What is Easter? The Easter Vigil is the “Mother of All Vigils.” Easter Sunday, then, is the greatest of all Sundays, and Easter Time is the most important of all liturgical times. Easter is the celebration of the Lord’s Resurrection from the dead, culminating in his Ascension to the Father and sending of the Holy Spirit upon the Church. There are 50 days of Easter from the first Sunday of Easter to Pentecost. It is characterized, above all, by the joy of glorified life and the victory over death, expressed most fully in the great resounding cry of the Christian, Alleluia! All faith flows from faith in the Resurrection: “If Christ has not been raised, then empty [too] is our preaching; empty, too, is your faith” (1 Cor 15:14).
“What you sow is not brought to life unless it dies. And what you sow is not the body that is to be but a bare kernel of wheat, perhaps, or of some other kind; . . . So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown corruptible; it is raised incorruptible. It is sown dishonorable; it is raised glorious. It is sown weak; it is raised powerful. It is sown a natural body; it “Easter is the celebration of the Lord’s Resurrection from the dead, culminating his Ascension to the Father and sending of the Holy Spirit upon the Church.” is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritu-al one. So, too, it is written, ‘The first man, Adam, became a living being,’ the last Adam a life-giving spirit. But the spiritual was not first; rather the natural and then the spiritual. The first man was from the earth, earthly; the second man, from heaven. As was the earthly one, so also are the earthly, and as is the heavenly one, so also are the heavenly. Just as we have borne the image of the earthly one, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly one” (1 Cor 15:36-37, 42-49).
The Octave of Easter comprises the eight days, which stretch from the first Sunday of Easter to the Second Sunday of Easter. It is a way of pro-longing the joy of the initial day. In a sense, every day of the Octave is like a little Sunday. The word “Easter” comes from Old English, meaning simply the “east.” The sun that rises in the east, bringing light, warmth, and hope, is a symbol for the Christian of the rising Christ, who is the true Light of the world. The Paschal Candle is a central symbol of this divine light, which is Christ. It is kept near the ambo throughout Easter Time and is lit for all liturgical celebrations.

1774-1835 Feast Day—April 10 This foundress, born to a noble family in Verona, Italy, lost her father at age 5 and was abandoned by her mother when she remarried. Choosing religious life over an advantageous marriage, Magdalen first joined the Carmelites, but left when she saw that their strict rules of enclosure would prohibit her charitable works. She began a new community, the Canossian Daughters of Charity, in 1799 by bringing two poor girls into her own home. The institute spread throughout Italy, and Magdalen helped found an order of priests and a third order for laypeople. Canossians minister today in Italy, Latin America and the Philippines. Magdalen,
who was canonized in 1988, famously said, “Those who love are never tired, since love knows no burden.” Copyright © 2021, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Washington, DC. All rights reserved.

At the Easter Sunday liturgy, a liturgical poem called The Easter Sequence is chanted or prayed. The “sequence” (from the Latin word that means “to follow’) normally follows the Second Read-ing and is before the Gospel acclamation. Sequences are sung on important feasts. The Easter Sequence, Victimae Paschali Laudes (Paschal Victim), is attributed to Wipo of Burgundy, who died about 1050 A.D. Wipo was a priest and a chaplain to Emperor Konrad II. As early as the 8th century, sequences appeared in the liturgical celebrations of France and soon spread throughout Europe. Over time, melodies and religious poems were composed to be separate pieces sung at any liturgical feast. The structure of these poems often lent itself to “antiphonal” singing (verses alternating between two choirs or between a soloist and choir). The texts were also often dramatic. The birth of miracle plays is usually attributed to the inspiration of the Easter Sequence, in which Mary Magdalene is asked “Speak, Mary, declaring what you saw, wayfaring.” Her reply makes up the next three verses and the drama of the greatest miracle. At one time, the Church used many sequences throughout the liturgical year. But the Council of Trent (which was convened by Pope Paul III in 1545 and continued until 1563 abolished all but a few. Today a sequence is used on only four feasts, Easter, Pentecost, Corpus Christi, and Our Lady of Sorrows. Today, the faithful proclaim: “Death and life have contended in that combat stupendous: The Prince of life, who died, reigns immortal” (Easter Sequence). At the end of the great Easter season we will proclaim “Bend the stubborn heart and will; Melt the frozen, warm the chill; Guide the steps that go astray” (Pentecost Sequence).
Liturgy Corner Easter Sequence
by Deborah Ferry (taken from the Little Black Book by the Diocese of Saginaw)
Pbro. Santiago Martin. Responsable MARC.
