    MOMENTS

    TRANSFORM

Some know it when its happening.Others realize it only years later.

Im talking about the momentsthat transform our lies.

Weve all had them, those remarkable

instants in time when we suddenlysee the world, and our place within it,in a whole new way.

    OF

ATIONTis was the theme o our Gala on October 4, and its been central toTe Washington Centers mission rom its very beginning.

When Bill Burke ounded Te Washington Center over 35 years ago,he envisioned a place where students o talent and integrity couldexperiencemoments that would change the trajectory o their lives and,in turn, the lives o the communities in which they live.

Tis past summer we had the pleasure o discussing these moments witha number o our alumni, and a selection o their stories was shared inthe Moments video we presented at the Gala.

For some, the moment was about realizing that seemingly diverseinterests and passions could be integrated into a single purposeul whole.

Annie Anton, or example, now a proessor o computer science atNorth Carolina State University, recalled her student days and howher love or the technical and ofen solitary pursuit o computer

programming seemed at odds with her more community-mindedpursuits, which at the time included a serious commitment tostudent government.

Tose two passions came together during her time at Te Washington

Center. While attending a Congressional hearing at which computerscientists were explaining highly technical issues, Anton had what canonly be described as a transormative moment.

By watchg them, i saw apath ahead r my w le,e that culd cmbemy kwledge techlgy

wth my ccer r thewder cmmuty. For alumni like Lucas Boyce, Te Washington Center provided theopportunity he needed to realize clear goals he had already set orhimsel as a young man.

As a kd i had three dreams, recalled Byce, t wrk the Whte Huse, t ly

abard Ar frce oe adt wrk r a nBA team. His transormative moment occurred when he met President Bushduring an internship at the White House in 2002. Te President tookan interest in Boyce, which led to a position a ew years later in the

White Houses Oce o Political Aairs. It was here that Boyce gotthe chance to accompany the President on Air Force One. He alsomet up with an ocial o the NBA, which led to his current positionas Director o Community Relations, Multicultural Insights andGovernment Aairs with the NBAs Orlando Magic.

For recent alumni like Nicole Williamson, Te Washington Centerprovided a series o transormative moments that opened her eyes tothe wider world around her. Having grown up in a small southern town, she ound it both challenging and exhilarating to meet students romaround the world. She joyully related her experiences with her Chineseroommate as well as her co-interns rom Nigeria, Lebanon and Canada.

We were lke a tght amly. Wewere eve cryg whe we hadt g ur separate ways at theed the semester. Most important or Williamson, however, was meeting withAmbassador-at-Large Louis CdeBaca, who heads Americas global ghtagainst contemporary orms o slavery:

its really spred me t ghtr wmes rghts all verthe wrld.Te stories we heard o transormational moments are too numerousto recount here, but one thing unites them all.

In each and every case, the students, many o whom now holdprominent positions in government as well as in the private andnonprot sectors, lef Te Washington Center not only with increasedcondence and an improved set o skills but with a commitment todedicate their lives to causes larger than themselves.

As I mentioned at the outset, this is key to our mission.

Te Washington Center has always been about transorming theoryinto practice, ambition into purpose and potential into achievement. But these have always been means to an even larger end: to help developtalent that will serve the greater good.

And thats never been more critical than right now, or the world itselis experiencing a transormative moment o immense proportions.

o say that things are changing is the ultimate understatement. We areentering an increasingly globalized and hyperlinked world in whichrelationships are changing, politics is changing, how we communicateis changing.

It is crucial that we develop leaders who not only understand this newreality but are grounded in values beyond careerism, parochialism andpersonal gain.

We will continue, thereore, with a renewed sense o purpose: toprovide young people with the chance to transorm themselves and, inturn, transform the world in ways that will provide better lies for us all.

We would love to hear your moment o transormation. Share it withus at http://www.taorms.com/143787.
