Learning Goals
• Understand sport psychology concepts and techniques
• Discuss strategies to integrate sport psychology into learning experiences
• Create and share new ideas for implementation of Unit 2, Topic 1
Today’s session is designed to utilise the expertise in the room through facilitated discussion
Success Criteria
You will know you are successful if you can:
• Use the syllabus subject matter to develop learning experiences
• Recognise and explain select psychological concepts and principles
• Identify ways to gather purposeful primary data through integration of psychological concepts and techniques in a movement activity
• Use the inquiry process to enhance teaching and learning of sport psychology

ENGAGE AND UNDERSTAND
Unit 2, Topic 1 Description, stage 1:
Recognise and explain the concepts and principles about sport psychology through purposeful and authentic learning in and about a selected physical activity
• Psychological Concept: Motivation
• Mental Rehearsal Techniques
• Psychological Technique: Mindfulness and meditation
• Gathering primary data on the influence of psychological techniques
2010 Physical Education: Psychology
• Focus Area A: Learning physical skills – How are skills learned, implemented, maintained and enhanced?
• “For students to be intelligent performers, they must be able to do more than just reproduce physical responses. They need to know and understand how physical responses can be improved… Students need to be able to apply… psychological strategies… to maximise their own and their team’s performance potential.” (page 11)
2010 Psychology Subject MatterPsychology How can an understanding of psychology theory influence participation,
learning of and performance in physical activities?
• Motivation, arousal and performance
• Information processing team dynamics
• Investigate how the arousal levels of different performers affect skill learning
• Select strategies to improve team dynamics and enhance performance• Conduct an intervention strategy and then examine the effect of the
intervention on the playing performance of others (perform pre- and post-intervention tests)
• Investigate the potential outcomes of various psychology/coaching approaches on performance
Extension subject matter• Goal setting • Communication • Anxiety • Imagery and visualisation

• Teaching and learning
• Sports Psychology subject matter
• Physical activities
PSYCHOLOGICAL CONCEPT - MOTIVATION
• recognise and explain the concept of motivation as a continuum, from extrinsic to intrinsic
• identify and explore the impact of motivation, confidence, arousal, attention, concentration and team dynamics on personal performance in the selected physical activity
QCAA, 2018
Motivation Continuum
What is behind Tomic's feeble effort and "don't care attitude"? In my professional view it is the byproduct of a motivational mindset that is insufficient to deal with the pressures of professional tennis over the long term. Many young players aspire to success and the rewards that accompany that success. But my experience is that motivation based on gaining external rewards, while initially successful, is not sustainable over time.
None of us have total control over winning and the attainment of external rewards. This lack of control (losing) ultimately leads to low self-confidence and self-belief, fluctuations in mood states, and a motivational and emotional roller coaster. Inevitably we see what we saw in Tomic's Wimbledon performance. It is similar for those of us choosing a job solely for the money. It might be OK for a while, but we soon find it impossible to enjoy the job, lose motivation and end up looking for something else to do.
Tennis should be child’s play for Bernard Tomic

ENGAGE AND UNDERSTAND
• Investigate information about psychological techniques that can be used to optimise performance
- mental rehearsal techniques — mental rehearsal of the entire performance, visualisation of one aspect of skill execution prior to performance, and internal and external perspectives of imagery
• Investigate the use of psychological techniques on personal performance in authentic performance environments
• Gather primary data about the influence of psychological techniques on personal performance of specialised movement sequences and movement strategies in authentic performance environments
• Use secondary data to analyse how the sport psychology concepts and principles can influence performance in the selected physical activity.
APPLY & ANALYSE
• Analyse and synthesise primary data and secondary data about the influence of sport psychology concepts and principles on specialised movement sequences and movement strategies in the selected physical activity
• Optimise performance in the selected physical activity by devising personal and team sport psychology strategies that consider the
- effect of the psychological techniques on personal and team motivation, confidence, arousal, attention, concentration and/or team dynamics
- factors affecting the implementation of the techniques

EVALUATE AND JUSTIFY• Reflect on primary data and secondary data to evaluate the effectiveness of
sport psychology and movement strategies to achieve a determined outcome including
- meeting the requirements of personal and team performance in the selected physical activity - using suitable sport psychology techniques to optimise personal and team motivation, confidence, arousal, attention, concentration and/or team dynamics - optimising the performance of specialised movement sequences and movement strategies
• Justify the development of sport psychology and movement strategies usingevidence from primary data and secondary data
• Make decisions about and use language, conventions and mode-appropriate features to convey meaning for particular purposes and contexts.

Mindfulness and Meditation
• Terms are often used interchangeably
• Growth area in Sport Psychology and Performance Psychology
• Psychological Technique linked to self-confidence, pre-performance, relaxation, and attention & concentration techniques
MeditationDr Kristin Keim, a clinical sport psychologist, states that athletes can experience great benefits from practising meditation, which is used by many elite athletes to optimise their performance.
Meditation has been shown to:
• reduce stress
• improve sleep patterns and recovery times
• enhance endurance
• improve self-identity.
This results in:
• higher self-confidence and enhanced performance.
• Increased awareness of and connection to body
Mindfulness is a mental technique with connections
to meditation – it’s certainly easier to perform
when meditating.
Mindfulness is the process of paying attention only to
what is happening right now, rather than thinking
ahead, looking back or being distracted by other
concerns.
Lianne Tomfohr, assistant Professor of Psychology at the University of Calgary, is a mindfulness expert who has seen interest in the field "explode" in recent years. She said research has shown that basketball players who practice meditation are more likely to make successful free throws, and that a benefit of yoga and mindfulness is that individuals can cope with uncomfortable situations better, for longer. In fact, a key mind tool, visualisation, can elicit the same emotions as if the action was really being made. Visualise yourself kicking a ball perfectly, and not only are the same areas of the brain activated as they would be by the physical action, but the trick can have real effects on technique.
