Smith can handleI n d ia’s bouncerbarrage — Mc D o n a l dIndia are welcome to subjectSteve Smith to a bouncer bar-rage but the batsman is well-equipped to succeed againstsuch strategy, Australia assis-tant coach Andrew McDonaldsaid yesterday.

Smith was concussed by ashort-pitched delivery fromJofra Archer at Lord’s in 2019and was also bounced out sev-eral times by New Zealandspeedster Neil Wagner lastsu m m e r .

The top-ranked Test bats-man can expect similar treat-ment from India but McDon-ald is unfazed by the prospect, pointing out that Smithbounced back from the Lord’sconcussion with a double cen-tury at Old Trafford.

“Even in one-day cricketand T20 cricket, he’s been ableto score runs with that planbeing adopted by opponents,”McDonald said.

“So, I don’t necessarily see itas a weakness ... they [India]can keep approaching it thatway if they want.”

Virat Kohli and his men didtry it when Australia playedthree one-day internationals inIndia earlier this year, anda repeat of the ploy wouldn’tsu r p r i s e.

“It ’s going to be a tactic a lotof bowling units will useagainst our top-line batters, especially with four men out inone-day cricket,” Mc D o n a l dsaid.

“They ’ve used that tactic be-fore and he’s [Smith] done wellon it before.

“I’m suggesting that planhasn’t necessarily worked to itsfull effect.”

India and Australia willclash in the first of the threeone-day internationals in Syd-ney on Friday.

They will also play threeTwenty20 matches before afour-Test series gets under wayat Adelaide on December 17.

Meanwhile, India need notlose sleep over Virat Kohli’s ab-sence in the last three Testsagainst Australia but AjinkyaRahane and Cheteshwar Pujarawill have to shoulder extra re-sponsibilities, batting greatSunil Gavaskar has said.

Regular skipper and batting

mainstay Kohli will returnhome after the opening Test inAdelaide next month to attendthe birth of his first child withdeputy Rahane set to lead inthe remaining three matches.

“Indian players do tend toraise their game when he is notaround,” former India captainGavaskar told the Times ofIndia newspaper, citing someof India’s victories in Kohli’sa b s e n ce.

“They understand they haveto make up for his absence.”

“It ’s going to be tough forRahane and CheteshwarP u ja ra .

“Both these players have tobat out of their skin.”

Rahane has occasionally ledIndia and would enjoy the re-sponsibility, Gavaskar said.

Pujara was adjudged man-of-the-series when India beatAustralia 2-1 in 2018/2019, be-coming the first Asian side totriumph in a Test series DownUnder.

Known for his impeccabletemperament, Pujara prefers togrind down attacks with hiscompact defence and Gavaskarsaid the top order batsmanshould be allowed to play hisnatural game. — Re u t e r s
