Seventeen golf teams came out to Meadow Lake Acres Country Club on August 13 to play a round of golf at one of mid-Missouri’s premier golf courses and raise funds to support the Girl Scout Leadership Experience. Their support helps ensure that Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland is able to provide financial assistance to girls who would otherwise not be able to afford to participate and provide a quality lead-ership development program to all of our members.

Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland was pleased to honor its 2012 Girl Scout Gold Award recipients at a special ceremony in the House Chambers of the Missouri State Capitol building on Saturday, June 2. After a seated luncheon, former Girl Scout Gold Award recipient Jeanne Beck spoke about the lasting benefits of earning the Girl Scout Gold Award that have carried throughout her time in college and graduate school, living and working abroad, and serving as a profes-sional mentor and adviser for college students today. Longtime Girl Scout volunteer and supporter Harry-ette Campbell of Sikeston, Missouri was also present. Through her generosity, every Girl Scout Gold Award recipient this year will receive a lifetime membership in Girl Scouts at no cost to them. This year’s Girl Scout Gold Award recipients are:

On March 12, 2012, the Girl Scout Movement celebrated 100 years of providing leadership development experi-ences for girls. In celebration of this important milestone, 2012 was declared the Year of the Girl. This unique moment in time began a critical dialogue about one of the most pressing issues facing girls today: the fact that 61 percent of girls are either deeply ambivalent about leadership or say leadership is not important to them at all.

Why are girls opting out and choosing not to become future leaders in society? Today’s girls want to lead, but their natural leadership abilities are often challenged by the negative influences around them, including peer pressure not to stand out, a lack of mentors and bullying. This cycle begins early in a girl’s life and has far reaching effects.

What if by helping girls fulfill their potential—by bridging the leadership divide and balancing our leadership culture—we could restore society’s faith in leadership itself? Our urgent and ambitious goal is this: to create balanced leadership in one generation. Girl Scouts is well-positioned to address this challenge through the “ToGetHerThere” campaign, but we can’t do it alone. We need your continued support and investment in girls.

Because when girls succeed, so does society. Together, we can get her there.

When did you become a Girl Scout?I joined Girl Scouts in 1970 as a second grade Brownie (the earliest you could join back then). I was in a very active troop that camped a lot, toured factories and did many service projects. We also traveled to Colorado to hike and Canada to canoe. I stayed in through Cadettes (ninth grade) earning my First Class award.

I rejoined Girl Scouts as an adult in 1993 to help with my oldest niece’s troop. I have been honored to receive a number of awards in Girl Scouts including the Thanks Badge (for my work in helping create a memorandum of understanding between GSUSA and the Society of Women Engineers) and the Thanks Badge II (for my efforts during the council realignment).

What positions did you previously hold in Girl Scouts?I don’t say no easily, so I have had the opportunity to play many roles in Girl Scouts. I started out as an assis-tant troop leader and then segued through troop leader, day camp director, outdoor trainer, master trainer, large event planner… and then the council asked me to be on the Board of Directors. I was lucky to be chosen as the third Vice President of Heart of Missouri Girl Scout Council where I put many miles on my car translating council and GSUSA policy into volunteer speak. I was also very proud to be chosen as the President/Board Chair of Heart of Missouri. When GSUSA announced council realignment, I became a member of the realignment committee that merged five councils into our Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland. I met wonderful volunteers and staff from across Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma who all had a common vision of providing leadership experiences for girls.

What positions do you currently hold in Girl Scouts?I am currently the troop leader of an Ambassador troop in Columbia. Three of my girls are actively working on their Gold Awards. I was also honored to be chosen as one of the 100th Anniversary Tri-Chairs and to be a co-chair of the 100th Anniversary Expo. I just put on orienteering classes at the 100th Anniversary Camporee. I am a facilitator for adult learning in Girl Scouts and am still volunteering for events as the need arises.

What makes you passionate about Girl Scouting?I had wonderful experiences as a girl. As an adult, I have had even better experiences. I have seen girls blossom when they are given the opportunity to try new things. I have seen the wonder in little girls’ eyes as they explore the environment in day camp. I have seen how the teen-agers support each other and create a safe place to still be girls.

As an engineer, I am in a traditionally male-dominated environment. What I learned as a girl, and what I try to instill in the girls in my troops, is that a girl can do what-ever she puts her mind, time and heart to. She can be an engineer, a doctor, a mom, a teacher, an artist ... she just has to work hard and believe. Girl Scouts gives girls the framework to believe, the framework to succeed.

What is your favorite Girl Scout moment?I have so many. As a girl, I was proud that my tent was the only one that stayed up when our camp got hit by a flashflood. I loved canoeing in Canada.

As an adult, I have been honored to pin a lifesaving award on Junior Girl Scout. I was also very moved when I was able to travel to Our Chalet, in Adelboden, Switzerland with two of my nieces (in 1997 and 2012) and see one of the places we had sung about as girls. And being there when we cut the ribbon to open the lodge at Silver Mead-ows Girl Scout camp was a great experience.

Why is being a donor important to you?I believe you should put your money where your heart is. I believe in what Girl Scouting is doing to build girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place. Everyone has time, treasure and talent that they can share with the world. I want to share my treasures with the Girl Scouts.
