OUR NEWEST MEMBERS

Two new people joined the Club effective October. If you see them around the Club please introduce yourselves and make them feel welcome.

Ed and Peg met over 2 years ago at a Singles Walk and Dine Social.

Ed is a retired Ford Automotive Engineer. In addition to cars being a big part of his life, Ed has enjoyed water activities for many years. He has lived on the water for almost 40 years in various locations in Michigan and Florida with his late wife Pat. Boating has been and continues to be an integral part of his life. He has recently been introduced to kayaking by Peg.

Peg, who is originally from upstate New York, is a retired Innkeeper/Restaurateur. Peg, along with her late husband Gerhard, built and oper-ated a hotel/restaurant in Killington, Vermont for 23 years. They sold the property in 2007 and moved to Florida. Peg has owned and enjoyed both powerboats and sailboats over the years.

Both Ed and Peg are excited about becoming members of the Punta Gorda Boat Club.

Cora Sue Barnett hails from New Jersey, originally, and grew up in Miami, Florida. She has always loved the sea and the beach, going back as far as when her mother, who also loved the beach, would take her as a young child to the nearby New Jersey Shore for the day and keep her baby food warm by keeping the jars in the sand. Cora has lived in Florida, Michigan, New York, Alabama, Tennessee, Mexico and Chile.

She moved to Charlotte County in 1994 and opened Crossway Counsel-ing & Learning Center, where as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor she provides counseling services to individuals and married couples.

Cora and Past Commodore Bill Barnett first met in August of 2012, and thus began their love story which culminated in their marriage on March 7, 2013.

Cora looks forward to getting to know everyone through the many boating activities at the PGBC as she and Bill move forward in their wonderful new life together in this most beautiful place.

Cruise Highlights

Legacy Harbour

Overnight Cruise: October 1 - 4

Four power boats made their way to the Legacy Harbour Marina in Fort Myers with smooth seas and beautiful weather. They were C-Jem (Chaffman), Fancy Free III (Martin) Happy People (McGuire), and Irish Wake (Bick).

With the exception of one evening, the weather couldn’t have been better for the three night stay at one of the nicest and most conveniently located marinas in our area.

Although three scheduled boats did not make the trip due to mechanical or other reasons, two crews (Adamaitises and Bridges) came to the marina via land yacht for socializing and heavy hors d’oeuvres on Tuesday evening. The same two crews with an additional couple (Hokensons) returned the next evening for an enjoyable dinner at Joe’s Crab Shack. On the third evening plans to walk into Fort Myers for dinner at the French Connection restaurant (highly recommended by the McGuires) were dashed due to heavy rains in the area. Due to the poor weather, the Chaffmans, Bicks, Matins, and McGuires decided for another good meal at Joe’s Crab Shack instead.

Daytimes were spent in the marina pool, playing Mah Jongg, or simply relaxing on the boats or under the chickee hut. Several people enjoyed the Farmer’s Market conveniently located under the 41 bridge within a block of the marina. Some crews took advantage of the free pump outs at their slip.

On Friday morning, after coffee and pastries, the four boat crews headed home under slightly overcast skies. All in all this was an excellent cruise with great participants.

Cruise leaders Ed and Beth look forward to another cruise to Legacy Harbour Marina in 2014.

Autumn Extravaganza, possibly the best cruising event of the year, is just around the corner. So mark your calendars and get ready to have a ton of fun.

This event is for everyone. You can come when you are able and stay as long as you are able. You can come with your boat for the entire cruise, the weekend, a day or just an after-noon if that fits you schedule better. You may even come by one of two ferry services if you prefer. The important thing is that you came and enjoy the fun.

The theme for this year's Extravaganza will be "Thanksgiving Extravaganza 2013". It is being held later than usual to give the snowbirds time to return and participate in all the festivities … November 14-17. As in the past it will be held in Pelican Bay and Cayo Costa State Park, a jewel of the Gulf coast, lying west of North Ft. Myers.

The main event of the weekend will be the picnic at noon on Saturday, November 16th featuring sliced turkey with all the usual trimmings.

