Introduction

Replacing our traditional Cat.16 fullface flange, Vinidex are pleased tooffer their injection moulded PVC StubFlange incorporating the Vinidex PVCBacking Ring.

Flanged joints in pipelines are used tocreate a demountable joint for futuredisassembly to connect valves andvessels, where strength in tensions isrequired or to join to other materials.The Vinidex Stub Flanges and PVCBacking Rings enable easy access tojoins for future maintenance.

This unique, lightweight and corrosionresistant system, offers faster andeasier connections as the Vinidex PVCBacking Rings are supplied withmoulded bolt holes compatible withboth Table D and Table E inaccordance with AS 2129.

Design

The Vinidex PVC Stub Flanges andBacking Rings are designed inaccordance with Australian Standards,and as such the relevant sections ofthe Vinidex Water Supply TechnicalManual for PVC Pressure Pipe Systemsapply.

To ensure a long service life, theVinidex PVC Stub Flanges and BackingRings should be installed in accordancewith AS/NZS2566.1:1998.Installation

This section should be read inconjunction with Australian StandardsAS2032 - Installation of UPVCSystems.Installers should also be familiar withthe “Vinidex Water Supply Manual forPVC Pressure Pipe Systems, TechnicalManual”.

AssemblyPreparation prior to assembly will be akey function to a successfulinstallation. Prior to installation anumber of checks need to be carriedout:

1. Ensure the sealing faces of both theStub Flange and the mating surfaceare flat, clean and with no evidenceof burrs or notches.

2. When jointing flange to ring, checkthe size and number of the nuts andbolts are in accordance withAS2129, Table D or Table E.3. When determining the bolt lengthconsideration should be given to thethickness of the PVC Backing Ring.Thicknesses of PVC Backing Ringsare shown in Table 2 below.

4. Check that the nuts and bolts easilyscrew together and have sufficientthread to enable the sealing surfacesto meet and to be tensioned.

5. Place Backing Ring on the pipe inreadiness for jointing, ensuring theribbed side of the Backing Ring isfacing the Stub Flange.

6. Having cut the pipe to the correctlength, prepare the pipe end andthe socket of the Stub Flange forsolvent cementing to each other.The preparation and the solventcement joint are to be executed inaccordance with AS2032.

With the Flange Plate held captive onthe pipe, the following steps aremandatory.

1. Washers to be placed under theheads of all bolts and nuts to spreadthe force and prevent damage tothe Backing Ring.

2. Tighten bolts gradually by pullingdown the nuts diametricallyopposite each other using a torquewrench to ensure even loadingaround the bolt heads and nuts, Figure 1.

3. Tighten each bolt several timesrepeating the process pattern.4. The final recommended torquevalue for Stub Flange bolts areshown in Table 2.

PVC Stub Flanges & Backing Ring

Alignment

Alignment of the Stub Flange to the mating flange should be installed with the normal installation tolerance in accordance with Australian Standards AS2032.

The Stub Flange joint should be completed and allowed to cure prior to torquing the flange bolts. Premature torquing of the bolts will cause move-ment of the joint and weaken the joint itself.

Pressure Testing

Upon completion, the system should be pressure tested in accordance withAustralian Standard AS2032.As the Stub Flange is solvent cemented to the pipe the system should not bepressure tested until at least 24 hours after the last joint has been made.
