Public Advocate Letitia James had her day in court Wednesday representing aHonduran teen who entered the country alone and was fighting to stay here.
James acted as a lawyer for the 16yearold immigrant in Brooklyn family courtand successfully petitioned for him to get special juvenile status, which will likelyallow him to stay in New York.
Keybi, 16, who is now living with a cousin in East New York, Brooklyn, said hefled to the United States because he was threatened by rampant violence in hishometown of La Ceiba.
“There was a lot of really bad gang violence in Honduras,” he said. “I was reallyafraid.”
James had previously pledged to personally serve as a pro bono lawyer, as sheappealed for other attorneys to volunteer to represent unaccompanied kids whoflooded into the country. At least 3,000 have landed in New York.

and to provide him a better future, I think it’s in the court’s best interest...to havehim stay,” she said of her young client.
Keybi’s dad died when he was 12, the same year his mother sent him to live withan aunt. He crossed the U.S.Mexico border on his own last March on hissecond attempt and was found by border patrol agents who sent him to livewith cousin Francisco Avila, 52.
He’s now a sophomore at Progress High School, and wants to grow up to be alawyer.
“He plays soccer in school and we go to church together every Sunday,” Avilasaid. “He’s doing very well.”
James said she was happy to have a sympathetic judge — Adam Silvera, whosaid it would be “cruel and unjust” to send the boy back — for her first courtroomappearance in years.
“It’s been a while,” she said, adding she would again represent Keybi at ahearing in immigration court in May to get a deportation order against himdropped.
