17 staff from St Luke’s Hospital (slh) were lauded for their remarkable commitment at the Singapore Health Quality Service Award (shqsa). They were recognised in three award categories: Silver, Gold and Star. The award is Singapore’s first dedicated platform to recognise healthcare professionals from public healthcare institutions, community hospitals, agencies from the Intermediate and Long-Term Care (iltc) sector and private healthcare institutions.

Assoc Prof Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim conferred a total of 14 Silver, two Gold, and one Star awards to our champions. These champions displayed commitment, administered quality care and provided excellent service to patients, making a vast difference to their patients. Ms Sng Bee Li, one of the award winners shared, “I feel very honoured and encouraged to receive this award. I feel that this is an affirmation of my efforts in helping my patients and their families. It spurs me on to continue to excel in this field of work.”

St Luke’s would like to congratulate our champions and encourage them to continue making a difference to every patient. We look forward to their contribution as we continue working towards our vision of transforming community care.

The 9th Edition will be held from 10 to 11 April with the theme 'Algorithm Vs Jigsaw Puzzle Approach’. Keynote speaker Prof Keryln Carville and a host of international speakers will be on hand to share their expertise while pre-conference workshops are available from 8 to 9 April to keep you updated on the latest techniques in wound care.

Wound Conference 2015

As part of the “Game for Mental Fitness” project between The Foundation of Rotary Clubs (Singapore) Ltd and u3a Singapore, clients at St Luke’s ElderCare Whampoa Centre became amongst the first in Singapore to play Rummikub, a tile-based game for two to four players. In this activity, each participant needs to form a set of at least three tiles in numerical running order or, in groups of same-value tiles in distinct colours.

Clients attempting the game for the first time were more than delighted to learn the rules of the game and quickly became adept at matching the tiles.

With his youthful appearance and quiet confidence, the Indonesian-born Japanese would seem more at home in a creative agency than in an eldercare centre.

Winsy was raised in a family of medical professionals. His father is a surgeon while his Japanese mother is a midwife. His two siblings are also in the healthcare industry. As for Winsy, he is trained as a nurse. He moved to Osaka when he was three years old after his father relocated for work. During his formative years, he would learn about the healthcare industry as he listened to the work conversations between his parents. That gave him an insight into the healthcare industry and it began to intrigue him.

His nursing journey only started in earnest when his grandfather passed away. “As I was growing up, I saw how my family faced challenges when we took care of grandfather who had dementia. It was a difficult period for the family. When my grandfather passed away, I wanted to take care of people like him and decided to become a nurse,” said Winsy.

Winsy’s decision to become a nurse surprised many, including his family. But he persevered and did his degree in nursing in Indonesia. Following his graduation, he returned to Japan to work for another 8 years and worked his way

up to become a nurse manager. But he was only getting started. Remembering how he wanted to help the elderly, he took his master’s degree in geriatrics. When a former professor mentioned that if he ever decided to venture outside of Japan, he should look for an organisation in Singapore called St Luke’s ElderCare, whose work was aligned with what Winsy wished to do.

Recounting how he felt when he first joined, Winsy shares the cultural differences between the elderly in Japan and Singapore. “The work culture in Japan is a little bit more reserved when nurses work with the elderly. The nurses would step in and help only when the elderly requested for help. But in Singapore, I am able to step in and help when I feel it’s necessary,” said Winsy.

Adjusting to life in Singapore has been easy. His colleagues have been helping him settle into the daily work at the centre. He has also connected with the elderly, as two of the clients are able to converse with him in Japanese. One of the clients has grown so fond of Winsy, that he took on his advice to quit smoking, much to the delight of his son.

If you’re a first-time visitor to St Luke’s ElderCare Bukit Timah Centre, don’t be surprised if you chance upon conversations in fluent Japanese, between the clients who have lived through the Second World War and its assistant centre manager, Winsy Togelang.

Some 200 staff and volunteers took part in this year’s Town Hall event, held to get insights of the year ahead from the CEO and to celebrate the Chinese Lunar New Year. With the eldercare centres located at various parts of Singapore, the event was the perfect opportunity for everyone to meet, network and bond. There were familiar faces in the crowd as they mingled with new colleagues, eagerly anticipating the activities ahead.

The day kicked off with t he popular laser tag activity as teams from the centres faced off against each other in a room filled with obstacles. Laughter and screams from the session filled the rooms throughout the Saturday morning as the teams enjoyed the competition and each other’s company. Volunteers were also on hand to demonstrate various interesting origami techniques for those who

waited for their colleagues to battle it out.

Once everyone had settled down after the activities, Mr Lim Hock Chuan, ceo of St Luke’s ElderCare, gave the audience an update of the organisation and the plans ahead for the year. He also shared the renovation plans for the centres that were taking place in 2015 as we transform community care.

The highlight of the event was the ‘lo hei’ session that marked the end of the fun filled day. St Luke’s would like to thank everyone, for being a part of the team-bonding event! As a staff highlighted: “The laser tag activity indeed involved team bonding, competition amongst staff, and buckets of laughter!”

In celebration of the Chinese Lunar New Year, staff from Dignity Kitchen had put in place a programme that catered to approximately 80 of St Luke’s clients.

Taking place at Dignity Kitchen located at Serangoon Avenue 3, clients who came from various centres across Singapore were actively engaged, thanks to a well-planned itinerary.

Activities included karaoke sessions, catered lunch and lo-hei - yu sheng. Clients not only took the lead to belt out Mandarin songs, they also inspired the rest of the elderly to sing along in tandem.

St Luke’s sincerely appreciates the magnanimity and arrangements made by Dignity Kitchen in caring for our clients. Wishing everyone a blessed Chinese New Year.

The stroke caused Mr Wong to lose functionality of his right upper and lower limb and he was unable to move his right hand, stand and walk. Being a person who was always independent and active, he became depressed as he had to be dependent on others to do the simplest task.

Mr Wong was transferred to St Luke’s Hospital where our physiotherapist (pt) and occupational therapist (ot) helped him with his recovery. Besides providing his caregivers with emotional support, our ot, Ms Sophia Chan also gave recommendations to make his home more elderly friendly. The hospital’s medical social worker also took the burden off the family’s finances by applying for a hospital bed, wheelchair and other medical equipment to be installed at home. “I am very grateful to the staff at St Luke’s for the support. I would not have known where to start to find financial assistance for my father,” said Ms Christine Wong.

Armed with his persistent fighting spirit and the encouragement from St Luke’s staff, Mr Wong now

visits the day rehabilitation centre twice a week for occupational and physiotherapy. As a testament to his desire to recover, he attends every session with zest and a smile and would sometimes request for more! He continues his exercises diligently at home as his goal is to quickly walk again with minimal assistance.

“Never give up hope! My father’s unwavering spirit even at the age of 90 has been very uplifting to all in the family,” said Ms Wong. Mr Wong Ten Shing is now able to stand up longer and do more things independently. Mr Wong is one of the many such patients we help in St Luke’s Hospital. Because of your generous financial support, many more patients and clients like Mr Wong will be better able to focus on their recovery.

How do you envision your life at 90 years old? Will you be enjoying the company of your loved ones and indulging in leisure pursuits? Mr Wong Ten Shing was doing so and looking forward to celebrate his birthday in a few months’ time. Unfortunately, life dealt him a bad hand when he suffered a stroke in Mar 2014.