Preceding the picnic will be games on or around Punta Blanca Island. The theme for the games is "Have yourself a Dinghy Little Thanksgiving" and will include dinghy races, a dinghy pull, a dinghy poker run, and a game of dinghy VHF bingo. Boardwalk will be replaced by the Turkey Trot and the potato canon event will be a Turkey Shoot. The winning kite target for the turkey shoot will be decorated like a turkey.

There are no roads that take you to Cayo Costa. You must get there by boat, kayak, raft, on a King Fisher cruise, Tropic Star ferry service or long distance swim. No matter how you plan on getting there all members are encouraged to come out and join in the fun on Saturday, November 16th.

Don't miss this event or you will feel like a turkey.

King Fisher Fleet

The King Fisher fleet has a full day cruise on Charlotte Harbor with a 3 hour stopover at Cayo Costa every Saturday. This makes it possible for members without boats to participate in the main event and picnic from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. The cost is $27.95 plus the $2 park fee. The boat leaves the dock at Fisherman’s Village at 9:00 am and returns at 4:30 pm. For more information and reservations contact King Fisher Fleet at kingfisherfleet.com or 941-639-0969.

Tropic Star Ferry

In December, plan on joining other club members when they head north to Cape Haze and set their anchor across from the town of Cape Haze near Don Pedro State Park.

Once anchored it is a short dinghy ride to the docks at Don Pedro and then an even shorter walk to the one mile of pristine and isolated beach. Swimming, sunbathing (temperature permitting), beachcombing for shells and sharks teeth, and watching the sunset will be on the agenda. Bring beach chairs, umbrella, your conch horn and plan on sitting back, relaxing and enjoying time with fellow club members.

Access is by boat only. There is a park fee of $2.00 per day. Other options of how you might enjoy your time while there will be discussed at the Skippers’ meeting on Mon-day December 2nd.

Mickey and Lynne Bumpass have put together the details for this trip but will be unable to be lead the trip due to unexpected health issues. Therefore a skipper is needed to pick up where they left off and lead the trip. If interested please contact John Byrne, your Fleet Captain of sail, at 941-621-2567.

Find the crab pot style markers with the Club burgee flying on top.

The poker run planned for December 11th will start from Peace River Marker “2” at 0830 hours for sailboats, trawlers, etc. and at 0900 hours for faster powerboats. The same course will be run by both groups.

To start the run, participants will pick up envelopes from the committee boat at Peace River Marker “2”. The course will start differently by boat, so following another boat will not get you to where you want to be. Each envelope will contain three things: First, a compass course to follow to the first and then each subsequent mark; Second, a harbor chart which shows all mark locations; Third, the GPS coordinates for each mark. Consider the second and third envelopes your “lifelines”. If the skipper can follow the compass course to arrive at each mark do not open the other envelopes. Each skipper will pick up one tag from each mark they find. If you are picking the last tag on a mark please recover the mark and bring it to the Fisherman’s Village to be returned to the organizers. You may want to bring an old towel with you to place the markers on when picked-up.

There are 7 markers; therefore you will get 7 cards if you find them all. In addition, return your harbor chart envelope UN-OPENED and receive another card; return the envelope with your GPS Coordinates UNOPENED and receive yet another card.

The run will last two hours. Participants are expected up-stairs at the Captain’s Table Restaurant by 1130 hours. There skippers will find two decks of playing cards face down on a table. The skippers will then exchange the tags they have collected and UNOPENED envelopes for a correspond-ing number of cards. The skippers should then make his/her best poker hand from their cards. The best hands gets first choice of prizes, second best hand the second choice, etc. until all prizes are exhausted.

Lunch will follow at the Captain’s Table at each participant’s expense.

Kayak Highlights

Fisheating Creek, Palmdale

October 15

On October 15th, 37 kayakers made their way to Palmdale to paddle on Fisheating Creek. There was the largest number of renters ever on a club paddle and when the outfitter ran out of kayaks, some of our members had to rent canoes! Kudos to Marilyn and Joe Harpster and their guests for being the brave souls canoeing!

