to complete, Foundation courses are assessed through a combination of assignments, quizzes and exams. Fees for Foundation programmes range between RM10,000 and RM25,000.
Take your time to choose the right pre-university course. Do not follow your friends or choose a course you think is easy. Do your homework by collecting information from websites, social media pages, Open Days and higher education fairs.
The pre-university programme you pursue must fit your needs in terms of learning style, budget and university goals. Here are some considerations when choosing the right pre-university programme.

Accounting is simply defined as the recording of all financial transactions and data. Every company running a business needs accountants to keep track and report financial activities. This information is necessary to make important decisions on managing a business and its financial planning.
Academic PathwayMost undergraduate degrees in Accounting take three years to complete. There are higher education institutions which offer stand-alone Accounting programmes and Accounting programmes fused with related areas such as Banking or Finance. An Accounting degree teaches the fundamentals of accounting, business, marketing, finance and report writing. Some of the main subjects in an Accounting degree are Financial Accounting, Principles of Finance, Introduction to Taxation and Public Sector Accounting.
Some Accounting degrees are combined with professional qualification papers in the final year. Students who decide to pursue professional accounting qualifications after they graduate may be exempted from having to sit for certain papers. Popular professional accounting programmes are carried out by accounting bodies such as the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), CPA Australia and the Institute of Chartered
Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW).
Individuals who are interested in becoming Chartered Accountants in Malaysia need to possess professional qualifications, gain three years of work experience and apply for a membership at the Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA).
Job Opportunities Those with accounting qualifications can find employment in many industries. They can work in Financial Accounting, Tax, Audit, Management Consulting and Risk Consulting. Some of the job titles within the realm of accounting are Auditor, Accountant, Business Consultant, Tax Consultant, Financial Advisor and Financial Analyst. In addition, individuals with a background in accounting may find employment in Real Estate, Market Research, Logistics and Entrepreneurship.
The main employers of accountants are accounting firms, private, public and non-profit organisations. Some of the leading accounting firms worldwide are PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), Deloitte, Ernst & Young (EY) and KPMG.
Job Duties The responsibilities of an accountant differ according to their specialised roles. Generally,
Careers in Accounting
accountants prepare and analyse accounting records, financial statements and financial reports to make sure they are accurate and adhere to procedural standards. They are in charge of taxation matters such as taxes owed, tax returns and tax payment. Accountants provide advice and help with business decisions by analysing trends, costs and revenues. In addition, accountants use the latest computer systems and software to record financial data and produce reports effectively. Other job responsibilities of accountants are reporting to the management on financial matters, establishing tables of accounts and analysing budgets.
Skills NeededAccountants need to have high proficiency in IT, numeracy and report writing. They have to be motivated and independent as accounting is mainly a one-person job. Skills such as good communication, time management, analytical thinking and problem-solving are important to be a successful accountant. An interest in business and finance is beneficial as well. Accountants also need to have initiative, integrity and trustworthiness as they will be dealing with confidential financial data in their line of work.
The assumption that the accounting profession is boring is wrong. Accounting is an exciting field that allows individuals to work in any industry imaginable. Accountants play an integral part in any company and will always be sought after by employers.
Accounting is one of the more popular programmes pursued by Malaysian students. This article details the academic pathway and role of an accountant.

How to Make the Most Out of University
University life is not all about studying to get your degree. Here are some ways to make the most out of your time at college or university.
Stay on CampusNowadays, it is common to find individuals studying outstation or overseas. For many, this signifies the first time they are moving away from home. If the institution you study at provides accommodation, take the chance to stay on campus right away! Staying on campus is convenient as it is easy to get to classes and facilities by walking or taking the campus bus. Besides that, students who stay on campus gain lifelong skills such as independence and tolerance. Students also have the opportunity to improve their time management, financial management and communication skills. Students learn how to take care of themselves and to live with others when they stay on campus.
Join Extracurricular Activities Majority of colleges and universities have an extensive list of extracurricular activities for students to choose from. Although not compulsory, students are encouraged to be active in extracurricular activities even at college or university level. Join clubs, societies and sporting activities based on your passions and interests. The benefits of joining extracurricular activities include meeting people from different faculties, the opportunity to travel for competitions, gaining new skills and maintaining an active lifestyle. However, it is important not to participate in too many activities that they get in the way of your studies.
Take the Opportunity to TravelA number of undergraduate programmes offer twinning programmes or placements with partner universities abroad. If finances are not an issue, take this opportunity to study in another country! You will meet people from different cultures, learn a new language and expand your worldview. Students who study abroad are known to be more open-minded and tolerant, and this will help greatly when looking for a job in the future. If you do not have the opportunity to study abroad, you can still travel by planning short trips with your coursemates on long weekends and term breaks.
Engage in Social Work and Part-time Jobs University is the time to focus on developing yourself but it is also important to think of ways to give back to the community. If you are passionate about social work, you can plan internal charity drives and events at university itself to raise money for a good cause. You can also participate in social work engagements organised by your university. Not only will you be helping others, you will also be making your university experience more meaningful. In addition, you can work part-time during summer holidays and on weekends. Working part-time means earning extra pocket money and this will also look good on your resume in the future.
Whether you choose to pursue your pre-university, diploma or degree qualifications, going to college or university for the first time is both exciting and scary. Although it is important to study hard, it is equally important to have fun and make the most out of your college or university experience. You will meet people who will become your lifelong friends, make great memories and gain skills that will help you grow as a human being.
“Although it is important to study hard, it is equally important to have fun and make the most out of your college or university experience.”
