Proven ExpertisePSE has a distinguished history in specialty lighting with systems design spanning 25 years. We specialize in state-of-the-art lighting systems for energy reduction including, green compliance, luminaire replacement, and LED retrofit. We have completed retrofits for universities, 200-acre high security lighting projects and unique transportation structure lighting for both aboveground and underground for transportation authorities such as the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC), and airports. Our challenging assignments have included advanced dimming systems, touchcontrol lighting, and programmed lighting. In addition, we provide security lighting designs for large campus environments, parking structures, and justice environments.
Energy Cost Analysis/ReductionThe lighting and energy audit is the first step. But intrinsic to development of an energy reduction plan is setting policy regarding amount of light present in the “visible background” as well as that presented to the office worker or student as “task lighting.” This policy driven reduction verifies that worker/student productivity will not suffer and result in additional costs as side effects of re-engineering lighting.
Savings through Sensing/Control/SelectionLighting retrofits in most buildings consist of simple retrofits of lamp product. And, while these efforts may save energy costs, the cost of labor, materials, and re-wiring may outweigh potential savings. Engineering into the project calculable savings by adding controls, energy monitoring, and flexible automated scheduling brings the focus of green savings into a clear illuminated view.
Multi-Disciplined StaffPSE maintains a multi-disciplined in-house team of professionals operating from offices in the Philadelphia area. Our staff includes Professional Engineers registered in fourteen states. Our engineering staff is comprised of talented lighting systems designers as well as electrical, mechanical, and architectural engineers, CADD operators, graphics specialists, and touch screen controls engineers. Our diversity of technical disciplines allows PSE to complete all phases of a project in-house, from inception through completion, including energy savings verification and post-project monitoring.
It is projected that most
existing school facilities can
save 5% of their annual operating facilities budget
by mandating green lighting
initiatives. This projects to
save billions of dollars in
carbon based emissions.
Intelligent controls are
the critical link to energy
savings, while visual impact,
color rendition, and overall
appearance yield the most desired
response. Incorporating
style with appearance into
an intelligent building
concept melds conservation
with stainability.

3D Acoustical Analysis
PSE designed and developed CANVAS®, a powerful software tool that provides clear, 3D graphic representation of acoustical factors to achieve accurate acoustical analysis. CANVAS® is an acronym for Computerized Analysis of Noise Vibration Acoustics and Sound. It is used in the pre-design phase of a project. CANVAS® can avert costly architectural errors. It has provided the basis for acoustical design solutions for a variety of projects completed by our Acoustics experts for more than ten years.
Well received by Acoustics professionals at its debut in 1991 at New York City’s Audio Engineering Society, CANVAS® has a vast database containing the properties of absorptive and reflective materials.
This easy-to-use program yields high-resolution, color graphics representing these important factors:
• Architectural space features • Noise control of adjacent
spaces• Noise control for mechanical
equipment• Evaluation of acoustical and
noise-reduced environments
CANVAS® is proprietary property of PSE

Washington, DC
Fencing & Facility Hardening Design & CommissioningSaint Elizabeths Hospital
PSE’s specialized
experience in forensic facilities
includes the first psychiatric
institution in America, Friends Hospital, as well
as the nation’s first federal psychiatric
facility, Saint Elizabeths.
Our experience in secure
environments, while being sensitive to
humane needs, sets our firm
apart from ordinary
design firms.
Our team provided facility hardening and perimeter security design for the new hospital. This involved working with a single building which would be divided into a secure side requiring a perimeter solution and a non-secure side with no perimeter requirements. Since this was a single connected building, PSE developed plans to separate the building using perimeter fencing and barriers which would span the exterior walls and rooftop to provide the necessary separation.
Our design provided three perimeter types, to include a 12’ high nuisance fence separating a historical public cemetery from the hospital grounds, a 15’ high arched fence which included a fiber optic intrusion detection system, and a taut wire detection barrier. The taut wire detection barrier and arched fence provided the necessary perimeter to deter, detect, and delay any attempt at escape from residents located on the secure side of the facility.
Our perimeter design was integrated into our other electronic security system components including access control, security communications, perimeter lighting and video surveillance providing seamless integration between each of the hospital’s security systems for the perimeter of the building. This allowed security personnel to respond quickly to any disturbance along the perimeter by utilizing automatic call-up of lighting, communication, and video surveillance when either the taut wire or arched perimeter fence had been disturbed.
The Pre-design report serves as a foundation for the next stages of the project and for the design basis of the project. Our staff established the initial, high-level functional security requirements.

Ridgewood, New Jersey
Professional Systems Engineering, LLC provided engineering services for the design and construction of a new administration building for the West Bergen Mental Health Facility in Ridgewood, NJ. PSE designed the Tele/Data infrastructure for the facility’s enterprise IT network and VoIP phone system including the structured cabling system for a highly-available IP network and Wi-Fi antenna layout for optimal signal coverage.
An RFP was prepared after construction started to procure high-speed network switches, 802.11n Wireless-N Wi-Fi access points, IP telephones and a modularly customizable and expandable VoIP telephone system.
PSE also designed the electronic security systems including IP Video Surveillance, Intercom, Paging, Staff Duress, and Access Control. These systems were integrated for streamlined control from a touchscreen control workstation.
Standalone Audio/Visual systems were designed for the conference rooms while infrastructure for a building-wide television system provided cable television or blu-ray video to the facility’s waiting, media, and group rooms. A sound masking system was designed for hallways and adjacent offices for privacy and HIPAA compliance.

30 YEARS + STRATEGY + SPECIFICATIONS + TECHNOLOGY
Professional Systems Engineering, LLC provided services for many projects. This encompassed audio, visual, video, acoustical and noise and vibration control systems. Systems ranged in variety from sophisticated remote control audiovisual systems with surround sound and comprehensive acoustical and vibration control planning to automated video “mock” courtroom electronics and remote control systems.
Acoustics and noise vibration control studies were developed for large classrooms and auditorium spaces throughout the campus in a wide variety of applications. These included:
❖ Annenberg School of Communications ❖ Medical School - Historic Amphitheater ❖ Leidy Laboratories Auditorium ❖ Chemistry Auditorium ❖ Myerson Laboratories Auditorium ❖ Law School ❖ Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania
Our audio/visual experience started in the amphitheater that painter Thomas Eakins made famous, in his painting The Agnew Clinic (University of Pennsylvania, 1889), which still hangs outside of this marvelous room. State-of-the-art A/V and distribution systems were added to many spaces while vibration analysis using calibrated accelerometers were employed to reduce transformer noise.
Our staff ‘s association with
the university extends back to 1982 when
communications work included
multiplexing for ARPANET,
predecessor to the Internet. New
underground communications
networks with ductwork systems,
which are still employed today, laid the ground-
work for modern communication
needs.
