PSYCHIC EQUALIZER

Psychic Equalizer is the proyect that Spanish pianist and composer Hugo Selles started back in 2011. The main musical aim of Psychic Equalizer was to mix several genres of music to create a style in which Selles could express himself without any limits. While there is a clear tendency towards jazz and improvisation in its most contemporary approach as well as towards the complex structures and rhythms of progressive rock; the incorporation of elements of alternative rock, classical music, ambient and experimental are also remarkable. Memories From A Cold Place was the first album to be released by Psychic Equalizer.

Published in 2012, it was considered a very promosing first effort, which ended up being nominated to the 5th Annual Hollywood Music in Media Awards, newage/ambient category. Following this debut came the critically acclaimed Madrid [or Suite For The Solitary

Contemporary Citizen] and the live EP Live Memories, recorded during the 6th Week

of the Unusual Music in Santander (Spain). The new album The Lonely Traveller was recorded in Copenhagen in 2016 and released

last January. Recently awarded with three silver medals (outstanding achievement) at the Global Music Awards* (album, composition/composer and musical style: art jazz/rock), it keeps receiving wonderful reviews and comments from the jazz, newage/ambient and progressive rock scenes. While the eclecticism and virtuosic aspect of Psychic Equalizer is going to attract the ears of the most adventurous fans of great jazz fusion artists such as Pat Metheny, Chick Corea, Mike Oldfield; its catchy hooks and rock rhythms will definitely engage especially those music lovers who grew up with bands like Genesis, Pink Floyd or Camel. After a really successful release concert, which was held at Metronomen (Frederiskberg) on January 21st; Psychic Equalizer will be back on the road on July. Three dates announced so far: Koncert Kirken (Copenhagen), II Jazz Festival of Reinosa (Spain) and Sala Clamores (Madrid, Spain). For the concert in Copenhagen, the touring band will be joined by a string quartet. “We don't consider size of fan base, popularity or level of record sales. Global Music Awards is a merit based competition. We judge and curate based on creativity and quality of musical craft. We look for emotional communication, the ability to transcend, to make the listener experience something that is new and compelling. We want to be surprised and moved by what we hear. We want to be convinced that those we honor can really move an audience. The musical joy of artists we select must be infectious. We want the artist to remind us why we care about music so much in the first place. Our judging process honors both polished artists and those in which we sense future potential.”

THE LONELY TRAVELLER

The Lonely Traveller tells the story of the journey from adolescence to adulthood; a time of becoming more conscious about the surrounding world: discovering the injustices and inequalities on our planet, dealing with loneliness and solitude, overcoming doubts and facing challenges, and experiencing the all-encompassing beauty of love. Through the universal human themes expressed in the music and the multicultural cover art, this album is a statement of support for equality and human rights. People in this world, no matter their ethnicity, religion, appearance, gender, sexuality or nationality, deserve a decent and happy life. To help the listener follow and identify with the story, there is a poetic text accompanying each track.

• “The musical genres featured on The Lonely Traveller are very varied indeed. From track

to track (and even within one) we can hear jazz, chamber music, symphonic rock, electronic experimental music, classical piano, and more. The moods range from very melodic to grandiose, with some detours in hard rock or electronic.”

Marc Roy / ProgGnosis

• “An album that inspires and engages on many levels, The Lonely Traveller provides a journey you’ll be willing to take again and again. It may not be an album for all occasions, but when the mood fits, it truly is a thing of beauty.

Steven Reid / Sea Of Tranquility

• “The music cannot be categorized because it stands on its own as a work of art and sincere craftsmanship.”

Keith Hannaleck / Muzik Man Productions

• “Music of Psychic Equalizer is a combination of sniping precision, instrumental skill and realization that in music you can do anything you want. The result are twelve impeccably constructed coherent songs […] Seems like the hard task of creating something new in jazz is not that hard when you give it to the right people, and Psychic Equalizer are surely these kind of men. They don’t try to get the hype, instead they do what they feel like doing the most. That’s why “The Lonely Traveller” is full of life, professionalism and comfort. They all know their strengths and limitations (for example, Selles has no limits!) and they do implement this into their music creating a sophisticated piece of music which is a little gem in the jazz book.”
