Psittacus Catalonia has one of thelargest parrot captive breeding cen-tres in the EU. We currently havemore than 300 pairs of African Greyin our facilities.
This species was chosen given itsoutstanding qualities and aptitudes:nice character, intelligence, beautyand the ability to speak makingsense. In addition, its size is suitableto use it as a pet bird, it shows agregarious tendency and its habitsare not too noisy.
Our babies are hand-reared sincethey hatch in order to improve theiradaptation to our homes and fostertheir social character.
All this enables us to breed healthy, docile, familiar with humans and, therefore, excellent pets that will nottake long to talk.

The African Grey Parrots in our cen-tre belong to the type original fromthe Democratic Republic of Congo(former Zaire). The African GreyParrots belonging to the popula-tions from this area are the heaviestand biggest within the species.
Our breeding centre is completelyfree of the diseases that affect somany breeding centres around theworld: PBFD, PDD, polyomavirus, psittacosis… The preventive tasksof our vets and that of the collabo-rating analysis and pathology cen-tres ensure continued optimalsanitary conditions.
Pairs are housed in suspendedcages and concentrate their repro-ductive activity in the warmestmonths of the year, following thenatural cycles of our Mediterraneanarea.
Their diet combines a broad base ofour extruded food (PSITTACUSBreeding High Energy Formula andPSITTACUS Maintenance HighEnergy Formula) as well as freshfruit and vegetables, dried seedsand germinated seeds.

Babies and fertile eggs are the final result of our task in the breeding centre.According to the time of year and depending on the environmental tempera-tures, we artificially incubate the eggs or we let the parents do it themselves.
We have the necessary equipment to opt at any given moment for artificialincubation and hand-rearing from day one.
As a whole, the nursery equipment and incubating room include: broodersand incubators, thermoregulated shelves and a wide temperature-controlledroom where we leave the trays with the babies in optimal comfort conditions.
In any case, all our babies are hand-reared in our nursery since a very earlyage.
This means delicate, systematic and continuous work for our team of caregivers. The hatching eggs and the babies require maximum attention for long hoursthat go from early morning to late night hours, every day of the week.

The parrots are delivered to theirnew owners either while still eatinghand-feeding formula or alreadyweaned. We can offer an AfricanGrey Parrot of any age to the per-son wishing to adopt one. From theyoungest, delivered when they are70 days old, to birds older than 4months which do not need to takehand-feeding formula and havebeen trained to a basic level.
We strive to make the adoption pro-cess and the adaptation to the newenvironment as easy as possible. Each chick is delivered togetherwith a kit adapted to the bird’s agewith all the necessary equipment tocare for it: hand-feeding formula, feeding tubes and syringes, extru-ded food, treats for the trainingprocess, and our manual (whichhelps the new owner welcome andadapt the African Grey Parrot to itsnew home). Daily, in our nursery, the birds are trained according totheir age. The new owner learnshow to continue this task. We alsooffer our customers phone adviceand support as needed.
The babies are delivered with therelevant legal documents, ringed(with a closed ring), SOIVRE (CITES)registered, sexed, and with a vetcertificate ensuring they have un-dergone all the tests that guaranteethey are in good health conditionsand free of PBFD, polyomavirus andpsittacosis.

Our range of products for birds is theresult of the research programmescarried out in our breeding centreand collaborating breeding centres.
New products are developed andimprove continuously thanks to thesystematic interaction between ourtwo main work areas: breeding andnutrition.
The most demanding judges ofhand-feeding formula or extrudedfood are the birds themselves, which appreciate the appeal of ourproducts and show the quality ofthe ingredients used to make themin their plumage.
We proudly confirm year after yearthe increase in use of our products.

22 Food
Our products: extruded foods, hand-feeding formulas and specific productsformulated with the foremost criterion of achieving maximum nutritionalquality in order to guarantee the best possible health conditions and to fos-ter reproduction in captivity, leaving aside the economic cost of that. For thisreason, we only use noble feeding products.
Extruded foods are balanced mixtures that make it impossible for the bird topick because they are consumed as a whole. They can add up to 100% of thebird’s diet, although they leave room to add other foods to offer variety, aslong as the extruded food does not amount to less than 70-80% of the total.Fresh fruit and vegetables can be given as a complement without limits.Making the extruded food appealing is fundamental in the case of birdsand this is one of our main achievements.
Hand-feeding formulas deserve special mention given the difficulty of their de-velopment and formulation. The quality of a formula mix determines the growthof a bird, especially when this is the only food the bird eats since hatching. Ourhand-feeding formulas (Neonatal, High Energy, High Protein, Mini…) ensureall you can expect from a good formula: very high growth rates, best diges-tive health, strong immune system, excellent plumage development, easyemancipation of the babies, easiness to prepare… In other words: quality, safety and appealing taste.

