ADMINISTRATION

Dear Providence Family,

Every school year is a series of milestones, whether it is Class One students mastering their phonograms, Class Four students enjoying Patriot Day, or Class Eight students visiting Washington, D.C. This past school year, we were blessed to celebrate a very special milestone—Providence’s 25th anniversary. As a society, we are typically conditioned to always look forward, but our 25th anniversary provided a time for us to look back, reflect, and celebrate God’s guiding hand in developing Providence into the fine institution it is today. While each year is special and produces its own memories, this anniversary year was made all the more special by the opportunity to revisit the things that make Providence unique. Whether it was reconnecting with and learning from our founder, Robin Lewis, seeing some of our earliest students reach an age where their children are now applying to the School, or laughing at the “Top 10 Ways You Know You Are At Providence” during the anniversary gala, we saw that much of what we celebrated this past year is the same today as it was twenty-five years ago. Much has changed over the years, most notably our physical campus, but it is the time-tested and true that has enabled Providence to succeed in preparing students to live purposefully and intelligently in the service of God and man. The past twenty-five years have not always been easy and there certainly have been bumps in the road. Still, in I Thessalonians 5:18 Paul tells us, “…in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” It is this spirit of thankfulness, for good times and bad, with which we approached our anniversary celebration. It is easy to be thankful when blessings are plentiful, but it is substantially harder to have a thankful spirit when times are tough. As long as we always seek God’s will in Christ Jesus, and give thanks regardless of the result, we can be certain Providence will celebrate yet another special anniversary in twenty-five more years. The following pages provide just a glimpse of the 2013-2014 school year. It is hard to capture so many wonderful memories in so few pages; but, I hope you will take time to revisit a truly special moment in the history of our school. I also ask that you join me in giving thanks for our first twenty-five years, and in asking God’s blessing on our next twenty-five.

Blessings,

2013 – 2014 ANNUAL REPORT 3

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I want to thank the Providence community for a tremendous 2013-2014 school year. The Board spent significant time this academic year in a strategic planning process, led by board member Robin Pou. This process included the entire Board and School Administration, as well as some faculty members and the Strategic Planning Committee made up of current parents, alumni parents, and an alumna. We worked through confirming the vision for the School, determining strategies around critical objectives, while the Administration came up with tactics to execute the plan. Being able to reflect on the past twenty-five years at the celebration at Lisa and Kenny Troutt’s home was a highlight for us and helped as we planned for the next twenty-five years. Four core committees cover most of the work of the Board: Development, Education, Finance, and Governance: Development: This committee, led by Chris Messick, is responsible for the Annual Fund, the primary fundraiser for the School. The Annual Fund covers the following strategic priorities:

» Sustentation funding » Scholarship dollars above and beyond the two Parents’ Council

Fundraisers (Book Fair and Reading Rally) » Reserve Fund » Capital Improvements

This year, we had a positive operating budget, provided the most scholarship dollars in our history, added to the Reserve Fund, and still had enough funds to upgrade our playground and implement a new clock system. We are thankful for the Annual Fund chairs this year, Elaina and Chris Peterie, and their Class Captains. Education: This committee, led by Debby Smith, is charged with maintaining consistency in our curriculum and overseeing curricular changes proposed by the Administration. If changes are proposed, they are brought to the Board through this committee. Finance: This committee, led by Brian Heflin, provides financial oversight for the School. By God’s grace, our entire campus is completely paid for, with no debt. We also maintain a reserve fund of about $400,000 that is growing, and we have approximately $485,000 in endowment funds. Governance: This committee, led by Tyler Burke, is responsible for updating our bylaws and determining future Board members and officers. We thank the 2013-2014 Board Members for their service and welcome the following Board Members for 2014-2015: Ben Bell, Brian Heflin (Finance Chair), Syd Hurley (added spring 2014), Steve Key, Chris Messick (Development Chair), Jack and Shirley Mechem (Parents’ Council Chairs), Dan Meyer (Governance Chair), Robin Pou (Vice President), Charlie Robinson, Debby Smith (Education Chair), Elizabeth Tamlyn (Secretary), and Kelsie Wagner. We also thank Tyler Burke and Mauri Tardy for their longtime service on the Board, as well as Gini and John Florer for their service as Parents’ Council Chairs and Board members this past year. Please pray for the Board that we would serve Providence well in 2014-2015. We will also be in prayer for you, our wonderful Providence community.