This is one of the prettiest paddles in Florida and it didn't disap-point! Consisting of a black water cypress swamp, the creek meanders for miles and miles with lots of bird life and its fair share of gators. The scenery is outstanding, making this location a "must do" for your kayaking bucket list!

Overall, it was a beautiful kayaking day!

Sunset Paddle

October 19 Friday afternoon Ed and Deb Higgins sent an email saying “Let’s Meet Up” for a sunset paddle on the Peace River Saturday. Twenty paddlers took them up on their offer and met them at the Liverpool Road boat ramp for a 6 pm launch.

They headed out to the bird rookery to see the birds (actually just one bird) come home for the evening then paddled past the historic Island 33 while the sun was starting to set.

After securing the kayaks for their trip home all shared snacks at the pavilion before heading home.

It was a beautiful paddle and a perfect ending for what was an-other beautiful day in paradise.

Upcoming Kayaking

Little Manatee River Redo

18001 U.S. 301, Wimauma, FL

Wednesday, November 6

As all of the attendees at the Tarpon Springs overnight know, we got flooded out of the first scheduled paddle at Little Mana-tee River. The rain had caused flood conditions on the river and the outfitter had to close for two weeks until the river returned to normal levels. The river has settled down and arrangements have been made with Canoe Outpost to go back up and paddle the river on Wednesday November 6th. Plan to be in the river by 10 AM. The trip takes about 3 hours including a lunch stop. The first shuttle pick up time is 1:15.

This is a great day trip. It's an hour and 10 minutes north and a very tranquil, shuttled paddle downriver. The outpost will honor the previously negotiated group rate for the shuttle of $10.00 for non-renters and if you rent, the shuttle price is included. The rental rates are just $26.00 for a single and $34.00 for a tan-dem.

At normal water levels this is a very easy paddle and novices will be very comfortable on this paddle.

An email will be going out with detailed information and direc-tions to the Canoe Outpost. Sign up on the club website so we can give the outfitter an accurate headcount!

Full Moon Paddle

Sunday, November 17

Set aside the evening of November 17th for the club's first "Full Moon Paddle". Plan on launching from the Placida boat ramp prior to sunset, paddling out to Dog Island (a small uninhabited island, just off the Placida swing bridge) where we will watch the sunset, light a campfire, share some appetizers and "moonshine", do a little "moon dance" and paddle back to the boat ramp after dark.

A detailed email with everything you need to know about moonlight paddling will be sent out early in November. In the meantime, sign up online on the club website.

Venice Myakka River Park

Tuesday, November 19

On Tuesday November 19th, the club paddle will take place at Venice Myakka River Park located in Nokomis. This is a sec-tion of the Myakka River located south of the state park. It's a lovely paddle and not as "gator infested" as the upper sections of the river.

This is a "first time" location for a club paddle, although Ed and Deb Higgins have paddled there several times. Unfortunately there are no rentals at this location. The outfitter normally used for rentals has sold the business and currently there isn’t any-one that will service the park.

Sign up online or contact the Higgins so they won't leave the launch without you!

An email will be sent out closer to the paddle date with more details and driving directions.

Boa Making October 10

On October 10th Patti Linn taught eighteen ladies how to knit a colorful frilly boa scarf. All materials were provided and after picking out their yarn and one easy lesson from Patti all were well on their way to knitting a beautiful boa.

At noon the ladies stopped for a lunch break and Patti gave a demonstration of different ways to tie a scarf to accessorize an outfit. They were then treated to homemade brownies and pumpkin bars compliments of Patti.

Thanks Patti for a most interesting class.

Blessing of the Fleet October 12, 11:00 am

2013/2014 Boating Season Officially Begins

The Blessing of the Fleet event was held on October 12th, with ten vessels and 90 members and guests participating. The weather was wonderfully cool and clear for the outdoor activi-ties.

After a half hour social that included traditional Bloody Marys, mimosas, and punch, the members convened at the flagpole. The start of the 2013/2014 boating season was declared open by Commodore Phyllis Adamaitis as part of the flag raising ceremony, after which members sang the first verses of the Star Spangled Banner and America the Beautiful.