Within the group of specific pro-ducts, the ones destined to loriesare especially worth mentioning(Lories Gel and Lories Nectar). Twocomplementary products to intro-duce a new concept in lories’ diet.
Our products contain cereal, pulses, oilseeds, vegetable oils, sugar, driedvegetables (leaves, flowers and fruit),minerals, vitamins and additives toimprove the product –in particular, natural antioxidants and extracts, andprebiotics. Thanks to these compo-nents and to the subsequent specialpreparation procedure, we make themost out of the food and we preventpossible digestive problems (this isan especially important aspect in thecase of formula-fed chicks).
Our nutritionists have observed thatthe selection of the appropriate oils isfundamental in the diet of psittacines.
For this reason, we combine the useof a tropical oil, palm oil, with othernoble vegetal oils, high in oleic andOmega 6 and Omega 3 fatty acids.
Our feeding products are preparedfollowing an extrusion system. Ex-trusion is a process by which thepreviously water-dampened food is“cooked” and expanded. To do so,the food undergoes high pressureand temperature for a brief periodof time, and after that, it is dried andcooled.
This process increases the digesti-bility of the nutrients and sensiblyimproves the taste of the product. With that, we make the food moreappealing, its use more efficient andthe droppings reduced. In addition, extrusion is without a doubt the bestsystem to ensure microbiologicalfood safety.

HAND-FEEDING FORMULA
Hand-feeding formula Suitable for hand-feeding parrot babies and as support diet for sick adultsbeing treated. They have been formulated so as to add up to 100% of thebaby parrot diet during the growing stage: from hatching to emancipation.During the weaning stage, hand-feeding formula will be gradually replacedby the solid foods best suited to each species.
Check the description of the hand-feeding formulas and choose the mostsuitable according to the characteristics and age of the chick you are raising. As a general rule, medium and large size parrots eat between 7 ml and 10ml of formula on each feeding for every 100 g of body weight. The smallpsittacines eat more: up to 16 ml for every 100 g of body weight.
The concentration of solid food recommended when preparing the hand-feeding formula is 20-25%.
High Energy Hand-feeding FormulaThis is a follow-on hand-feeding formula. It is designed to hand-rear the chicksfrom the moment the quills of the plumage start to show, for the parrot spe-cies that require fat-rich diets: African Grey Parrots, macaws, poicephalus…It contains the most suitable vegetable fat for these species: palm oil.
It also contains papaya, which favours bowel movements. We recommend itsuse up to emancipation.

Lories Gel and Lories Nectar These are two complete food products for lories. We recommend giving it dry:the lories will lick the powder when they become adapted to eating food suppliedthis way. It can also be given as a watery suspension (like a formula).
Both products are complementary and they should be made freely accessi-ble and placed in different feeders. The birds will take a greater o smalleramount of one or the other product according to their needs.
The Lories Gel stands out for its greater content in protein and the Loris Nectarfor its higher content in carbohydrates.
The Lories Gel can also be used for lories or other fruit-eating species inorder to enrich their diet by sprinkling the powdered gel on the fruit.
The Lories Gel contains pollen, dried egg, dried hibiscus flower, vegetablepigments, prebiotics… The Lories Nectar contains dried apple and papaya, and fructose (the sugar in fruit)…

COMPLEMENTS
ComplementsPsittacus Catalonia devotes its best effort to the development of specificcomplete feeding products (extruded food and hand-feeding formulas),since their use ensures optimal and balanced nutrition for the birds.
However, the breeders usually give the birds mixed diets combining wholefood products with seeds mixtures.
This type of diet offers the benefit of a greater variety of food, which entailsa richer environment, but it also means deficiency of some nutrients. Seedmixtures are especially deficient in calcium and some vitamins and traceelements.
It is also common for the seeds to be supplied germinated. This has the be-nefit to take advantage of the nutritional improvement and greater appeal ofthe sprouting process, but it also entails a health risk if sprouts grow mouldor bacteria proliferate during the process.
The products described have the objective to enable the improvement andcorrection of the deficits of the seed mixtures and make their use easy whengiving mixed diets.
Calcium GritThe seeds are especially low in calcium. Parrots are perfectly capable to regu-late the intake of calcium-rich food according to their needs. Complementingthe diet with powder calcium products prevents calcium excessive intake.Calcium Grit is made of several calcium carbonate sources, all thickly groun-ded. Mixing Calcium Grit with the seeds makes it possible for the birds tochoose to eat it only if needed.
Package: 5 kg bag
Vitamin-Mineral SupplementVitamin-Mineral Supplement is used to correct vitamin, mineral and traceelement deficits typical of seed mixtures.
It is a powdered product created to be added to the moist mixture of sprouts, fruit and vegetables.