25TH ANNIVERSARY EVENTS

During the 2013-2014 school year we took time out to celebrate Providence’s 25th anniversary. Reaching this milestone was meaningful in so many ways; but most importantly, it was a testament to the School’s success in developing students of character through a classical, Christ-centered education.

Our yearlong celebration enabled us to offer thanks to God for His providence as the School reached maturity, and to recognize the people He entrusted to help shepherd its growth over the years. We hope you will enjoy a look back at the events commemorating the School’s anniversary.

CHAPEL OF THANKSGIVINGOn September 6, 2013, we held the first of our anniversary events, a special dedication ceremony that helped to kick off the school year and to offer our praise and thanks to God for His watching over Providence the past twenty-five years.

25TH GRANDPARENTS’ DAYThe oldest and most special of Providence’s many traditions is Grandparents’ Day, held the Friday prior to Thanksgiving. On November 22, 2013, students once again performed many beloved recitations, songs, and historical speeches.

PROVIDENCE GOLF TOURNAMENTOn October 29, 2013, Providence dad and PGA pro, Justin Leonard, conducted a clinic prior to our school’s first Providence Golf Tournament. Providence Alumni parent, Cindy Sloan, helped organize forty parents and alumni parents for the tournament held at Old American Golf Club.

HOMECOMINGOn October 24, 2013, hundreds of alums, current students, parents, and faculty turned out to watch Providence battle Inspired Vision, and to enjoy a few treats cooked up by parents and staff.

25TH ANNIVERSARY GRAND CELEBRATION

25TH ANNIVERSARY GRAND CELEBRATIONWith more than 400 parents, alumni, faculty, and staff in attendance, Providence concluded its 25th anniversary year with a festive dinner and program at Lisa and Kenny Troutt’s home on March 29, 2014. John Cox, father of five children who all attend Providence, led a time of reminiscing, remembering, and honoring. Providence parents, Janie Bell and Doug Chesnut, performed a hilarious skit with funny anecdotes about the School’s history, while Marlyn Becker and Andy Turner sang an entertaining duet about carpool, which had been performed in years past at Back-to-School Night. A video, provided by Providence parent, Mickey Holden, about the School’s history reminded those in attendance of the early days of our school. Providence music teachers, Nicki Jordan and John Hendricks, performed “This

is a Time to Remember,” accompanied by Dave Leeman on piano. Providence Board President, Tommy McBride, closed the program with prayer followed by a hymn medley performed by renowned pianist, Stephen Nielson, father of Providence Alumnae, Caroline and Christiana. Guests then met outside for dessert and coffee while listening to the music of former Providence student, Brad Cooper. A special thank you to the Event Co-Chairmen: Jennie and Tom Gilchrist, Rebecca and Bobby Lutz, Elizabeth and Charlie Robinson along with Honorary Chairmen and Pioneering Parents: Laura and Charles Clift, Judy Darby, Carolyn and Bill Foose, Robin and Michael Lewis, Margaret and Keet Lewis, Diana and Bob Reagan, Sara Staley, and Bonnie and Doug Thompson.

YEAR IN PICTURESThe 2013-2014 school year produced its own special memories—from petting zoo visits for our Kindergarten students and phonogram parties in Class One, to “Remembering the Alamo” for Class Seven and the Washington, D.C. trip for Class Eight. We can think of no better way to revisit these special moments than by sharing the many wonderful photos that help capture these events in our school’s life.

MARSHA FREDERICK: “LABOR OMNIA VINCIT” - WORK CONQUERS ALL!One of the distinctive characteristics of a Providence education is our Latin program. Latin is a difficult language to learn, but much more difficult to teach. However, we have been blessed for many years to have two of the finest Classics teachers, not just in Texas, but in all of the United States, in Donna Gerard and Marsha Frederick.

