Acknowledgement

This Permaculture curriculum was funded within the International Trade Center (ITC) project through the Youth Empowerment Project in The

Gambia. The National Accreditation and Quality Assurance Authority (NAQAA) facilitated the development of the said curriculum through a four-

day workshop held at the NAQAA Conference Hall.

The Curriculum Development Team consist of members from The University of the Gambia (UTG), a private permaculturist and NAQAA.

Specifically, the team expressed gratitude to the Chief Executive Officer, NAQAA, for his technical inputs during the workshops as part of the

development process.

The team also heartily appreciate the support given by the Project Manager, Youth Empowerment project and the whole ITC team for the funding

and their patience during the negotiation process leading to the formal Memorandum of Understanding between ITC and NAQAA.

PROGRAMME INFORMATION

1. Programme Title/Course of Study: Permaculture

3. Occupation Level: Permaculture Assistant

4. Programme Description:

This programme is intended to prepare trainees with the required knowledge and skills to serve as Permaculture Assistant. It covers a minimum

requirement of acquiring basic knowledge on the Introduction to General Agriculture; Introduction to Permaculture; Principles of Permaculture;

Permaculture Design and Practice; Ethical consideration in permaculture and effectively integrate into the agriculture workforce.

5. Programme Aims

The programme goals are:

1. To produce competent permaculture assistant

2. To prepare trainees to be able to provide technical assistance to farmers, consumers and interested stakeholders on the

implementation of permaculture

3. To reduce the unemployment rate among young people and women

4. To promote professional permaculturists

Upon successful completion, trainees will have the ability to:

7. Admission requirements

The minimum requirements to enroll in this programme are:

1. Completion of at least 9 (nine) years of schooling with basic reading and writing skills in English and Numeracy

2. Previous industry exposure and experience

3. Minimum age of 18 years

4. Youth and women/ Irregular migration returnees.

8. Total qualification time of the programme (Programme Duration)

The total qualification time for this programme is a minimum of 40 weeks with an approximate guided teaching and learning time of 15

hours per week.

Assessment Criteria for each outcome

1. Out of 100 marks, 75 marks must be allocated to practical assessments and 25 marks to be allocated to oral/written assessments. In order

for a candidate to be declared competent 65 marks out of the 75 marks must obtained in the practical assessment/examination, and 10 marks

must be obtained out of the 25 marks on the oral/written assessment/examinations.

2. Alternatively, if the institution running is not a licensed training institution, NAQAA will do the Assessment and Certification, and in that

case, the Gambia Skills Qualification Framework conditions apply.

3. Out of 100 marks, 75 marks must be allocated to practical assessments and 25 marks to be allocated to oral/written assessments. In order

for a candidate to be declared competent 65 marks out of the 75 marks must obtained in the practical assessment/examination, and 10 marks

must be obtained out of the 25 marks on the oral/written assessment/examinations.

4. Alternatively, if the institution running is not a licensed training institution, NAQAA will do the Assessment and Certification, and in that

case, the Gambia Skills Qualification Framework conditions apply.
