Welcome toThorpe Hall School Thorpe Hall School is a non-selective, co-educational day school with excellent facilities and outstanding results. Children attend our Lower School from 5 to 11 years and receive the individual care and attention they deserve within small, friendly and supportive classes.

Since its foundation in 1925, Thorpe Hall School has prided itself on the good manners, courtesy and conduct of its pupils. This remains central to our identity to this day and pupils and staff enjoy mutual warmth and respect in a school buzzing with activity and energy.

Our overriding aim is to nurture and develop each of our pupils, providing a wealth of opportunity for participation so that every child fi nds something to enjoy and thrive at. We place great emphasis on teaching children how to learn and develop the skills they need to become life-long learners so they can be the best they can be, wherever life takes them.

From the age of 7 children automatically enter a thorough and effective tutoring programme designed to help all suitable candidates gain entry to local Grammar Schools. Many choose to stay at Thorpe Hall and progress to our Upper School, one of the leading settings in the county for success at GCSE.

Building Confi dence We introduce Music and Drama from an early age to help develop qualities such as teamwork, creativity, leadership, communication and self-awareness. Pupils take part in regular productions, sing in prize-winning choirs, play in the orchestra and attend competitions and festivals.

Pupils perform, compose and listen to music of all genres in class and are encouraged to develop their individual skills and learn an instrument. One-to-one tuition is available from well-qualifi ed and enthusiastic musicians in a wide variety of disciplines from strings to percussion.

Drama plays an important role in an education at Thorpe Hall. Pupils develop their ability to fulfi l roles within a team, explore ideas and issues in character and gain the confi dence to perform in front of an audience.

We encourage children to express themselves through music and

drama, helping to boost their self-esteem, confi dence and

sense of achievement.

Nurturing Creativity With the help of specialist staff, pupils paint, draw, sculpt and craft in the School’s custom designed Creative Media Suite. Artistic, cognitive and problem-solving skills are applied to creative challenges with freedom for children to express their own ideas and have fun.

A range of media techniques are explored including watercolour, charcoal, oils, clay, plaster, papier-mâché, card, wood and wire. As they progress through the school pupils also start to explore textiles and design.

Creative learning extends beyond the classroom in our established woodland and cottage gardens. Children apply imaginative thinking to academic subjects, practise important life skills and develop their appreciation of nature.

We provide fi rst class facilities and a wealth of opportunity for children

to explore creative ideas and techniques and have great fun.

Sporting Success Health, wellbeing and exercise are integral to the development of the children within our care. We encourage pupils to work to the best of their ability in both individual and team games with a healthy attitude to competition and positive appreciation of physical and mental agility.

The emphasis is always on participation and we achieve success through reward and recognition. In addition to weekly P.E. classes, all year groups can take part in an extensive extra-curricular sports programme. These specialist clubs provide the opportunity to practise skills, receive extra coaching and socialise.

Our inter-house fi xtures see pupils competing against one another and we provide a full calendar of inter-school competitive sports at local, regional and national level. This is thanks to our proactive involvement with the Southend Schools Sports Partnership and the Independent Schools Association.

We encourage a healthy attitude to competition and a positive

appreciation of physical and mental agility.

Beyond the Classroom At Thorpe Hall, school life is rich with variety and opportunity. We recognise the signifi cant boost to learning that can be achieved by taking children out beyond the classroom and have a busy schedule of trips and excursions. Residential trips in Years 4, 5 and 6 give pupils the chance to become independent and grow in maturity.

Venturing further afi eld and stepping out of their comfort zone, can help boost children’s self-confi dence, independence and communication skills and give them a sense of achievement and self-reliance. These are all vitally important in preparing our pupils for a much bigger world and the next stages of their lives.

We take part in global educational initiatives and competitions including First Lego League (FLL), a robotics programme designed to get children excited about science and technology and teach them valuable employment and life skills along the way.

We provide an education rich with variety and opportunity

that extends well beyond the classroom and lasts a lifetime.
