MISSION STATEMENT

Family Service League helps individuals, children, and families to mobilize their strengths and improve the quality of their lives at home, in the workplace, and in the community.

Caring for newborns to centenarians who rely on the social safety net that FSL provides.

Giving senior citizens companionship and purpose.

Providing hope and protection for people with mental illness.

Allaying the fears and desperation of teens and adults consumed by addiction.

Offering nourishment and shelter to families.

Reaching out to struggling families facing insurmountable fnancial burdens.

Most importantly, our staff, numbering more than 600 professionals and support personnel, provides both physical and emotional aid to Long Island’s most vulnerable citizens. Our fve Family Centers feature up to twenty distinct social services consolidated into one help center — enabling families to take advantage of multiple, integrated services in a more effcient and cohesive way.

Over sixty guests celebrated the opening of FSL’s William Floyd Family Center at a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

WILLIAM FLOYD FAMILY CENTER William Floyd Family Center (WFFC) is located on the campus of the William Floyd School District (WFSD). This collaborative provides vital resources such as crisis counseling, vocational training, housing assistance, and educational workshops for Mastic and Shirley community members. The FSL and WFSD partnership was made possible, in part, through generous grants from the Long Island Community Foundation, Bank of America and JP Morgan Chase. The WFFC embraces a holistic approach that addresses the social and educational needs of children and families by providing access to social and mental health services, and promoting healthy lifestyles while strengthening ties in the community.

EAST END MENTAL HEALTH INITIATIVE FSL has been providing outpatient mental health services to the residents of East End of Long Island for over four decades. Recently the demand for behavioral health services has reached crisis proportion. In 2014, NYS Senator Kenneth P. LaValle, NYS Assemblyman Fred Thiele, Jr., and Suffolk County Legislator Jay Schneiderman, spearheaded the South Fork Initiative (SFI) and secured vital funding for phase one of this project. The frst phase of the SFI helps FSL provide local school districts with crisis services for students experiencing suicidal thoughts/ behaviors or other imminent risk factors. FSL staff conducts assessments either on-site or via the use of tele-psychiatry. This service reduces unnecessary hospital visits and fosters real-time engagement with students, and their families, in crisis.

FINANCIAL LITERACY AND DEBT COUNSELING PROGRAM Since its inception in 1975, FSL’s Financial Literacy and Debt Counseling Program (FLDC) has helped thousands of people confront and resolve their fnancial problems. Long Islanders reach out to the program for assistance in managing their debt, help with preventing home foreclosures and for advice and guidance during periods of fnancial turmoil. The program provides one-on-one assistance and educational workshops to larger groups. FSL received a $20,000 grant from Capital One Bank to support its Financial Literacy and Debt Counseling program.

THE COMMUNITY CRISIS ACTION TEAM The Community Crisis Action Team (CCAT) responds to traumatic incidents, assessing the needs of individuals and groups who have experienced a critical event in the workplace, in the community, or in schools. Members of the FSL Team are often deployed within hours of contact. In this past year the CCAT team provided grief support for the families, friends and co-workers of over 30 individuals who succumbed to suicide. Counselors provide critical care and guidance to those struggling with grief, crisis, or disaster.

CAIR CAIR is our Community Advocacy, Information, and Referral Program. Our most recent facility is the Bellport Family Center, located in the Boys & Girls Club of the Bellport Area which provides vital information, referrals, practical resources and access to various community agencies for community families and adults.

BACKPACKS FOR BACK TO SCHOOL Remember what it felt like to write with a brand new pencil or write on the frst crisp page of a blank notebook? Thanks to Bethpage Federal Credit Union, and other supporters, over 2,000 children started school with backpacks flled with fresh, new school supplies. It can cost nearly $70 to provide a child with notebooks, pens, calculators and books to start the school year. This can be an overwhelming expense for a parent.

UNITED WAY PARTNER FSL is proud to be a United Way partner agency. Their generous support in 2014, which is made possible in part by contributions from thousands of individuals through workplace payroll deduction, included a grant for FSL to offer fnancial assistance to military personnel and veterans.

SUMMER CAMP Nearly 300 children enjoyed two weeks at summer camp, thanks to King Kullen, and support from their customers as well as community members. This adventure provided youngsters with opportunities to make new friends, try new sports and gain confdence in their ability to face new challenges.

THE SPECIAL GIFT OF PROJECT TOY This past holiday season, Project TOY gave over 5,500 children the joy of opening a new present. Many corporations and individuals provide signifcant support for this very special FSL activity. Included among our many generous holiday donors are Geico, Capital One Bank, Hunter Metal Industries, Global Hanger and Display, Inc., Reespecht Life, and Stalco Construction.

COMMUNITY SCHOOL Newsday Charities/McCormick Foundation supported the Brentwood Community School, which is a vibrant partnership between school staff, parents and community members. Children are supported to complete homework assignments, to enjoy after-school recreational activities and to grow into healthy, productive, responsible community residents and life-long learners for the betterment of the Brentwood community.

ADDICTION SERVICES FSL offers comprehensive treatment for people with chemical dependencies, including drugs and alcohol. Services include screenings, assessments, treatment, counseling and evaluations.

