Keynote Speakers Conférenciers d’honneur Diana Beresford-Kroeger Diana Beresford-Kroeger

Botanist, medical biochemist, author and activist DIANA BERESFORD-KROEGER possesses a unique combination of western scientific training and an understanding of the knowledge and methods of a wide variety of traditional and alternative sources. She works to bring a better understanding and appreciation of

the scientific complexities of nature to the general public. Beresford-Kroeger's concept of bioplanning challenges ordinary people to develop a new relationship with the natural world, to view the environment as a biological system and to perform the ecological task of replanting the global forest. Her books include The Sweetness of a Simple Life, The Global Forest, Arboretum Borealis: A Lifeline of the Planet, Arboretum America, and A Garden for Life. Beresford-Kroeger was inducted as a Wings Worldquest fellow in 2010, she was elected as a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society in 2011, and in 2016 the Society named her one of 25 women explorers of Canada. A feature documentary about her work, Call of the Forest: The Forgotten Wisdom of Trees, appeared in 2017. Friday, April 6th, 2018, at 11:15 a.m. (Metropolitan Ballroom)

Anne Whiston Spirn Anne Whiston Spirn Anne Whiston Spirn is the Cecil and Ida Green Professor of Landscape Architecture and Planning at MIT. The American Planning Association named her first book, The Granite Garden (1984), as one of the 100 most important books of the 20th century, crediting it with launching the ecological

urbanism movement. Since 1987, Spirn has directed the West Philadelphia Landscape Project (www.wplp.net), whose mission is to restore nature and rebuild community through strategic design, planning, and education programs. WPLP employs landscape literacy as a cornerstone of community development and served as a laboratory for Spirn’s second book, The Language of Landscape (1998). Other award-winning books continued to develop the concept of landscape literacy as part of the larger subject of visual literacy and visual thinking: Daring to Look (2008), and The Eye Is a Door (2014). Before coming to MIT in 2000, Spirn taught at the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard and before that worked at Wallace McHarg Roberts and Todd on diverse projects, including the Toronto Central Waterfront. Spirn is the recipient of numerous awards, including a Guggenheim fellowship and Japan’s International Cosmos Prize for “contributions to the harmonious coexistence of nature and mankind.” Her homepage is a gateway to her work and activities: see www.annewhistonspirn.com. OALA’s 50th Celebration and Awards Ceremony The OALA’s 50th Celebration and Awards Ceremony will be held at Palais Royale. The 2018 OALA Awards Ceremony will begin at 6:15 p.m., followed by a reception and then dinner at 8:00p.m. Great food, live music and a social atmosphere will offer fellow landscape architects and guests a memorable evening to celebrate OALA’s Golden Anniversary. Islands Tour 1-4 pm, $55 A guided walking tour of the Toronto Islands looking at recent impacts of flooding. Talking points and group work will include questions such as: What mitigation efforts have been implemented 1 year since the floods? What could have been done differently? And why? This tour will be both on foot and by bus.

Morning Exercise - Run6:30-7:15 am, $10 Get energized for the day with an outdoor run along the waterfront or Harbourfront neighbourhood. The generally flat, paved road run will be about 5km in distance and will be led by a guide who will point out some sites of significance. Please bring your own towel and water bottle if needed.

Trillium Park at Ontario Place 3-5 pm, $50 The Trillium Park tour is a guided walking tour through the first phase of the redevelopment of the Ontario Place grounds. The tour will follow the William G Davis trail highlighting the unique element of the park such as the Pre-Cambrian bluff, the native tree and perennial plantings, recognition of First Nations heritage and the spectacular views of the park, lake and beyond. Bus transportation to Trillium Park and back to hotel is included.

From Sherbourne Common through Sugar Beach, Queens Quay and the Wave Decks, projects have been designed and led by landscape architects to provide stormwater management, marine habitat, recreation and vibrant public spaces. On this walking tour of the central waterfront, LA’s involved in the planning and construction of these projects will offer insights on the featured spaces and give an overview of the 25-year plan that will see Toronto’s waterfront restored from industry to a public amenity.

Sustainability in the City: Downtown Green Roof Development 3-5 pm, $35 The City of Toronto has a number of policies and programs that support sustainable development including the Green Roof Bylaw, the Green Development Standard and the Eco-Roof Incentive Program. This walking tour includes downtown sites that feature urban agriculture, urban island heat reduction and cultural heritage. The Native Child and Family Services of Toronto integrate traditional practices of the community into the space adding cultural significance to the green roof. In addition to walking, tour participants will use public transit.

Planning ahead for this growth will ensure a high quality of life and complete communities for future generations. It is imperative that the quantity, quality and variety of parks and public realm address the needs of our growing population. A walking tour of downtown Toronto will showcase how key ideas such as the proposed Rail Deck Park, rethinking University Avenue, stitching together new and existing parks to form the Core Circle, and reimagining overlooked spaces will put parks and public realm first in our planning framework and transform the downtown core.
