Students are required to spend a full day at the Junior RnCM to undertake the full curriculum, which comprises:

Principal Study 1 hour Second Study ¾ hour

academic Studies Musicianship/improvisation ¾ hour Theory/Harmony/Composition ¾ hour

Chamber Music Coaching (sight-singing for vocalists) ¾ hour

Plus one of the following as directed by the Head of Junior RnCM:

Orchestral Training 2 hours Brass Band 2 hours vocal Ensemble 2 hours Jazz Ensemble 1½ hours Percussion Ensemble 1½ hours

foundation Section for young Students Our youngest students are placed in the Foundation Section and follow a shortened curriculum, at a reduced fee. Foundation Section students undertake the following:

Principal Study 1 hour Second Study ¾ hour Eurhythmics Class ¾ hour Theory ¾ hour Foundation Choir ¾ hour

when their technical facility and physical stamina have reached the levels required for a full day of activities, it is expected that Foundation Students will become ‘full Juniors’.

academic Studies The Junior RnCM curriculum is underpinned by Academic Studies, which is of key importance in the training of well-informed young musicians. All students attend classes of either theory, harmony or composition (depending on age and standard) plus classes in musicianship, improvisation or Eurhythmics.

The Junior RnCM curriculum complements and supports students’ wider music education, particularly their learning on gCSE and A level Music courses. Help is also available for those preparing for ABRSM practical examinations through the aural training element of the musicianship course.

Chamber Music Chamber Music is an important element in the training of our young musicians, and most of our students receive ensemble coaching in small groups, carefully matched to age, standard and experience. Current ensembles include: percussion duo, piano duos, jazz trio, piano trios, clarinet quartet, saxophone ensemble, guitar quartet, string quartets, wind quintets, harp ensemble, horn ensemble, and flute choir.

orchestral and large ensemble training Junior RnCM orchestras and ensembles rehearse and perform works from a wide-ranging repertoire, and offer concerto opportunities for several outstanding soloists each year. Regular sectional work is undertaken by experienced tutors, and there is a strong emphasis on orchestral and ensemble training. Alongside these in-house activities, students are encouraged to take part in complementary school, county and national activities.

8

Composition Composition is a particular strength of the Junior RnCM. Many of our students have had their works broadcast or performed nationally, and Junior RnCM students have won the BBC Young Composers’ Competition four times in recent years. Our Young Composers‘ Concerts, featuring performances by the Junior RnCM new Music Ensemble, provide an excellent focus for student output.

Conducting Our older students also enjoy the benefits of tuition in the techniques of conducting, score preparation and interpretation. There are opportunities for outstanding student conductors to work with Junior RnCM ensembles.

i still can’t believe how much i learnt during the three fantastic years i enjoyed at JRnCM. The teaching was totally inspirational! i gained so much valuable experience from workshopping my compositions with the new Music Ensemble. All our students are expected to devote considerable time to regular private practice during the week to maximise the benefit from the tuition available. Our staff are skilled in helping students to establish a practice routine, and guide them to make the best use of their practice time.

StudiES

To support their studies, Junior RnCM students can make full use of the RnCM Library, which is open from 9am to 1pm on Saturdays. Junior RnCM students may borrow printed music, scores and text books, as well as making use of the extensive audio facilities.

attEndanCE

Regular attendance is mandatory, as repeated absence can hinder musical progression and be disruptive to ensemble work. Unauthorised absences are rigorously monitored. Requests for permission to be absent, perhaps for nYO or nCO commitments, must be submitted to the Head of Junior RnCM in writing at least one month in advance.

Unless permission is granted by the Junior RnCM, students are not permitted to perform in concerts, competitions or masterclasses outside of the Junior RnCM. in the interests of all students, Junior RnCM concerts must take priority over any outside engagements that students may be offered.

SUPPORTing OUR STUdEnTS

StudEnt wElfaRE

Student welfare is a priority, and we place great emphasis on providing a safe and supportive atmosphere. There is a comprehensive Child Protection Policy in place, and all teaching staff undergo CRB checks. The Head of Junior RnCM is always available to talk to, and there are also trained counsellors and first-aiders amongst our staff.

paREntal involvEMEnt

we understand that parents and carers play a vital role in the support of students and the organisation of daily practice routines. we keep parents updated on student development throughout the year. Parents are invited in to specified lessons to discuss student progress, and detailed written reports are provided at the end of the Summer Term.

There’s a strong support network amongst parents and carers. we hold Parent Forum meetings, which are attended by the Head of Junior RnCM, to provide the opportunity to exchange information. The Friends of the Junior RnCM also provides an important social network for parents and carers, and raises money towards our bursary fund.

At the RnCM we hold many public concerts throughout the year, both informal and formal, which include Foundation Section concerts, Chamber Music and Composers’ concerts, festivals, Spotlight concerts, and our Performance days which showcase all our orchestras and ensembles. Some of our students are also offered the opportunity to give concerto performances across a range of genres. All student performances are recorded by the Junior RnCM to aid student learning.

Externally, the Junior RnCM presents more than 15 concerts at venues as far afield as Nottingham, Leeds, Penrith and Stafford, as well as at other venues closer to home, such as Chester, Bolton, Stockport, Middlewich and the wirral.

whilst competition within the Junior RnCM is discouraged, participation in external festivals and competitions gives our students invaluable experience, and our staff encourage students to take part where appropriate, with the Head of Junior RnCM’s approval.

Our students take part in regular masterclasses with eminent musicians and performers. Our most recent masterclasses have been given by such distinguished artists as oboist Hansjörg Schellenberger, clarinettist Maximiliano Martin, trumpeter John Miller, bassoonist Stefano Canuti, violinist Paavo Pohjola, pianist Jussi Siiralä, violist Thomas Riebl, flautist Noémi Gyōri, clarinettist Reiner wehle, percussionist Eric Sammut, and oboist Alex Klein.

intERnational paRtnERSHipS

The Junior RnCM has well-established exchange programmes with the Junior Sibelius Academy in Finland, and the Royal irish Academy of Music in dublin, which give chamber ensembles from each institution the opportunity to travel to the other to perform. A similar exchange programme with the grieg Academy in Bergen, norway has recently commenced.

Students who take part are tutored by experienced overseas professionals, and are able to share and learn about other approaches to music study and performance.

I’m in my fifth year at JRNCM and have enjoyed wonderful performance opportunities: solos, quartets, chamber orchestra, and playing in external concerts. i’ve been encouraged to audition successfully for the national Youth String Academy, Pro Corda, and the national Youth Orchestra. i hope to go on to study music in a conservatoire, and have a career as a musician. what could be better than a career doing something you love!

wHo attEndS tHE JunioR RnCM?

Our students generally range in age from 8 to 18 and come from all walks of life and a wide catchment area. we typically have around 200 gifted, talented and highly motivated musicians as students at any one time. They all have one thing in common: they are normal young people with an extraordinary talent.

As a rough guide, we are looking for at least ABRSM grade 5 with distinction, though we appreciate that some of our youngest applicants may not yet have attained this. One of the key things we look for is the ability of our potential students to cope with and thrive in the intense and rewarding environment here at the Junior RnCM. if you’re unsure, talk to your music teacher about your abilities or visit us on our Open day and chat to some of our staff members.

Most of our students choose to study the piano as it provides them with a strong platform for other areas of musical study (theory, composition etc.) but this is flexible, dependent on the strengths of each individual student.
