PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Having been a PRSM member well before the first Best Practices Book was released in 2010, I recall the days of exchanging this valuable information however we could – through individual calls and emails, networking with our peers at conferences, and discuss-ing opportunities with our current and prospective service providers. Although those avenues and more are still available, the creation of the Best Practices book brought to life a vision that started long ago. I want to thank everyone who has authored a Best Practice for publication, as well as applaud those who have served on the Best Practices Committee for their vision and efforts in bringing this valu-able tool to fruition.

This year’s compilation of case stud-ies measures up to its predecessors in content, covering a myriad of mainte-nance topics as well as management and technology. To accompany the release of the 2015 Book, this issue of Professional Retail Store Maintenance magazine includes additional commen-tary from many of this year’s authors,

BRYAN WALKER, STORE FACILITIES MANAGER, THE CONTAINER STORE

2015-2016 PRESIDENT, PRSM ASSOCIATION BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Fill the Other Guy’s Basket to the Brim

AS WE CONTINUE to reflect on the association’s accomplishments during this 20th anniversary year, the annual Best Practices Book stands out as one of our most significant achievements. Now in its sixth year, this annual collection of solutions for multi-site facilities management continues to impress, and it reminds me of the unique connection we share as retail facilities management professionals.

who took extra time to provide us with additional thoughts on their original submissions.

As exhibited by the Best Practices program, PRSM empowers people. Education and networking have been key in allowing us to elevate our game and our industry, and the level of trust and openness that exists within the organization’s membership is what makes it possible.

“Fill the other guy’s basket to the brim. Making money then becomes an easy proposition” is a statement attributed to Andrew Carnegie. It’s also one of The Container Store’s seven values-based Foundation Principles, and it speaks to the spirit of cooperation between busi-ness partners. Crafting mutually benefi-cial, win-win relationships truly benefits both parties in the long run. As exhibited within PRSM, if we take care of the people who are taking care of us, we will be more successful in our mission to keep our stores safe, clean and comfortable. The spirit of partnership between retailers and service providers is what makes PRSM the premier association in our industry, and it is what allows valuable tools like the Best Practices Book to exist.

I’ve seen how much our industry has changed in 20 years, and I’m really excited about what will come in the next 20. PRSM’s best years are still ahead. This is just the start. l
