One design is based on the Fal River Estuary; the second on Morgawr, the prehistoric-looking creature who is said to live in the Falmouth Bay; and the third on waves. The two other seats further along in Market Street; these are only seats between the Moor and Event Square. Where will it be? The new seat will be at the corner on Market Strand and Killigrew Street, outsides Rowes bakers next to Superdrug. What’s the idea? As well as a resting place, the seat should be a memorable focal point, a feature that people really like, and one that celebrates Falmouth’s identity and uniqueness through distinctive design. Practically , the seat should be comfortable and hard- wearing, as well as helping people to arrange meeting or drop-off locations. It should appeal to all users of the town but will be especially useful to elderly people, and people with restricted mobility who may need to rest more frequently. Until recently there was nowhere to sit down between either ends of Falmouth. The Moor, Prince of Wales Pier and, to a limited extent , Events Square have places to rest, but inbetween there was no opportunity for people to sit down in the street. Last summer two benches were installed in Market Street which has alleviated the problem to some degree. The new seat has been instigated by the Falmouth Business Improvement District (BID) as part of a wider programme of developments to improve how residents and visitors experience the town. A New Seat for Market Street01.Introduction

- Falmouth is getting a new seat - celebrating the town’s creative spirit and its artistic heritage

- Using ideas from children at Falmouth School, three options for the seat design have been developed

- Your vote is now invited - which one do you like best?

Practically, the seat should be comfortable and hard-wearing, as well as helping people to arrange meeting or drop-off locations.

For more information on BID please see www.falmouth.ac.uk

The Development of the Ideas02.Workshops were held at Falmouth School facilitated by local design company Mor to generate ideas and explore possibilities. The children were encouraged to think about what is really special about Falmouth and to be creative through drawing and writing.

From this pool of ideas, three designs for benches have been developed. Some drawings from the workshops at Falmouth School are shown below. The final designs are on the next page.

Text on the seat, like on a map, marks “you are here”. There

is also a quote from local poet, Peter Redgrove that “at one

time or another all the world’s water will flow through Carrick

Roads”.

Text on the seat asks

“where is Morgawr now?”

Text on the seat reads “Waves are everywhere, but with water

you can see them...”.

What happens next?Following [x date] votes will be counted and the resplease feel free to contact: Mor on [email protected] or Richard Wilcox, BID Manager on [email protected]

1. Sticky dot votes for Fal Estuary: -

What makes Falmouth unique is the relationship of the deep water harbour and

estuary. Inspired by the shape of the estuary and its organic qualities, a simplified

version is drawn into the back of the seat.

In the workshops at Falmouth School, the myth of Morgawr came up. Morgawr is a

prehistoric-looking creature who is said to live in the Falmouth Bay. This seat design

suggests Morgawr, and the link to the sea, through the spiral shape of the shell which

forms the seat.

Waves are the theme of this seat design. They seem to fascinate people. We watch

them, listen to them, work and play with them. Ocean waves reveal what is normally

hidden from view - you can see the energy. Falmouth may not be the ‘surfing capital’

of Cornwall, but children, adults, residents and visitors alike all appreciate waves.