CHILDREN AND YOUTH SERVICES FSL provides programs to help children develop emotionally and to minimize delinquent behavior for those who are at risk. Toddlers, young children and teens receive professional counseling and participate in recreational activities designed to increase their self esteem. FSL supports children with autism and their parents through the emotional and psychological issues that arise with autism. Individual counseling sessions and recreational groups foster understanding and socialization.

EARLY CHILDHOOD FSL provides educational and social training that instills confdence and promotes learning skills for pre-kindergarten children. Classroom activities focus on social and emotional growth and the development of physical and motor skills.

FAMILY MENTAL HEALTH AND COUNSELING FSL’s mental health treatment centers include therapeutic, rehabilitative, and counseling support opportunities for every age group. Comprehensive evaluation and treatment for a range of psychological and emotional disorders is available.

HOUSING AND HOMELESS SERVICES FSL offers direct help to individuals and families without basic shelter. Programs range from short-term emergency housing to help with permanent relocation assistance and fnancial aid.

TECHNOLOGY AND EMPLOYMENT FSL gives people hope and inspiration through educational opportunities and technical training. Programs target job skill improvement and provide job search assistance and job placement for persons who are unemployed or under-educated.

INTEGRATED HEALTHCARE FSL brings affordable, top-tier primary care to underprivileged individuals, families and those with mental illness. FSL’s support grid links health systems, physicians, nurse practitioners, and allied health professionals with on-site social services to provide clients with comprehensive health care in one location.

FAMILY SUPPORT SERVICES FSL is committed to the health and well being of the family unit. Programs address both emotional and economic hardship and target pre-K children to senior citizens. FSL supports troubled youth, returning veterans, and people with mental illness and offers emotional, psychological and fnancial aid.

SENIOR SERVICES FSL ensures adequate housing, improved health care and regular social interaction for Long Island seniors and their families. FSL advocates for seniors and families who are fnding it diffcult to provide adequate care and fnancial support for aging family members.

TRAUMA AND CRISIS COUNSELING FSL is on the front line in crisis situations. People who are grieving or who have experienced a catastrophic loss are met with compassion, care and guidance. During volatile situations, response teams deploy to assess and control the crisis at hand. Support groups follow up with counseling and coping techniques.

VETERANS ASSISTANCE FSL empowers returning service men and women and their families by providing emotional, psychological and economic support. Social workers and counselors address the mental health issues that challenge returning veterans from experiencing a smooth re-entry to civilian society. Economic assistance helps families overcome obstacles to housing, employment and fnancial wellbeing.

Over 500 guests toured fve exquisite homes from Cold Spring Harbor to Huntington Bay on May 21st for our 63rd Annual House Tour. Guests lunched at Harbor Club at Prime, while shopping at our boutiques and bidding on raffe prizes. This year’s event was led by Committee Co-Chairs Kim Radovich and Susan Eisner. THE SUMMER GALA A WONDERFUL EVENING FOR A GREAT CAUSE!

The Summer Gala was held on Saturday, July 12th. This annual Hampton’s favorite took place under a grand tent in Westhampton Beach and was co-chaired by Carolyn Drexel and Scott J. Skorobohaty. Guests mingled with NY Jet’s Alumni Players and the Flight Crew Cheerleaders. This extraordinary evening included delicious hors d’oeuvres, cocktails, dinner and dessert. The festivities of the night included dancing and shopping for unique gifts and services at the designer auction. We were honored to present Gair Betts, Kimberly Stevens, and Sandy Wyman with Community Leadership Awards. A wonderful evening for a great cause!

GREAT CHEFS OF LONG ISLAND

The gastronomic tradition known as “Great Chefs of Long Island” was held on Monday, November 10th in Woodbury. Over 40 of Long Island’s top restaurants presented their best fare. Guests sampled wonderful wines from Long Island vineyards to pair with the varied culinary selections. This annual favorite was co-chaired by Lisa Paris and Francine Whitehead. Our Honorary Chairman was Michael Bohlsen of the Bohlsen Restaurant Group. FSL had the distinct privilege of honoring several outstanding individuals for their commitment to improving the quality of family life in the communities we serve. Dedicated FSL volunteer and Board Member, Katharine Posillico McGowan of Katharine Jessica Interiors, received the Community Leadership Award. 650 three and four year old children attended toddler and preschool programs.

Suffolk County residents participated in Senior caregiver counseling, support groups and educational programs.

100+ volunteer Ombudsman visited residents throughout Suffolk County’s Long Term Care facilities.

2,000 students received backpacks flled with school supplies.

5,500 children received toys this holiday season.

281 children participated in our Camp Program this summer.

3,000 individuals were given warm beds and shelter during this harsh winter season.

Long Island families continue to be supported by the FSL Disaster Case Management Team while they recover from the devastating effects of Hurricane Sandy.

In 2014 FSL opened two new Family Centers on the South Shore.

We have the support of over 350 active, dedicated volunteers.

Long Island veterans and their families are receiving assistance to rebuild their lives through counseling and fnancial referral resources.

15 school districts throughout Long Island partner with us to provide early intervention and support for children and teens facing challenges at school and home.

Substance and chemical abuse programs for teens and adults are offered at 7 locations throughout Suffolk County.