The audience then proceeded with the bagpiper to the harbor side of the Club to remember the six friends that were lost in the past year. Chaplain Marie Ludvig said a prayer, flowers were laid in the harbor to honor them and the piper played Amazing Grace. The chaplain then invoked God's blessing on the fleet and the members for the year ahead.

A lunch of sandwiches, fruit, pasta salad, chips and cookies was served by committee. After lunch the members who came by boat returned to their vessels for the naval tradition of pass-in-review.

Once again, Dennis & Jeanne Lunsford acted as shuttle and commodore’s barge aboard their pontoon boat, “TAJ”.

Other members arriving by boat were: Bill & Cora Barnett aboard their Tollycraft “Shell Seeker” Tom & Barbara Connors aboard their Bayliner “Mega-Daze” Joe & Sheila Cox aboard their sloop “Avion” Bob & Paula Hickey aboard their Sea Ray “Downsized” John & Jan Gildersleeve aboard their sloop “Trimmer” Larry & Pat Graber aboard their trawler “Twilight Time” Larry and Patti Linn aboard their sail boat “Magic Time III” Ron & Sharon McGuire aboard their trawler “Happy People” Jerry Ruda aboard his sailboat “Beach Baby”

At the October Business Meeting the Hickeys received a prize for the best decorated boat of the day.

Thanks to all who participated and especially those who came by sea.

Help Celebrate the Holidays with the Clubs first “on the water” Christmas Party.

What could be more exciting than fifty Captains and fifty First Mates all on the same boat!

This December 7th plan on attending the clubs first ever “on the water” Christmas Party. Arrangements have been made with the King Fisher Fleet to combine the Sunset and Christmas Light Canal cruises for the price of one. Setting sail from Fisherman’s Village at 5:30 for a 1½ hour tour aboard the Good Times Too a course will be set for the perfect spot to witness one of Florida’s glorious sunsets over beautiful Charlotte Harbor.

Sit back, relax and partake in yet another perfect evening on Charlotte Harbor. While you enjoy the ride viewing the sunset, you can also enjoy a prepared light dinner fare and your favorite spirits (BYOB). But wait, there's more! The ship's Captain will then set course for the Isles for you to view the Christmas lights, displays and decorations on homes, boats, seawalls and docks along the banks of canals. All adventures must come to an end. But, oh the stories to be told by so many Captains and First Mates as you head back to port.

Food will consist of: Cold Chicken Medallions with Mustard Sauce

Cold Poached Salmon with Dill Caper Sauce

Slivered Flank Steak with Pimento on Crusty Baguette

Pasta Salads

Christmas Cookies

Note: For this event the Club will be not provide any beverages, but ice will be provided.

The cost for this party cruise and light dinner fare is just $17 per person.

Pat and Rich Jacoby are chairing this event. Their able crew is Linda and Joe Giulivo, and Shirley and Howie Spielman.

Unfortunately this event sold out early. To be put on a wait

list call Pat and Rich Jacoby at 941-979-8108.

Important information for the day of event: Boat departs at 5:30 PM. Don’t be late!

Boarding starts at 5:15 PM.

Plan accordingly for parking at Fisherman's Village as week-

ends can be very busy. There is an additional parking area that shuttles people by golf cart. However there is no set pick up times. It is suggested that you consider car pooling as an alternative. You can use PGBC parking area to park for car pooling.

An accurate headcount must be provided to the King Fisher

Fleet boat Captain. It is imperative that you call Rich Jacoby's cell 941-258-2698 if you have a last minute emer-gency and can't make it.

Don't forget - no beverages of any kind will be supplied by

PGBC for this activity, only ice.

Donations for Local Food Bank

One of the community activities that the Club members decided to participate in several years ago was to contribute food items to those in need. Unfortunately it somehow fell by the wayside. The Board is committed to bringing it back to life.

Whenever you enter the Club and especially at the Business Meetings you are asked to bring in a unexpired canned good or a non perishable food item. There will be a basket by the check in window for you to drop in your contribution. Someone in the club will see that it gets delivered to a food bank.