It is with a bittersweet sense of emotion that we recognize Marsha this year—sweet because of the excellence and enthusiasm with which she has taught Latin for seven years at Providence, but bitter because the 2014-2015 school year will be her last. Marsha, who currently teaches Classes Four, Five, and Six Latin, is retiring from full-time teaching, though she will keep busy with some educational consulting and other projects. Just this past summer, she helped prepare a professional education program for the Elementary Teachers of Latin conference in New York, one of whom remarked afterward, “I had no idea you could do all these different kinds of things with little

kids and Latin!” Adds Donna Gerard, “Marsha is a marvelous colleague. She has pushed me to work harder and try new things as we taught side-by-side. I will miss her very much.” Thank you Magistra Frederick, and we can think of no better way to remember you than to highlight the outstanding results you helped produce during the 2013-2014 school year on the National Exploratory Latin Exam and the National Latin Exam.

LE’SHAI MASTON, TRAFFIC, TURF, AND TRACKThe person with perhaps the most diverse set of job responsibilities at Providence is the ever-ebullient Le’Shai Maston. We first became familiar with Le’Shai as he directed morning carpool at the Lovers Lane exit, doing so with such style and joy that even people outside of Providence noticed his energy. Soon, we came to learn that Le’Shai, a Dallas police officer since 1999, was also a former football player of distinction, having played for state champion Dallas Carter in high school, Baylor University in college, and the Houston Oilers, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Washington Redskins in the NFL. More importantly, we learned that Le’Shai is a man of strong faith. Of course, he was then “encouraged” to begin coaching the Providence football team, and soon also took over the reins of the track team. We thank Le’Shai for the spirit, joy, and love he shares with us each and every day.

NATIONAL LATIN EXAMFor the 2013-2014 school year, 74% of Providence students received awards. 99% of Class Six students received awards; 81% of Class Seven; 43% of Class Eight. The Providence students are a year or two younger than their counterparts who take this exam. Five students in Class Six made perfect scores on the Introduction to Latin Exam and two Class Seven students made a perfect score on the Latin I Exam. Congratulations on a job well done! Only 447 students of over 19,900 who participated in the entire United States, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Guam, England, Italy, Poland, Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, South Korea, France, Oman, Philippines, Spain, Japan, Germany, Singapore, Zimbabwe, and the Netherlands attained this distinction. We had five students this year who achieved this honor.

2014 NATIONAL EXPLORATORY LATIN EXAMClass Five Latin achieved outstanding results on the NELE. Four students earned perfect scores on the exam: Robert Pou, Ava Love, Sophie McNeill, and Juliet Moore. Seventeen students earned Summa Cum Laude gold medals; sixteen students earned Magna Cum Laude silver medals. Cum Laude bronze medals were earned by five students. Eighty one percent of the Class Five students earned awards.

PATRIOT GOLD CLUBEach year we celebrate teachers and staff who have worked at least ten years at Providence. We thank all of them for their dedicated service and devotion to our children.

DUKE TIPOur teachers prepare our students well, and the results are reflected in the Duke Talent Identification Program (TIP). The Duke TIP identifies students across the nation who score in the 95th percentile on grade-level achievement tests. 94% of our Class Seven students qualified, and 18 of the 30 who qualified took the SAT as part of Duke University’s 7th Grade Talent Search. Participation is completely voluntary. Of the eighteen Providence Class Seven students who took the test, one student received Grand Recognition and seven students received State Recognition.

GIVING

For 2013-14, two of Providence’s most treasured traditions, the Reading Rally and Book Fair, generated nearly $120,000 for our scholarship fund. The Reading Rally raised $96,388 and the Book Fair $21,129. Direct donations to the

scholarship fund and a portion of our Annual Fund contributions increased the scholarship budget to over $380,000, which allowed the school to grant scholarships to fifty-four deserving students.

Providence is proud to have so many wonderful organizations support its fundraising efforts. We thank the following companies for their assistance during the 2013-2014 school year:

Congratulations to the Providence “Seniors” of the Class of 2014, formerly Class Eight 2010, who graduated from area high schools and moved on to the following colleges. Their foundation here at Providence enabled them to excel at their high schools and be accepted to fine colleges in Texas and around the country.
